most of the characters on this show were that. the janitor, tedd, the brain trust in general, cox's brother-in-law/best friend, JD's brother...supporting characters that stick with you. and that's not even talking about all the main characters! :)

I didn't like Elliot in this episode. Is she forgetting everything cox did to show her he respects her? 1. Punching kelso in the face 2. Helping her realize that despite Molly's personal life she made her a better doctor and was good for her 3. Helping her get Jake saying it'd be nice to see her happy for a change 4. Asking for her help with the teenage girl patient and listening to her when she said every woman feels insecure 5. Giving her the chief resident job JD is definitely his favorite but he cared about her too

Derok Deathaxe I know you replied this a long time ago but I just wanted to say that Dr. Cox didn’t help Elliott originally with Kelso because he had his own stuff going on to deal with. He is supposed to be there for them but he’s still got his own life. But through Elliott’s conflict with Kelso, when JD tells him he’ll be an excellent father because he’d deal with Kelso if Elliott was his daughter, that’s when Dr. Cox’s own stuff is resolved because he realizes he knows what to do, so he can now help Elliott by punching Kelso in the face
The show stopped being consistent after about season 4 and became stagnant and a few seasons later went off the rails especially when it started making fun of itself. You and other people can give their own logic on it but the truth is the writers just ran out of ideas. The original idea was a typical story about young adults learning about life and career and it was set against the backdrop of them being doctors. Any show that is like this ends up stagnating once they become experienced, stable adults. The devoted fanbase this show has, me included, is why it managed to last long enough to become stale.

Elliot has this thing about getting pissed off and forgetting about what help she's ever gotten. Cox punching Kelso, when her med student screwed up and Carla lied to her and Cox reminded her that Carla was the one who kept the secret when she screwed up repositioning the swans. Seriously, when she gets pissy, she gets selfish and forgets everyone but herself.
She's easily the worst character in the show, morally speaking. Never forget the time she slept with JD, then ditched him maybe an hour later because Shaun came back, then got pissy with JD for being angry about the whole thing and not being a supportive friend...and the show played it out like we were supposed to side with her??

JD was (ironically) a man about it and just accepted the man for what he was. that was because JD was sensitive enough to see where it came from whereas elliot could never get past the superficial ranting lunatic on the surface. it was because dr. cox cared so much about his fellow man that it shattered him whenever he was disappointed or unable to help. so he put up the angry face as a defense against caring so much, because it hurt him so much. he says as much on the day JD finally leaves - that JD was the only one who ever cared as much as he did. really, very bruce wayne of him. elliot was a fool who was so obsessed with her own failings she was incapable of seeing the truth of those that mattered most to her life, and frankly i thought JD was too good for her.

The I-hate-Cox chat room joke is one of the best in the entire show. Sarah Chalkes ability to deliver dry punchlines were often forced, but that one she nailed.
For a show based on comedy (a bunch of it super silly, which I also loved), Scrubs also gave us some of the most tear jerking scenes ever filmed. Goddamn I loved this show.
My favorite moment is when he says ”JD… thank you” In the bar at the end of the episode following his break down after ”my lunch”. He really respected JD alot
Dr. Cox always reminds me of the men I have worked with nearly all my life. They taught me that respect is earned and that sometimes, it is not given for a really long time, but when it is, it is something that is not to be given lightly. I respect Dr. Cox for how he teaches and even though is an ass, he is the kind of guy that he's an ass when he has to be. Those are the guys that sacrifice more than most people know.
One of the most underestimated and characterizing scenes in all the episodes. For the both of them. Delivered perfectly by the actors. Always fun to watch!

Elliot forgot that Cox basically risked his job for her when he punched Kelso in the face when he was trying to break her down. Except for that, in early seasons he was mostly a jerk to her lol.

Just goes to show how hated Kelso actually was. It's easy to say Dr.Cox was the abrasive one everyone didn't like, but they DESPISED Kelso because, while Dr.Cox was fighting for the patients, Kelso was mostly fighting for the revenue stream and, while money is important to maintain a hospital, he did so at the expense of the actual people.

Alucard That WAS the focal point of one episode but then you’ve got another one where he actually feels remorse over Cox’s patient dying due to being passed up for an experimental treatment but is just too proud to show it.
I always wanted Elliot to be called out over things like this. It seemed more like she was jealous of JD and Cox's relationship. Cox was a dick to everyone including JD but he had deep moments with him...that happened because JD was unrelentless in his pursuit of Cox's aproval. Elliot just wanted the same special treatment with none of the effort.

I'm hoping when and if he decides to go back into acting he ends up with a role that brings him into the limelight. Sort of like Bryan Cranston. We didnt think he was as amazing as he is until he played Walter White in Breaking Bad. After that everyone fell in love with him and realized how incredible of an actor he is.

People keep talking just about Cox punching kelso in the face for her, but Cox did a lot of other things as well. Yes he was mean a lot of the time, but in the first 2 seasons, he repeatedly reassured her and stopped making her doubt herself. In my old lady, he tells her not to doubt her call and that she made the right call. In the episode where Jill first was introduced, he completely ignored the fact that she disobeyed his order, made her realize she was too self-critical and then kindly told her to stop being so hard on herself. In the episode where she wants to be his go to intern, he calls her a good doctor when she won't call the time of death and tells her that she has to call it. He said she was a doctor with integrity to the private practice doctor and spoke like he was proud of her (after which she went into private practice anyway). He gave her advice on asking out that guy who wanted to go kayaking in new Zealand and told her he wanted to see her happy finally. And of course, he punched kelso. He repeatedly looked out for both JD and Elliot (and presumably all the other interns) so Elliot has no clue what she's talking about.
Elliot is such a crybaby. Dr. Cox treats everyone equally, he's mean to all the doctors and nurses. It's called tough love; look at how J.D. turned out. He's the freakin' safety net! Elliot should be thankful.

this scene is very touching, but i think dr. cox's "You're welcome" at the end really brings out the genuineness of the whole conversation and his relationship with Elliot.
“You never show me respect” he let you risk his perfect game, punched out kelso and made you chief resident.....yeah Cox NEVER did anything for Elliot 🙄
This show is what taught me about using humor to build drama. That is, allowing the humor to be humor, and puncturing it with a serious moment hits the harder by the contrast. Sometimes even doing it backward works well to, having a serious moment punctuated by a joke, (although it’s harder to do the latter properly and is where the MCU has really fumbled in recent years).
As a writer I love this scene because it's dramatic but also hate it because it makes no sense. Cox has stood up for Elliot multiple times and she was aware of it too. This seemed out of character for her. Her being angry at him mocking her makes sense but if she had something like "I was trying to look out for you and it's messed up you turned that against me" it would've made more sense for her character and would've made sense for Cox to feel bad about it
"With me, you've never been anything but an unsupportive bastard, and you know it." Well, there was the time Dr. Cox punched out Kelso for her, and when her patient died and Cox told her that it wasn't her fault. So, that's really unfair.
the thing that is really telling here is the well written example of Elliot not really giving a crap about Perry, but coming at him and demanding he show her respect. You don't get respect because you want it, you get it when you've earned it and with Perry Cox it's a thing that requires you to put the patient first - and Elliot never did.
Heartbreaking thing about the end of this scene is that he opens up his heart and is vulnerable for a few seconds just to make her feel better, not him.

when you do one nice thing thats as selfish for you, hitting someone you hate, among a lifetime of being a jerk, it tends to get forgotten, a lot of people here seem to want to jump on elliot for needing a little different approach than what worked for one guy, cox is a complex character, he is not all bad, but he sure ain't all good.
One good thing doesn’t erase everything horrible thing. Besides Cox has always been the most selfish, egotistical asshole on the show he refuses to accept people doing nice things for him and gets pissy when other don’t accept the one on million times he’s a decent person. I will never understand the romanticizing of Cox he’s a wel written character but that doesn’t make him a good person.
I don't think that this is Elliot being a bad character, I think this is just Season 5's writers being bad writers, having forgotten that Cox did a lot of good things for her in previous episodes. Best evidence for this is Dr. Cox's face after Elliot says that he's always been unsupportive implies that Cox agrees with her.
Agreed. She has loads of respect for him as a doctor, and seeing that she n JD started out together and constantly shadow Dr. Cox, JD is more of his go-to guy rather than Elliot...for anything really. She deserves that heart-to-heart with him.
So I know that Elliot and Cox aren’t what you would call friends but I love this episode simply because it’s parallel to what Elliot went through in “my Old Lady” when she couldn’t decide on a treatment for her patient she needed to make a choice but was too scared. I think being able to admit that he was afraid was more than just a gesture of respect but a reminder to Elliot that even someone as skilled as dr Cox is capable of not knowing what choice to make
Scrubs really has some nice soundtracks. World spins madly on, winter, how to save a life, don't stop believin'.. just to name a few. I think now an then Zach Braff had something to do with it.
I have a cousin who served un the Army. During basic training he dealt with a drill instructor who told him, "Every time you see my face I want you to drop and give me 25 pushups." My cousin hated that DI, despised him. Later on my cousin received Soldier of the Year... Guess who nominated him? The same DI who rode his ass into the dirt. Sometimes the people who treat you the harshest have the most to teach... And they ride you hoping that you'll live up to the potential that they see in you. Dr Cox is one of those people. He'll never admit it, but he cares.
It's funny because at the end Cox shows that indeed he has changed. This is something he would not have done earlier. To admit to a weakness of his, something he's probably deeply ashamed of and even saying out loud hurts his pride tremendously to someone that is not a close confident of his, one of the few he would entrust such a personal revelation with, just to make them feel better and respected...that is incredible character development.
A lot of people are saying that Elliot keeps forgetting the nice things Dr.Cox has done for her...but think about it like this. They work together just about every single day for twelve hours+ for 365 days a year. You can count on your hand the number of times that Cox has said something nice about her or has helped her out etc. So if you think about each of those things taking place one day out of the year for six, seven or eight years, that means he's been nice to her roughly 1 time per year. It would make it difficult for anyone to remember those few/rare good deeds between all that cynicism. Still, Elliot does seem to forget that Dr.Cox has risked his career at least once or twice to urge her on. Just a thought.
Even when elliot wasn’t his favorite, he surely treated her better then others, let her into his space, allowed her to eat with him, punched kelso for her. Ironically I think she was kelsos favorite, as proven by the later parts of the series. Elliot being friends with jordan, and being close with JD, abd ending up with him also didn’t damage his opinion about her.
I don't know why but I feel that Dr Cox's explanation of wanting to seem 'bulletproof' was said because of what JD said to him in the previous episode. How JD still wanted to view him as a 'superhero'
I think at the end, deep down, Cox would have been proud of barbie to stand up and demand respect like that. As harsh the timing may have been, she did the right thing and I'm sure gained his trust too
Totally understood what Dr. Cox's leadership was about. I was a Platoon Sergeant in a unique platoon during the 2003 Iraqi Invasion. 20 males/20 females and an LT. I only had a few weeks to train them before the kick off. I didnt have time to cuddle them, build a rapport. I had to produce a combat ready platoon and it scared me that some of my people were gonna have them killed, either by enemy or by our own stupidity or even dumb luck. So, even though I was a kind spirit, I had to be an A-hole. I figured, being an A-hole to them, make them focus on either A. Impressing me by showing that they're better than me. B. Get angry at me and focus on doing their job effectively. C. Fear me and doing what's neccessary to complete the mission. D. Understood that all this was to have their mind focus on what I give them and not think of being killed. The one thing I couldn't show was I was vulnerable. I had tons of bouts of crying, though, I went off to a sand dune or a port-a-john and cried quietly alone. Once we finally established a F.O.B (Foward Operating Base), I slowly became that compassionate leader I wanted. At the end of 14 months, I had myself a family of Death Dealers. Finally, this scene with Elliott and Cox, was similar situation involving a Squad Leader (female) and myself. I pushed her harder than anything because she's was like me. Yet, I pushed her really hard that she'd closed off bit by bit. She got wounded during combat and I "flipped out" and got her out of there. I was guilt ridden. When I'd finally brought the courage to come and see her, she'd reacted not so well and she finally poured out her frustration and anger at me. Went on a rant about how until then, she respected me because I was tough yet, how I disregarded my safety to rescue her and jeopardized the mission, she was angry that I'd only rescued her was because I didn't want lose someone on my watch. I told her I totally agree with her. All of it was true with an addition...that bullet was supposed to be mine. She was taller than me. It hit her center of her chest. The shooter was ranged it for a shorter guy. That shooter was ranged for a headshot. That bullet was there for me and end my life...or at least have a canoe head. At that moment, I was vulnerable. I felt guilty to for her to convinced me to take point. She only wanted to show that she was worthy in my eyes. We both cried out our sorrows...then we had a laughing fit. (wtf are we crying about? Feel sad in being alive? Yeah ok!) Word spread to the Platoon that I was human, therefore, I added a new sense of respect.
If you dont already know there is a podcast that's run by JD and Turk. It's called Fake Doctors Real Friends. The have many guests, including the other actors and actresses from Scrubs.
Of course Dr Cox has helped Elliot before but I think its fair to say that the major (and very few) times he did help her were on episodes and the rest of the year Cox was being his regular annoying self to Elliot. Helping someone a few times doesn't make up for constant abuse. By the I like Dr Cox, but Elliot has the right to say this.
I think Eliot misunderstood him here: It's a tough phase for him to cope with him feeling responsible for the three people who died under his watch and his ,,games" he plays with Eliot here is because he is afraid to make decisions on his own again as he finally admits near the end of the Episode. Furthermore, he wants to keep his head up high and not scratch on his mistake so he behaves differently towards Eliot. But it is clear that he still cares a lot for her and even if he acts more harsh on her here, he only wants the best for her 🥺🥺🥺
So many people in the comments trying to jump to voice Cox's defense don't really they're taking away from his phenomenal growth in this moment. Yeah, years ago in the show's timeline he punched Dr. Kelso while he was being mean to her but so what? That's something he always wanted to do anyway and he didn't care about any consequences he might incur for doing it so you can't really he say he didn't it for her like it was done grand gesture that would make up for everything else. But here she didn't ask for any apology for his past behavior she just called him out for it and explains how she's always respected him but never felt it reciprocated. And at that point he does two amazing things that for his character are amazing and show tremendous growth. He admits a time he was feeling human and vulnerable and then perhaps even more amazingly openly admits the reason he's telling her this is for her know he respects her. A lot of scrubs fans in the comments have called Dr. Cox one of the best written characters on tv and i agree. And this right here is one of the best moments examples of how his character has grown throughout the show. So don't be so quick to just jump down Elliot's throat and say she's just ungrateful or childish or whatever, because by trying to defend Dr. Cox, you're robbing him of one of his best moments.
She is childish and thinks the world owes her shite. It's not about defending a fictional character, just pointing out the obvious. But it's probably just written badly because Elliott's character is pretty inconsistent in general.

Elliot forgot that Cox basically risked his job for her when he punched Kelso in the face when he was trying to break her down. Except for that, in early seasons he was mostly a jerk to her lol.

Just goes to show how hated Kelso actually was. It's easy to say Dr.Cox was the abrasive one everyone didn't like, but they DESPISED Kelso because, while Dr.Cox was fighting for the patients, Kelso was mostly fighting for the revenue stream and, while money is important to maintain a hospital, he did so at the expense of the actual people.

That WAS the focal point of one episode but then you’ve got another one where he actually feels remorse over Cox’s patient dying due to being passed up for an experimental treatment but is just too proud to show it.

I always wanted Elliot to be called out over things like this. It seemed more like she was jealous of JD and Cox's relationship. Cox was a dick to everyone including JD but he had deep moments with him...that happened because JD was unrelentless in his pursuit of Cox's aproval. Elliot just wanted the same special treatment with none of the effort.

I'm hoping when and if he decides to go back into acting he ends up with a role that brings him into the limelight. Sort of like Bryan Cranston. We didnt think he was as amazing as he is until he played Walter White in Breaking Bad. After that everyone fell in love with him and realized how incredible of an actor he is.

People keep talking just about Cox punching kelso in the face for her, but Cox did a lot of other things as well. Yes he was mean a lot of the time, but in the first 2 seasons, he repeatedly reassured her and stopped making her doubt herself. In my old lady, he tells her not to doubt her call and that she made the right call. In the episode where Jill first was introduced, he completely ignored the fact that she disobeyed his order, made her realize she was too self-critical and then kindly told her to stop being so hard on herself. In the episode where she wants to be his go to intern, he calls her a good doctor when she won't call the time of death and tells her that she has to call it. He said she was a doctor with integrity to the private practice doctor and spoke like he was proud of her (after which she went into private practice anyway). He gave her advice on asking out that guy who wanted to go kayaking in new Zealand and told her he wanted to see her happy finally. And of course, he punched kelso.
He repeatedly looked out for both JD and Elliot (and presumably all the other interns) so Elliot has no clue what she's talking about.
Elliot is such a crybaby. Dr. Cox treats everyone equally, he's mean to all the doctors and nurses. It's called tough love; look at how J.D. turned out. He's the freakin' safety net! Elliot should be thankful.

this scene is very touching, but i think dr. cox's "You're welcome" at the end really brings out the genuineness of the whole conversation and his relationship with Elliot.

This show is what taught me about using humor to build drama. That is, allowing the humor to be humor, and puncturing it with a serious moment hits the harder by the contrast. Sometimes even doing it backward works well to, having a serious moment punctuated by a joke, (although it’s harder to do the latter properly and is where the MCU has really fumbled in recent years).

As a writer I love this scene because it's dramatic but also hate it because it makes no sense. Cox has stood up for Elliot multiple times and she was aware of it too. This seemed out of character for her. Her being angry at him mocking her makes sense but if she had something like "I was trying to look out for you and it's messed up you turned that against me" it would've made more sense for her character and would've made sense for Cox to feel bad about it

the thing that is really telling here is the well written example of Elliot not really giving a crap about Perry, but coming at him and demanding he show her respect. You don't get respect because you want it, you get it when you've earned it and with Perry Cox it's a thing that requires you to put the patient first - and Elliot never did.

when you do one nice thing thats as selfish for you, hitting someone you hate, among a lifetime of being a jerk, it tends to get forgotten, a lot of people here seem to want to jump on elliot for needing a little different approach than what worked for one guy, cox is a complex character, he is not all bad, but he sure ain't all good.
One good thing doesn’t erase everything horrible thing. Besides Cox has always been the most selfish, egotistical asshole on the show he refuses to accept people doing nice things for him and gets pissy when other don’t accept the one on million times he’s a decent person. I will never understand the romanticizing of Cox he’s a wel written character but that doesn’t make him a good person.

I don't think that this is Elliot being a bad character, I think this is just Season 5's writers being bad writers, having forgotten that Cox did a lot of good things for her in previous episodes. Best evidence for this is Dr. Cox's face after Elliot says that he's always been unsupportive implies that Cox agrees with her.

So I know that Elliot and Cox aren’t what you would call friends but I love this episode simply because it’s parallel to what Elliot went through in “my Old Lady” when she couldn’t decide on a treatment for her patient she needed to make a choice but was too scared. I think being able to admit that he was afraid was more than just a gesture of respect but a reminder to Elliot that even someone as skilled as dr Cox is capable of not knowing what choice to make

I have a cousin who served un the Army. During basic training he dealt with a drill instructor who told him, "Every time you see my face I want you to drop and give me 25 pushups."
My cousin hated that DI, despised him.
Later on my cousin received Soldier of the Year... Guess who nominated him? The same DI who rode his ass into the dirt.
Sometimes the people who treat you the harshest have the most to teach... And they ride you hoping that you'll live up to the potential that they see in you.
Dr Cox is one of those people. He'll never admit it, but he cares.

It's funny because at the end Cox shows that indeed he has changed. This is something he would not have done earlier. To admit to a weakness of his, something he's probably deeply ashamed of and even saying out loud hurts his pride tremendously to someone that is not a close confident of his, one of the few he would entrust such a personal revelation with, just to make them feel better and respected...that is incredible character development.
This show is a perfect amount of comedy and drama
A lot of people are saying that Elliot keeps forgetting the nice things Dr.Cox has done for her...but think about it like this. They work together just about every single day for twelve hours+ for 365 days a year. You can count on your hand the number of times that Cox has said something nice about her or has helped her out etc. So if you think about each of those things taking place one day out of the year for six, seven or eight years, that means he's been nice to her roughly 1 time per year. It would make it difficult for anyone to remember those few/rare good deeds between all that cynicism. Still, Elliot does seem to forget that Dr.Cox has risked his career at least once or twice to urge her on. Just a thought.

I don't know why but I feel that Dr Cox's explanation of wanting to seem 'bulletproof' was said because of what JD said to him in the previous episode. How JD still wanted to view him as a 'superhero'

Totally understood what Dr. Cox's leadership was about.
I was a Platoon Sergeant in a unique platoon during the 2003 Iraqi Invasion. 20 males/20 females and an LT. I only had a few weeks to train them before the kick off.
I didnt have time to cuddle them, build a rapport. I had to produce a combat ready platoon and it scared me that some of my people were gonna have them killed, either by enemy or by our own stupidity or even dumb luck.
So, even though I was a kind spirit, I had to be an A-hole. I figured, being an A-hole to them, make them focus on either
A. Impressing me by showing that they're better than me.
B. Get angry at me and focus on doing their job effectively.
C. Fear me and doing what's neccessary to complete the mission.
D. Understood that all this was to have their mind focus on what I give them and not think of being killed.
The one thing I couldn't show was I was vulnerable. I had tons of bouts of crying, though, I went off to a sand dune or a port-a-john and cried quietly alone.
Once we finally established a F.O.B (Foward Operating Base), I slowly became that compassionate leader I wanted.
At the end of 14 months, I had myself a family of Death Dealers.
Finally, this scene with Elliott and Cox, was similar situation involving a Squad Leader (female) and myself. I pushed her harder than anything because she's was like me. Yet, I pushed her really hard that she'd closed off bit by bit.
She got wounded during combat and I "flipped out" and got her out of there. I was guilt ridden.
When I'd finally brought the courage to come and see her, she'd reacted not so well and she finally poured out her frustration and anger at me. Went on a rant about how until then, she respected me because I was tough yet, how I disregarded my safety to rescue her and jeopardized the mission, she was angry that I'd only rescued her was because I didn't want lose someone on my watch.
I told her I totally agree with her. All of it was true with an addition...that bullet was supposed to be mine. She was taller than me. It hit her center of her chest. The shooter was ranged it for a shorter guy. That shooter was ranged for a headshot. That bullet was there for me and end my life...or at least have a canoe head.
At that moment, I was vulnerable. I felt guilty to for her to convinced me to take point. She only wanted to show that she was worthy in my eyes.
We both cried out our sorrows...then we had a laughing fit. (wtf are we crying about? Feel sad in being alive? Yeah ok!)
Word spread to the Platoon that I was human, therefore, I added a new sense of respect.
Dr. Cox’s bullet proof attitude is admirable but only when he allows himself a release now and again.

Of course Dr Cox has helped Elliot before but I think its fair to say that the major (and very few) times he did help her were on episodes and the rest of the year Cox was being his regular annoying self to Elliot.

I think Eliot misunderstood him here: It's a tough phase for him to cope with him feeling responsible for the three people who died under his watch and his ,,games" he plays with Eliot here is because he is afraid to make decisions on his own again as he finally admits near the end of the Episode.
Furthermore, he wants to keep his head up high and not scratch on his mistake so he behaves differently towards Eliot.
But it is clear that he still cares a lot for her and even if he acts more harsh on her here, he only wants the best for her 🥺🥺🥺
So many people in the comments trying to jump to voice Cox's defense don't really they're taking away from his phenomenal growth in this moment.
Yeah, years ago in the show's timeline he punched Dr. Kelso while he was being mean to her but so what? That's something he always wanted to do anyway and he didn't care about any consequences he might incur for doing it so you can't really he say he didn't it for her like it was done grand gesture that would make up for everything else.
But here she didn't ask for any apology for his past behavior she just called him out for it and explains how she's always respected him but never felt it reciprocated.
And at that point he does two amazing things that for his character are amazing and show tremendous growth. He admits a time he was feeling human and vulnerable and then perhaps even more amazingly openly admits the reason he's telling her this is for her know he respects her.
A lot of scrubs fans in the comments have called Dr. Cox one of the best written characters on tv and i agree. And this right here is one of the best moments examples of how his character has grown throughout the show.
So don't be so quick to just jump down Elliot's throat and say she's just ungrateful or childish or whatever, because by trying to defend Dr. Cox, you're robbing him of one of his best moments.
She is childish and thinks the world owes her shite. It's not about defending a fictional character, just pointing out the obvious. But it's probably just written badly because Elliott's character is pretty inconsistent in general.
