I think Magtech's ammo is hit and miss on performance . It really depends on caliber. I have Never seen Magtech 380 ACP do well. Its just not loaded hot enough imho. 900 FPS is Never good for hollowpoint expansion except in certain calibers that are known to go slow like 45ACP etc. Their 38 Spl seemed to do OK tho. Pretty much what I have always noticed. Nice test/comparison Gun Sam. I recently got a 4.25"barreled 380 and I doubt even that would help this anemic 380 Magtech ammo. Nice shooting as always GS!

Doing good deeds for Good People in Central & South America & especially Brazil (where magtech is made & Civilians have to use under 9mm again from NWO). If I was anywhere there a 3" primary .38 and a 2" Backup might see a good person though. Also regarding .380 recoil bid difference from Modern ones w Browning Tilting Barrel actions & most classic ones & tiny ones with Direct Blowback people should realize. I've shot the new Bodyguard 2.0 twice now too small for me two handed but one handed it works well like most ww1 & ww2 Pocket .32s

I wish manufacturers would stop wasting their time, R&D, and manufacturing resources to make .380 JHP that are tested out of stupid long barrels. Just go with the Lehigh-type of self-defense loads if you're going to pay a premium.

These tests and others tend to confirm that one might as well use 380 FMJ for self defense because expansion is rare and if it does occur, it causes under penetration. As for the cheap 38 Special JHP load, it seems to work well so no need to spend more money on something else unless the cheap defensive ammo is not available. Thanks for the tests !

I don't think their variances are an intentional "improvement"; I think it's their closest approximation without complete retooling.

While the 380 was rather meh, it wasn't far short of good 380 ammo. The 38Spl looked to me to be as good as Remington's "HTP" load; the load that is probably the exact same as the traditional green and yellow box stuff that Paul Harrell liked. 250 ft-lbs is also right what you get when you hit the magic 950fps with a 125gr bullet. That seems to be the velocity that most hollow points need to start to open.

Hello Sam, if memory serves, you've not tested .32 acp in a walther pp size (Beretta 70, beretta 82, mab D model and so on) gun yet, if you have a chance to do it, you will in my opinion get a greater accuracy than you did today with the .380, at least with Fiocchi fmj or lrn. When I was fresh from competition practice, I got a 49 (4 ten, 1 nine) one handed at 25 meters with a beretta 82, I couldn't replicate it with a .380. Anyway, given the performance you got from these two loads at 75 yards, I'd say they're not the best for their caliber.

Good test, Sam! I'm sure there's a lot of people out that are forced by economics into using the cheaper lines of ammo, something I'm well aware of having been there and done that! I will say that anytime a 38 +P doesn't spank a .380, there's something seriously wrong! Personally I consider the .380 to the absolute bottom of the list when it comes to self defense, and then only when using the best ammo available! While standard pressure .38 might be a little closer to .380, it's still usually better. Personally, when it comes to .380 the only ammo I will carry for serious work is the Lehigh Extreme Defender bullet. I get an average of 1200 fps from the dinky barrel of my AMT Backup, which I think is phenomenal. Even my favorite bullet, the Speer Gold Dot is not reliable out of the short barreled AMT. I know a lot of guys use FMJ in their .380 for the reason you stated, which means they certainly should be using the Underwoid or Lehigh loading of the XD bullet because it "might" work better than an FMJ (it will!). FMJ performance is of course fairly useless in the real world.
I use the same Underwood ammo in .38, although I no longer carry revolvers. My wife on the other hand likes the little Colt Cobra, which unfortunately is restricted to using standard pressure .38 ammo. Like the .380, it's getting 1200 fps out of it's 1.5 or so inch barrel.
    Cheers,
    jc
