Degenerative Disc Disease is a common diagnosis, especially after getting an MRI or X-Ray done. Patients are often confused when receiving this diagnosis and do not know what it means.
Disc disease is not something you catch or acquire, such as heart disease. The best way to understand is by looking at the structure of the spine. In between each vertebra, there are discs that facilitate movement, allowing the spine to be stable and flexible at the same time. These discs also allow the spine to be straight and maintain its natural curves and prevent the spine from degenerating as they maintain a normal alignment.
Discs are made up of water and collagen. They have a tough outer layer, a nucleus in the center, and a soft gel-like exterior between them. So, when a patient has disc disease, there is a degeneration of normal disc properties that has happened over time. This happens when the spine shifts out of alignment and an abnormal weight is applied to a single disc.
    The most common symptoms are:
    Back pain
    Neck pain
    Generalized pain
Disc desiccation also occurs, which is a loss of fluids in the disc that also causes discs to lose height. This creates a neurological change as nerves exit each vertebra. As it thins out, the disc loses mobility, and this is connected to the position in which the spine is in.
When a patient has degenerative disc disease, we know it has been happening for a while since this degeneration takes time, and patients don't immediately feel pain. Pain comes after disc disease has been developing for some time.
The cause of degenerative disc disease could be an injury, spinal conditions such as osteoporosis, bad lifestyle choices, bad ergonomics, or overall not caring for or maintaining the spine in appropriate conditions, can cause the spine to lose its normal alignment.
To treat degenerative disc disease, you must address the underlying cause, which often is a matter of structural alignment of the spine. Lax ligaments can also cause degenerative disc disease by allowing too much motion of discs in the lax area, having the same results as a misaligned spine.
Chiropractic care, specific exercises, rehabilitation, traction, and other things that help realign the spine are the best way to treat degenerative disc disease because these address the root cause.
Treating only the pain or symptoms will improve what you feel, but it will not help address the cause of the problem, and the spine will continue to deteriorate.
We recommend supporting spinal function by making positive lifestyle choices, and watching the ergonomics when you are sitting, working, or standing. And if you've had any injuries in the past, be proactive and examine yourself in case you might be developing degenerative disc disease and do not know it yet. Expecting until pain tells you something is wrong is not the best way to go.
At Scoliosis Reduction Center, you can find proactive treatment options to prevent this sort of spinal degeneration from occurring, and if you already have disc degeneration in progress, we can help restore some of the lost spinal alignment to stop degeneration from continuing over time.

Do you often hear of people having leg pain and/or numbness with DDD? I was diagnosed with this 10 years ago and felt it more in my legs than back. Thanks!

Hi, doc. Can you please answer me? I'm 61-year-old female. I've had to disreplace in my neck so far. So good. Now I have severe scolios is in the thoracy thirty eight degree ben And I need a multi-level disk. Plum deck to me in my lumbar plus two knee replacements.I eat up with osteoarthritis Spandeliciotis.
Narrowing up the spine, I just want to be left alone. And grow up gracefully with some pain medication. Never done drugs in my life. And it's hard to find adequate relief. What would you recommend? I cannot have injections on my spokennoise back arena. The park because I have a fungi. That lies dormant And my dermatologist won't sign off on any injections. What would you recommend

The only thing is, you can replace the worn out tire, while a disc you can’t. 😔

Hi sir, my mother had MRI scan. And the report says "L4-5: Disc degeneration and right paracentral protrusion with annual tear causing thecal sac compression and bilateral recess compromise compressing traverse nerve roots (Rt>Lt).
L5-S1: Disc degeneration with right paracentral protrusion causing thecal sac compression and right lateral recess compromise compressing traverse nerve roots."
Can you explain it and suggest required treatment. Also about exercises for treatment.
