Conflicting reports on Waterville Dam. After reports of its failure it has subsequently been reported that the flooding is from the opened spillway, not the dam itself. Confusing.
NWS, Duke Energy and TEMA said it’s not failed. It’s TEMAs pinned tweet right now. Doesn’t help that the Walters Dam is also known as the Waterville Dam (the name of the lake) and folk are reporting both names.

They said that about the Houston Dam during Harvey but there was nothing wrong with the Dam , Harris County kept letting water out to flood area's where it never flooded before, I pray for all of those who's endangered with your flooding, stay safe!

There is a difference between a catastrophic failure and a collapse. A failure is part of the dam not doing it's job. in 1995, one of the flood gates on the Folsom Dam in Sacramento, Ca stuck open and release more water than expected down stream, that was considered a failure, but not a breech.

Failure is not collapse...it is the mechanism that allows water released from the lake...if they can't close it because of the pressure behind the gates...water will come out in unmanageable amounts...that's how they had time to evacuate

Thousands of old dams and bridges are approaching failure due to lack of maintenance. Some states don't even do regular inspections. Texas has four inspectors for the entire state. Louisiana has none.
Dang, I live in N Calif. in 2017, the Lake Oroville Spillyway fractured which cause DWR to have water overflow to go over emergency spillway- catastrophic failure both @ spillway, emerg spillway. The dam itself held, but what a horrible mess.

I pray everyone is okay but I knew it was coming far north and it isn't done with us yet. Most of Tn in a mountainous region and below sea level. All of this rain will lead to flash flooding in low lying terrains so please stay safe and if you must please get to higher ground. We are also in danger of landslides so please be mindful is you stay in a basin. If you haven't already invested in off grid equipment, then I suggest you do so before power outage and not after cuz this hurricane season is just getting started.
