Yes, but for some reason we always think it's necessary! We think it's what our lives need. I have noticed a lot of people examining the psychology behind consumerism. We may be on the brink of a paradigm shift that will put us on a war footing with the corporate oligarchs. Phone shops exist to assist old people on their phone issues. They take commission on their sales hence why it’s more expensive and to charge you for the “help” they give you. Black Friday used to bring massive deals in America but in the UK it’s just a word to get you to buy their out dated stock. The price is raised months before Black Friday so they are able to discount it especially for you and label it as an amazing deal when it’s the price it should have been. Just like Tesco club card price, just give us what we all deserve. There is no loyalty in companies, does matter how long you’ve been with them you won’t get a special tailored deal. Trust no one when it comes to money, only but if it’s essential and don’t fall for their marketing trap. Another great vid Turnip!
Do they not also exist so you can try out a new phone to see if you like it first. I'll only go in the ones in the local shopping centre though and laugh at all the sheep in the Apple store as I pass.

Yep. £250 on a solid android, use for 3 years, £10 gifgaf, sell for £75. Works out about £15/month. Never had a contact. Never broken a phone. Absolutely baffled by the contract deals my colleagues have
Couple of years back I was after a monitor so thought i'd wait till Black Friday, i'd had my eye on one for several months just to see how much i'd save. Just before the Black Friday deals the price of the monitor jumped up £300 and when Black Friday arrived they dropped the price down by £200 telling the unaware that they were saving £200! I waited another month and shopped elsewhere and got it slightly cheaper, but it just goes to show how much of it all is a scam!!

At least it is over a week rather than a day now. Remember when it first came to the UK when people were rushing into supermarkets and fighting over crap Polaroid Smart TVs and stuff like that? Someone was going to get killed. I presumed Black Friday was for stores to clear their unwanted stock ready for Christmas but last week, I was in a service station and saw that Sbarros, the pizza slice shop - that only sells about four variants of pizza all year round, was also having a Black Friday deal. Now, all shops are taking advantage of people who are in buying mode. Don't worry-you're not missing out on a deal when there's Amazon Prime Day, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Boxing Day Sales, January Sales, and Amazon Prime Week again…
It's a game they play. You are able to switch providers and take your phone number with you. Ask for the PAC code, which you will give to your new provider. This transfers the number across.
Well done on coming out ahead! Here’s what I do: I keep a list of items I need, want, or plan to upgrade, and I check prices randomly throughout the year. If it’s close to Black Friday or the January sales, I’ll hold off on buying to see if a better deal comes along. Sometimes this works out, but more often, I notice prices go up before Black Friday, stay higher afterward, and then drop again in January. In my experience, January sales tend to offer better deals than Black Friday, with prices either falling further or matching their Black Friday lows. The only exception is items they’re trying to clear out, like last year’s models-those tend to sell out during Black Friday and don’t return for discounts in January. So, I prioritize picking those up if they’re on my list. That said, I don’t always wait for sales. If I spot something at its lowest price and I need or want it, I’ll buy it right away rather than hold out.
I agree. I volunteer in a charity shop in Northumberland. We are currently snowed under with binbags full of the dubious “bargains” people were suckered into buying last year! NOTHING undermines your faith in human common sense like a couple of years in the back room of a popular charity shop!
The interaction with the shop attendant and the phone attendant is ABSOLUTELY bonkers! I'm surprised why neither could have honored the promotion being advertised. The sales cycle has definitely merged together. Black Friday & Cyber Monday was never huge in Canada until maybe 15-20 years ago. It used to be that the best technology gadget deals were had on Cyber Monday, but it doesn't have that differentiation now.
With Phone Providers I think they specifically make their stores uncompetitive on purpose to try and force them to close. It's the same with bank's being open in the week when everyone's at work and closed at weekends. With the RBS near me that was very popular even in the week and I even saw it do restricted hours during the week and as we saw they just mass shut them down. With no rhyme or reason. Just to pretend that people don't use banks anymore. They did the same with post office utterly bizzare opening hours now. It's mind numbing, but obvious they just want as much money as possible.
Why the surprise? It’s not the fault of the US that the UK seems to be all in on adopting “American” ideas - do you have an explanation for why there’s 4th of July and Thanksgiving stuff here? Seems like a bit of a self own, IMO. I promise you we American expats are very confused by this tendency to adopt US holiday-adjacent advertising and customs. 🤷🏼♀️
The ridiculous thing is that it was invented in the US (of course) as the day after Thanksgiving which was traditionally a day with sales as no one went shopping the day after Thanksgiving. It was called Black Friday because it was also the day that most stores turned a profit after losing money all year....
@@christipping7832 pleeese don’t invent cyber Monday… it will end up in everyone walking like robots on. particular Monday… actually I’m in haha 😛🤣🤷🏻♀️♥️
Great rant, also very funny. I think the bricks and mortar phone shops assume you are much less ‘tech savvy’ and therefore a gullible, easy ‘rip off sale’
Even if you go into one prepared with all the deals you've checek out online and ask them if they can match they just flat out refuse. Also, most if not all of the upgrade 'deals' are a rip off and more expensive than the ones for the new customers which is why it's not worth to stay with the same provider, and the 36months contracts they've been trying to push for some time now are insane. Switching providers and keeping your number is super easy now so at least there's that.
Loved this. Best bit was after the rant about Black Friday and the ending, RUclips decided to add a Black Friday ad for Boots at the end!!!! It’s almost like they were saying F U, we’re going to sell you this crap whether you like it or not

Hoo hoo hoo! Absolutely loved this rant! Here in the states I've only just started enjoying the holidays after PTSD from serving 6 years in retail black Fridays. One year the store opened on Thanksgiving at 5pm!! Horrible times! Buying phones are scams in general so regardless of the hype always compare those prices before! Glad you got a deal tho! Brave Turnip!! ❤❤❤
You don't need to buy any more rubbish to be happy! They have people trapped in a constant pit of buy buy buy to feel better. Literally every aspect of life is becoming this way eff em. All a joke, same 7 companies will own everything in't UK soon. No daft subscriptions needed to enjoy life.
Hi, lve never been drawn into black Friday.loved your rant. Its great you've got lovely woods to go out walking with your wee doggo. Ive got a Pomchi. Thanks 😊
My understanding is that after Thanks Giving (Thursday) many Americans also have the Friday off so start their Christmas shopping - so much so that that day would mark the point at which many stores "went into the black" profit wise. Anyway , Happy Cyber Monday Turnip!
Great Rant Mr Burnip , i hate black friday , cyber monday , all the christmas crap too !!!! i want to buy a cooker, but the shop i looked at only had two cookers and neither of them did i want !1 i will just have to wait !! You make great content .. and the bricks one , brilliant ! Yes rant away we love it xx M
Phone companies are the absolute worst when it comes to sorting out new contracts. I mentioned to my one that I was going to shop arround for deals before resigning and got a bunch of deals... the "this deal is really special and limited you must sign up to it now or lose the chance to have it forever" deals. Their head office got a strongly worded email telling them not to speak to me again. Ended up resigning with them for a service that was twice as good as my current "special deal" and cost 5 quid less. things I found out online when I shopped around.
Excellent rant, Sir. For information, you can keep your phone number when switching networks by giving the new network a 'PAC' (Porting Authorization Code) that your old network must provide.
Black Friday comes from stores being in "The Red" all year and finally moving to "The Black" - when they truly leave behind the red ink of the ledger and start making a real annual profit before Christmas and the end of the year.
I HEAR YA GIRLFRIEND! Seriously, some American tradition we really didn't need to adopt. Black Friday, more like Black Monday to Sunday for the whole of November. Enough!
I worked in an outlet shop. We did a 'deal' where a handbag which we sold for £17.50, outlet price went up to £20. It is a scam and people fall for it 😅 But so do I, I just bought myself new boots and I cannot wait until they arrive! 🤭
I work in retail and a lot of times throughout the year we just change the colours of the labels lol. However there are also good deals to be had but you need to shop smartly and keep an eye on prices throughout the year. I always do my best to be honest with customers, so if someone asks me if a price is a sale price and it's not then I do tell them that.
Black Friday is the American version of Boxing Day sales, because it is the day after Thanks Giving. It's just a way of parting the sheeple from their money.Only ever buy what you need.
Take a few days off our kid. This has upset me to see you not yourself. You're a lovely man. Spend time with your partner, try and remove what is annoying you from your head. Lot's of love from Nottingham x
Those days physical high street stores very rarely can compete with online offers. You know better than anybody else how much are business rates, then add wages and other bills on top and you end up with what you got - way shittier deal than the one available online. If physical stores want to compete with online offers, they can't try to beat them in straight "who's cheaper" fight as they will never win. Their offer has to be about personal service, which loads of people still value, then about prices alone.
Which is why chain stores will never be able to revive the high street. Apart from being boring and charmless - they are obviously going to cost more because they're a physical shop. Chain stores are the frost bite and then bookies, pay day loan and cash converters are the gangrene. We need proper, physical, interesting, niche shops in 'high streets' because then it's an experience that may even be psychologically rewarding. I'm starting to think we really do need to revitalise 'high streets' with singular shops. We need it back. Pittance ground rates for singular shops. The big, ugly, uninspired chains can live online.
@@GoldilocksZone-665 Wandering Turnip definitely needs to have a look at Rotherham. All the chain stores have abandoned it for Meadowhall & Parkgate Retail Park leaving behind nothing but cheap tat shops but there are some really good niche independent shops that are still flying the flag for the town centre like Yella Brick Road
I looked online on Friday and some of the prices were HIGHER on "sale"! I was watching some sites and shops for any sale that may occur so generally I knew the base prices pretty well. I did have to go out for some essentials and all the shops were RAMMED full of the SCAMMED!
Its Black two weeks not just a fecking day, and now have cyber Monday 🤷♂ My phone has NO touch screen, NO camera, nice pressing buttons and the only feature is 1 single LED torch. 🤣 I still have a landline too.

How old are you?. I stopped using a landline 15 years ago. No point. The days of using 90's tech are long gone. The only benefit is you avoid social media somewhat. I have a shoebox full of Nokia, Motorola sony Ericsson etc hopefully I will donate to a museum one day.
It was just the same 10 years ago when I still used a TV,ringing sky or virgin trying to get a cheaper deal as they kept increasing my monthly debit due to inflation and such bull. Keep the videos coming dude you’re crushing it 🔥🇬🇧
I always understood that 'Black Friday' sales was the way you got rid of all the old stock before the new stock came in for Christmas. - And don't forget this is all profit, as old stock is devalued in value on the shops books the older it gets.
My computer speakers happened to blow this past week, was searching high and low for some good deals, though when you look at the historical price, the 'deal' they present is the price it's been all year!
its like those places that say going out of business sale everything must go and when you go in the store the prices are the same as everywhere else and now the store has been going out of business for 2 years
There's one like that near me. I think it had only been open a few weeks before the "closing down sale" signs appeared, and have now been therefore months with no sign of stock levels going down. Even overheard someone else remark on it the other day.
You can keep your existing phone number when changing provider, it’s called porting. For a sim only deal, I pay £6 a month, on a one month contract, not locked in for years.
They have had black Friday "sales" here in NY since late October. From now til Christmas I'm avoiding places like target and Walmart til after new years day. Black Friday brings out the worst in shoppers
I avoided it, no ads on Egyptain social media :) I have not seen a single Christmas ad either :) Back Dec 19th, won't mind a bit of festive noise around then . You loose the pen very quickly, had one in around 2001. Getting an Android is a good move, an old Huawei P30 pro does all you need, great camera for around £150. I pay £12 a month for loads of data on Vodafone and still get free roming in Europe, your £6 deal sounds great. I love the ad that played whilst watching your vid, was how to meditate and chill :) :) Love the ending " Nice and calm...."
This is ridiculous. I generally agree with the sentiment, but BF is free money. I set my shopping card up a couple of months back, building it up with stuff I needed to buy anyway, monitored prices to make sure they didn't drop them pump as some places do, got 20% off then went about my day..... that's it.
Great video! Your rambling rants remind me a bit of the Paul Whitehouse character on the Fast Show who walked through the countryside rambling about everything being brillllliiiiiaaaannnntttt😊😊. Agree totally with you on the Black Friday nonsense.
I'm watching you and taking an extra breath, each step you take for your walk. I agree with you. Black Friday bllocks. Love watching your videos. Keep it up 😘
I saved a fortune in the Black Friday sales, I bought naff all, apart from needing an oven dish, so I ventured to TK Maxx after my trip to Lidl for groceries and it was rammed with more tools than B&Q. I swear nowadays people are so engrossed in their little lives that they don’t think of others, it shows in their actions and behaviour, especially whilst shopping. Regarding mobile phones, a few of the networks have shafted me over the years, they all add a load of crappy extras we don’t need. I’m happy with my older iPhone 13. I want to live in the woods too, especially this time of year.

I love your little walking companion loyally trotting behind. Keep on with the rants!
If you can wait until Black Friday you probably don't need the item.
Love the ramble and rant, keep 'em coming.
Consumer culture is crazy!! Great rant Turnip, you’re the best ❤❤❤
Apart from grocery shopping I don't buy anything else around christmas.
So you don’t buy toilet paper how do you wipe your ass with your dirty sock?
Try to contain yourself, it's cyber Monday 🤣
🤬🤬🤬
@@kaybee2930 so cyber Monday is we spend nothing and all walk like robots and buy nothing hahahahhaha 🤣♥️
@@Avrilmaep WE...ARE...THE...ROBOTS........
I agree. I volunteer in a charity shop in Northumberland. We are currently snowed under with binbags full of the dubious “bargains” people were suckered into buying last year!
NOTHING undermines your faith in human common sense like a couple of years in the back room of a popular charity shop!
... except working for the Charities Commission, perhaps. That's a real eye-opener.
"Black Friday" is an American idea, surprise surprise
Why the surprise? It’s not the fault of the US that the UK seems to be all in on adopting “American” ideas - do you have an explanation for why there’s 4th of July and Thanksgiving stuff here? Seems like a bit of a self own, IMO. I promise you we American expats are very confused by this tendency to adopt US holiday-adjacent advertising and customs. 🤷🏼♀️
@@caboosek $$$$
Sorry, I meant ££££
Omg just watched ya vid all way to end and just yes pls don’t stop you doing you we all love you for it hunni ❤😂❤
The ridiculous thing is that it was invented in the US (of course) as the day after Thanksgiving which was traditionally a day with sales as no one went shopping the day after Thanksgiving. It was called Black Friday because it was also the day that most stores turned a profit after losing money all year....
That was hilarious 🤣 I was just thinking about Cyber Monday and then you whopped it out in the rant. Brilliant 😂
@@christipping7832 pleeese don’t invent cyber Monday… it will end up in everyone walking like robots on. particular Monday… actually I’m in haha 😛🤣🤷🏻♀️♥️
Ted hanging back like... "Oh here we go, Dad's about to blow, I'm just gonna chill and do my own thing..." :)
Great rant, also very funny. I think the bricks and mortar phone shops assume you are much less ‘tech savvy’ and therefore a gullible, easy ‘rip off sale’
It's more a case of actually talking to a real person who we think might be knowledgeable and also getting your hands on the phone before buying it.
Retailers have abused the "ON SALE" tactic for soooo many decades that theyre pretty much for the gullible now.
Is the DFS sale still on? Must be at least 30 years old now.
@@antonycharnock2993 DFS have a sale on?...Holy moly, Im rushing over there sharpish, i really dont want to miss out on those deals.
Man, I feel like I have found a kindred spirit. Laughed out loud several times 😂
Loved this. Best bit was after the rant about Black Friday and the ending, RUclips decided to add a Black Friday ad for Boots at the end!!!! It’s almost like they were saying F U, we’re going to sell you this crap whether you like it or not
I love your rant! I feel you! Your bricks are a fantastic idea! More power to you Wandering Turnip! Alsways loook forward to your videos . Keep going man! Black Friday is such a con we fall for!!!!
Turnip , u would have to have the nicest “angry” rant I’ve heard. The lack of cussing is refreshing
Mad respect to you for having the balls to insist on a better deal.
and the patience to deal with those calls too, it's like talking to a wall
Great ending david..wetting myself laughing! 😂😂😂
Havent got any bricks but really enjoyed your terrific rant, offset by the nice scenery and cuddly toy on legs in the background.
Well done son. At 55, I no longer recognise aspects of this country/culture. American rubbish along with this cyber Monday rubbish.
I saw a poster today advertising black week. Sick of it. It’s basically a pre Christmas sale.
Black Friday comes from stores being in "The Red" all year and finally moving to "The Black" - when they truly leave behind the red ink of the ledger and start making a real annual profit before Christmas and the end of the year.
And the RUclips ad algorithm follows this with.....two Black Friday themed ads.
It is a scam and people fall for it 😅
But so do I, I just bought myself new boots and I cannot wait until they arrive!
“But I saved ex amount!” You didn’t save, you spent your money 😂
Black Friday is the American version of Boxing Day sales, because it is the day after Thanks Giving. It's just a way of parting the sheeple from their money.Only ever buy what you need.
Just had a Black Friday ad in the middle of your rant! 😂 Ted is a cutie! Oh and I loved the video about bricks too, really interesting 🙂
Take a few days off our kid. This has upset me to see you not yourself. You're a lovely man. Spend time with your partner, try and remove what is annoying you from your head.
Lot's of love from Nottingham x
Thank you for cheering me up, appreciated the rant
Agreed, sadly the rates and rents are so prohibitive that boo one bit the chain stores can afford them and that's a crime but done deliberately.
Never trust salesperson they are scamming you
Those TV fights in supermarkets were epic though!!!!
I looked online on Friday and some of the prices were HIGHER on "sale"! I was watching some sites and shops for any sale that may occur so generally I knew the base prices pretty well. I did have to go out for some essentials and all the shops were RAMMED full of the SCAMMED!
Excellent rant!! Couldn't agree more.
Now it’s cyber monday 😂😂😂 but you did get a good £6 per month deal. Bless you and you rant 😂😂
Love the dry stone walls (?) covered in moss. Looks like a beautiful place to wander.
Its Black two weeks not just a fecking day, and now have cyber Monday 🤷♂
My phone has NO touch screen, NO camera, nice pressing buttons and the only feature is 1 single LED torch.
Nokia 105?
Those simple phones use an RTOS,very predictable operation and no Google spyware!
It was just the same 10 years ago when I still used a TV,ringing sky or virgin trying to get a cheaper deal as they kept increasing my monthly debit due to inflation and such bull. Keep the videos coming dude you’re crushing it 🔥🇬🇧
It used to be fun when it was a massive scramble & punch ups…. Now everyone just get the deals online… how dull! 😂
I HATE Black Friday…only about insane consumption. I do not partake and won’t look online either.
I always understood that 'Black Friday' sales was the way you got rid of all the old stock before the new stock came in for Christmas. - And don't forget this is all profit, as old stock is devalued in value on the shops books the older it gets.
Whenever there's a Special deal, always push for MORE.
please everyone, only buy if you really do NEED the goods ‼️ Don't get sucked in ... 😮
My computer speakers happened to blow this past week, was searching high and low for some good deals, though when you look at the historical price, the 'deal' they present is the price it's been all year!
I hate black Friday, ooh its black Friday month now. How ridiculous it has become.
its like those places that say going out of business sale everything must go and when you go in the store the prices are the same as everywhere else and now the store has been going out of business for 2 years
There's one like that near me. I think it had only been open a few weeks before the "closing down sale" signs appeared, and have now been therefore months with no sign of stock levels going down. Even overheard someone else remark on it the other day.
The perpetual DFS sale.
You can keep your existing phone number when changing provider, it’s called porting. For a sim only deal, I pay £6 a month, on a one month contract, not locked in for years.
I came here to say this!
@@leilaswansborough Sorry!
They have had black Friday "sales" here in NY since late October. From now til Christmas I'm avoiding places like target and Walmart til after new years day. Black Friday brings out the worst in shoppers
I'm fairly sure you can change mobile provider as keep the same number. when leaving your phone provider request a PAC code
Never mind Black Friday, I was stressing that poor Ted's little legs weren't keeping up with you and he was getting left behind! 😆
I think poor Ted might be getting on in doggie years.
NEVER HAVE AND NEVER WILL.
Loved the rant. At the end YT supplied an ad for BF. Yup. Just as bad here in France.
Great rant.Turns out the phone shop had your number! It's why these contracts have a cooling-off period. Black Friday is such a massive scam.
My man straight up swaggering in this vid. Swag on my dude.
Ha ha You my friend are like a younger version of myself. Your rants make me feel normal again 💜
Yes man! I'm out of the loop but, fuck me! I went shopping for a pair of shorts and couldn't move for people😂. Rant on!😊😊😊
If I don't see someone knock over a grannie for a sub par 32 inch TV then it doesn't really feel like the start of the festive season tbh, sad times 😢
