I designed this system when I worked @ Sun (along with 2 other guys) back in the 85+ timeframe. It was Sun's first implementation of the Sun3 architecture based around the 68020 and avb's MMU utilizing the platform (2/160) already in existence (this was a follow on from the 2/120 which was Multibus based). Glad to see there are still a few out there.

I've got one too in my Sun3 collection, along with a 3/50, 3/60 , 3/80 and 3/110. It made a big pop a few years back but I haven't had a chance to investigate yet. The VME bus is a pain to troubleshoot though since you cant easily access and probe the energized boards.

I love old computers full of hundreds of small DIP packages, all socketed of course because it's not like today where you break 3 laws and 2 warranties trying to fix something on a piece of hardware you bought.

I learned to program in C on one of those (though some might debate that assertion !) using the incredibly fancy IDE of vi and the Sun compiler.

16:20 I remember from the 90's that you had to pick the right jumpers for some devices, and that you can't have 2 devices sharing the same ID. Check the jumpers on that drive. Also, a terminator has to go at the end of the chain.

If you found this video interesting, and you want to learn more about Sun workstations and servers (especially their giant flagship server from the late 90s/early 2000s called the Sun Enterprise 10000) then you absolutely MUST check out a channel here on RUclips called 'jpkiwigeek'. Absolutely fascinating! I've been subscribed to him for gosh, years and years now. I've watched and re-watched every single one of his videos and have absorbed so much info by osmosis.

The network card uses a sifferent bus, I think Multibus,. The glue logic adapts it to VME. I also think that the adaptec(?) card was some kind of ST506 controller, obviously for the SCSI bus. VME is an industrial standard. Btw, the 3 denotes the architecture, 32-bit 68020/030, the 1 for 100 is the specific cpu board, and 60 is the case type. Unless I’m too old to remember. :)

I remember 20+ years ago, electronic equipment power supplies were blown into fault after dust cleaning was done. There was so much dust than the removal of dust cool the power supplies and the capacitors/transformers blew after several hours/days. As One technician used to joke, "if no longer working after dusting, then replace the dust".
