12:15 Why do they always love doing cringy unfunny stereotypical impersonations based on their imagination of how ‘gaijin’ speak Japanese? It’s not hard to just read this email as you read other emails, smh. Do they know ‘gaijin’ can speak Japanese with no stereotypical accent? For example, the RUclipsr Dogen.
I don’t think that these women have any intention of demeaning any particular person. These little plays are akin to people imitating (sometimes somewhat exaggeratedly) the way a bearded old man speaks. They can express who is speaking by lowering their voices and speaking slowly. Some may find it offensive, but for the most part, it serves to enliven the conversation and make the audience laugh. The fact is that many foreigners have such accents (which is not a bad thing, of course), and you need not feel uncomfortable about this. Mr. Dogen's Japanese is very impressive, but if you reproduce a foreigner here as Mr. Dogen does, on the contrary, it does not convey that you are imitating a foreigner, which hinders smooth communication. I am not a good English speaker, so I wrote this sentence while using deepl. I hope I have expressed what I intended.
@@chanyanachan thanks for your reply. Firstly, I watched this part many times and I didn’t see whether the email sender is a bearded old man or not. Secondly, as a “gaijin”, I’ve heard many stereotypical jokes of imitating “weird” accents, I found funny first and then it’s overused so I just found it annoying. That’s my problem that “it servers to enliven the conversation and make the audience laugh” doesn’t work on me. Thirdly, “they can express who is speaking by lowering their voices and speaking slowly”, we don’t know the gender and age of the email sender so the imitation is out of nowhere, and they didn’t read like this to other emails.
@@chanyanachan Finally, “but if you reproduce a foreigner here as Mr.Dogen does, on the contrary, it does not convey that you are imitating a foreigner, which hinders the smooth communication”. This is illogical to me. What do you mean “reproduce”? You are saying people with no stereotypical accent like a product or something. And then, why do you have to imitate a “gaijin” and convey the meaning of you imitating a “gaijin”? It’s the mono-ethnic country’s mindset that you have to differentiate “we” and “other”. If you did this in an immigrant country, you will get a lot of troubles. For me, treat gaijins not like “others” but just same human beings can smooth the conversation.
@@chanyanachan I know a half Japanese youtuber called Joey Bizinger said many times that what made him sometimes sad is he had Japanese blood and family and passport and can speak native speaker level fluent Japanese with no stereotypical accent, but because of how he looks, Japanese people don’t see him as Japanese.
I sent the email and I don't mind that they joked about it (gaijin speak or anything else), I actually aimed for it. Maybe this type of pseudo-gaijin speak can get annoying if you try to be taken seriously, but that was not the case for me here. I may or may not be an old man or have a beard.
