    Many things Mercedes did first and one of them being the first gas car ever made. Along with that, ABS system, fuel injection, cruise control, stick shift, airbags, hybrid cars, turbochargers on cars, diesel engines in cars, catalytic converters, superchargers, traction control, and many other things that I cant think of. They are the pioneers in luxury and everyone else just imitates.

    We've had Mercedes-Benz cars in my family for three generations, my dad has had three generations of S-Class but what I am referring to is to the new S-Class. Bear in mind this outstanding vehicle not only replaces the outgoing W221 but the Maybach models as well. I have pre-ordered the new S63 AMG and could sit in a S350 CDI with exclusive package and the quality of materials and finish is totally on par with that of a Bentley FS or a RR Ghost.

  • @Nightbird.
    @Nightbird. 11 лет назад +1

    Exactly! The W126 was the LAST hand built MB S-Class. And while it isn't a perfect car (the ride could be softer over pot holes & bumps) it still can be fixed at home by someone who is good mechanically, and it was reliable all the way around. Not to mention it was beautiful & offered excellent crash protection. Just imagine if you have an electronic problem with this latest S-Class -you wouldn't even know how fast you were driving because the speedometer is an LCD & would be gone from view!

    For some reason this car keeps reminding me of the Jaguar XJ. Big Grill, Similar type of LED. Screen based Dials. Even the mood lighting follows a similar design concept (except in jag its not light based, but a metal or wood bezel going around you and the steering wheel, whereas here its a led light bezel going under the steering wheel)

    Small details that make a big difference indeed. Like the LS' plastic chrome interior door handles instead of polished steel or a simple black PVC dashboard instead of stitched leather except on the top of the range 600h lwb. I owned an euro spec LS600h swb for over a year and I've always liked the LS in general but even my local Lexus salesman admitted an S-Class was always a notch above. Good luck with your next purchase anyway :]

  • @Nightbird.
    @Nightbird. 11 лет назад

    As someone who has owned several S-Classes since the 80's, I can tell you the gentleman in this review is an expert. We S-Class buyers already know that safety will be number one. It's inherent in all S-Classes, so we don't want to hear about it..& this reviewer knows it. What do I care about? Comfort, convenience, details. If I just want safety, I'll buy a Volvo. How hard is it to find my radio station? Turn up the AC? Do I have to scroll through a long menu just for that? That's info we want.

      Rolls Royce? No way in hell. Rolls Royce is the KING OF THE HILL. That reflects in both the Rolls price and its status. Rolls Royce screams wealth. MErcedes screams...average american doing well. BIG DIFFERENCE

    • @harsimranbhatti
      @harsimranbhatti 10 лет назад +5

      Frank Assnot with old Rollers, I would agree, but the new ones aren't really worth it, ever since BMW got their hands on RR, even though BMW makes great cars, the new Rolls- Royce's are just pampered 7-Series BMW's...and let's not get carried away, every luxury car gets compared to the S-Class, hence it is the luxury standard of the world. And that interior is amazing.

    Calm down Mercedes fanboy's!!! Cooley gave this car one of the best ratings of all time on Cnet.com and he gave it an editors choice. He said 500 amazing things about the car stop focusing on the 2 things. The burmester thing was a joke and he is right it does look like a budweiser logo. Not this year's car but the PREVIOUS MODEL'S pontoon fenders weren't that attractive and they fixed that. Brian Cooley is by far the best car reviewer out there with his honesty and wit as seen in this review.

    I'll take your advice and test drive the new one when it comes in. I always seem to end up in one no matter what I dislike about them, so unless my colleagues in their Lexus LS's can convince me otherwise, I'll probably be getting this one too. Everytime a friend takes in his Lexus LS for an oil change, he gets a new loaner LS, a huge cappuccino, a huge pastry, and first class service. When I take my S-Class in for the same thing, I get to sit in a cold room..lol. Details are everything. =)

    As a Medical Doctor..I drive an S-Class..and have been driving them for over 30 years. And trust me when I tell you..an S-Class is NOT above a Bentley or Rolls Royce. One drive in a Phantom is all you need to know this. Even the Ghost makes this new S-Class look dated. But keep in mind you also pay 5x the amount of money for a RR, so it better be the best out there..and for an all around luxury experience..it really is. =)

But..in all honesty..MB electronic have been horrid after the W126. From the W140 on MB admitted they outsourced their electronics, hence the many "lemon" lawsuits against them (google MB lawsuit), and they admitted it. However, if you just want safety get a Volvo. For overall luxury, all the handmade details of a RR still win out for me. =)

    Since you seem to have more technical knowledge about MB than I do, what is your opinion on the current electronic quality of these cars? Did MB finally stop outsourcing their electronics & fix the reliability issue? That's the one glaring difference between my S-Class & my friends LS's: they just don't have all these electronic issues & hiccups. I haven't read if MB resolved this or not, since they have done their best to avoid talking about this issue, even though it's the a huge one with MB.

    Add to this its more advanced safety technology plus ride quality and dynamics, and overall it's a better car than a Phantom or a Mulsanne even if devoid of the British handmade glamour that favors these two brands. Make no mistake, we are talking about the car itself, not its status symbol.
