If you have mental health problems, anxiety or anything I would recommend doing 'year in pixels'. Basiclly, you make tabel 30x12 and decide what colors man what emotion for e.g green - happy, anxiety - red and etc and color every day one 'pixel'. At the end of year you will have cute design. Also I recommend having maybe 7-8 colors, so you could more easily explain in one word how you feel. If it's bad emotion, then write in notes what reason behind it. Then you can go after few months and se that maybe it wasn't that big of a deal. This helped me alot. I also have color for each day of the week, and at the end of my journal i have coloring page and every day i color some parts only with color of that day. Idk, i think it's cool.

To make it more unique, and my personal style, I bought some Van Gogh washi tape to decorate the pages. It looks amazing and is SO functional!

I love your DIY versions I tried gold leafing a section of a plain notebook for mine and I absolutely love the system. It's taken me a while to perfect and tailor it to me which you can definitely see from the my first bullet journal video I posted but I really love how it works and honestly find it such a lifesaver!

Instead of an awl, could you use something like a pen or a knitting needle?
Mint poloroid if your clothe is thin, then you can use a thick needle. i found one is daiso and works fine.
