Did anyone ever bother to read the Metal Zone manual? it actually has diagrams of 6 presets to get you started
Considering the amount of piss that people heap on the thing: no.
Most of these kids don't even play guitar and if they do it's "where 2 dwnlode vst pls???!!!!1"
Just realised, was trying to get a chug but then read the manual, thx a bunch
It also says to put directly in the front of the amp not the return lol.
I got mine used and it didn’t have a manual
I kinda liked it through the amp .. sounded like Bay Area Thrash Metal
they both sounded pretty good
@@siggiarabi Precisely.
The metal zone was specifically created to replicate the guitar tone of Metallica's Black Album
Yea this kids a noob
Yep he was like horrible right? And I was like more like it was decent or ok, far from horrible, I don’t understand the need social media has to exaggerate how “bad” this pedal is when if you’ve ever owned one you know it can actually be pretty good.
1:50 ehhhh what?? I think it’s sounds really good. haha
Totally agree Rickster
Yeah, I thought it sounded fine. Not the type of sound I would use, but fine for what it was. It did sound better through the FX return though.
I actually really dig the first tone. I've heard tones from the pedal I dig. Simon Neil uses one and I adore his tone.
Winter Hisagi I mean. I didn't enjoy the first tone. However that's the beauty of music. It is subjective. Thanks for the view and comment man.
+Riffs and Chugs TV See, that sort of comment is far, far too reasonable to be allowed on the internet. You didn't even call his mom a bad name, question his humanity or anything!
I also like the first one ^_^
The first one sits in the mix slightly better, it sounds more together with the track if you know what I mean
@@heinrichsmit2 So do I. Quite frankly I don't know what he's talking about. It's a great tone.
Just for the record. The metal zone was in fact designed to go in the clean channel of an amp, not the fx loop even though that may sound better 90% of the time
Most correct! It catered to the combo market which often had no effects loop at all
clean way better sound
In Flames made it sound pretty good in Whoracle
Yep. Those who think it’s a preamp, just don’t know how to use pedals.
I'm not sure that's accurate for the newest one; it sounds waaaay better plugged into the fx loop!
I was so surprised when you said the sound was terrible 😂
same
inr
You can use it however the hell you like to achieve the sound you’re personally after, that’s music!
Wow Ola your hair was really short in this video! 😉👍
Jajaja jajaja
Omfg lmao
LMFAO
Who
Haha
Metal Zone into clean channel = the guitar tone of every early 90s death metal album.
Dank Cat thats the heavy metal pedal from boss.
Dank Cat m.ruclips.net/video/V3y3QoFnqZc/видео.html
Chill dudes, I was just making a joke about the crappy quality of the tone, not saying that it was the MT-2 specifically used.
Dank Cat my long lost sibling is that you? I haven't seen you since mother banished you for being the runt of the litter
And hm2 too
Actually you CAN put this in front of a clean amp and get a killer metal sound. I did it for years. Sure it helps to to run a graphic eq after it like the Boss GE7, but that is not totally necessary.
Absolutely agreed.
I need the seetimgs
I think the pedal at 1:18 sounded like really good tho?
Scratching your ears in 2:53 like enabling amp+cab sim on a processor before plugging it to an amp directly from guitar input. This pedal simply acts like a preamp.
The true magic comes when you max out the level and gain when putting it in front. You get that truly disgustingly awesome raw Swedish death metal sound that I love
Great video! You can also turn the gain completely off and use the Metal Zone as a boost/EQ in front of a high gain amp. Works well for aggressive thrash or death metal!
Then put a cs-3 before it with the attack (release) on 0
That is the only way to use it actually hahahaha
That's what I do. Way better than an OD!
I found that using this method makes a lot of bad distortions sound decent. A good cab or cab sim also helps a lot.
yeo, the cab sim is THE most important thing (giving that you are using the rest of the elements properly to the style you wish)
So why did it take 25 years for anyone to discover this?
I liked this metalzone plugged into the return
it sounds amazing to me.... and usually I add equalizer pedal after metalzone
Clean way better
The KEY to this pedal is the sweepable mid-frequency knob. It's a metal pedal with it's own parametric EQ(sorta)... and that's a very powerful tool for tone-shaping.
Try this - put everything at 12 noon and turn the mid control ALL THE WAY UP(stay with me here). Now, using the mid-frequency control, slowly work your way around the dial until you find that nasally, biting, awful tone - you will know it when you hear it. NOW, turn the mid control down, effectively cutting that offensive tone. THIS is the right way to scoop (some) mids, because you are being specific in what frequencies you are scooping, NOT just taking out a huge swath right in the middle of your guitar's tonal range, like alot of beginners tend to do. Now you can adjust the other controls to taste, but there is ALOT of gain on tap here, so try abit less than you might think you need.
Of course, there is more to tone than just this, guitar, pickups, amp, speaker, room, everything matters, but this addresses JUST the Metal Zone pedal. Hope this is helpful.
Exactly. Isn't it funny how the most hated metal pedal is popular again? I'm glad it didn't take us that long to figure it out!
Can you do a review with this setting explained?
It really depends; in my case, i really like the tone of a solid state amp, but, i mean, a high quality solid state one, and for home, i use the metal zone in front of the clean channel because it has stomping low end, a very good config for the mids to fit every style of distortion that i like (ex, i normally for home use the classical ear crushing low mids, with a frequency around 200hz for that chainsaw tone that i really like for playing on my own) and have pretty crunching high end, a thing that someone who lay all the tone of the track only on his guitar, greatly appreciate (or at least i appreciate, because, like i mentioned before, i really like the chainsaw tone of guitarrist like zakk wilde or dimebag darrel, and my lx120 and my randall rg1503 dials it pretty well with a metal zone on front)
But for my band tone, i use the metalzone paired with a mooer green mile (with the metal zone gain set around 2, and the green mile gain set to 0 with both lvls up to 10) to really boost the preamp of my amp, and have a more fuller tone, with tight low end, boosted mids and less trebble, because on that way my guitar sound heavier on the band escenario.
And guys, a error that i see a lot in metal zone users.... DONT USE THE GAIN AT MAX, IT TOTALLY RUINS YOUR TONE;-;
an error i thing not a error
I’ve got a Boss ME-80 pedalboard. I have recently (in 2019) discovered, by selecting the Metal Zone in the stomp box section and scaling back the gain amount below the halfway mark, I can achieve a sweet-sounding classic hard rock/proto metal sound in conjunction with the Boss simulation of the JC120. Not nearly as ugly as it typically is when you just push all the levels.
Actually, to my ears it sounds WAY better through the front of the amp.
Yes, I agree. It sounds great.
@@wenby5054 Agreed, pussy rock lovers like the other way around, they like fu fighters, we like suicidal tendencies and metallica etc
@@wenby5054 Sounds like poo thru the front of the amp.
@@superdavey69 You realize Cannibal Corpse was the first to do "other way around " as you say... Definitely the polar opposite of any pussy metal ! Guitar to pedal input, output to fx return. Period 🤘
shit band, sums up your comment
Dude you didn't even try. The metal zone is a badass pedal i have used it for recording and used it for live performances for over 20 years and it is the only distortion pedal i will ever use.
If you scale the game all the way back near zero or one and push the EQ settings just above noon, it almost gives you a little bit of “plexi in your pocket“. That doesn’t sound bad at all when you put it in the signal path to the clean channel.
I liked it in the clean channel sounds like old thrash muffled but still powerfull
Metal zone is the pedal used in Dissection's monumental masterpieces. Top of the line Black Metal tone
Dino (heaviest tone ever!) Cazares told me about this pedal 25 years ago and I've had 1 ever since..thankfully I always assumed it was through the effects loop..combine this with an EQ and hello crunchy scooped city! You are the man Dino! Such a nice dude!
Awesome story, I had no idea Dino used this pedal. I'm a huge Fear Factory fan, do you know if he used the metal zone on Demanufacture? I thought he got that tone from a modded Marshall JCM. I also heard he and Colin Richardson had some big disagreements over Dino's guitar tone for that album and Dino didn't want to work with him anymore, any truth to that? Did he just use the metal zone into the effects loop of his Marshall or do you know if he used any other gear that made a big difference to his tone? Demanufacture is one of my favorite albums, I'd love to hear more from you if you know how Dino got his tone back in the 90's.
I thought the first example sounded pretty awesome as well XD. Both sound great, though, great vid!
This video reminds me of the bit in 1984 where O'Brien tries to convince Winston that he is actually holding up five fingers. People keep putting the Metal Zone in the FX loop and telling us that it sounds better.
Say what?
I may be a couple of years late to the show, but I love this book. He's using George Orwell's book "1984" as a euphemism, referring to double think which is a major theme of the book. Basically, if enough people tell you a thing is a certain way, for all intensive purposes history is changed and it is that way. What he's trying to say is he thinks the Metal Zone is shit no matter how many people try to tell you it's not haha
@@Coppersteel Orson Welles?
Ummmm,,,because it DOES sound better in the loop.
@@Coppersteel George Orwell?
It’s got a versatile EQ that y’all can tweak as opposed to one knob that says Tone.
Is it me or the direct into clean channel sounds way more badass
ok, unpopular opinion but on the side by side comparison I thought the clean channel one sounded better
You can get the same sound through the front if dialed in right. I had a friend that was using it, I went over his house while he was playing, and he was complaining about not being able to make it sound good. I showed him my settings, and he was blown away.
I've been using this pedal for decades, eqs at noon, 2nd big knob at 2 o'clock, level and gain at 2 o'clock. Sounds awesome too me.
Both sound great
Yes, they do.
@@wenby5054 Clean is way better as it was intended
That's the best I've heard the MZ I never thought about using this as a pre amp. Now I need to snag one before everyone gets hip and the price goes up
The first run through sounded like Swedish metal tones and that's not bad yo!
I found both good in different ways. I would probably use the effects loop tone for a live setting to cut a little better but use the front end for recording to get the bite. Also, please tell me you still have that Crate Blue Voodoo 300? Those are so rare and beautiful.
The difference is on the return sounds muffled. Squash that. Run it through the clean channel like its supposed to be.
fantastic video, I think 99% of people use it into the amp preamp.... need to get the word out!!
thanks for the comment and view bud
This was one of my 1st pedals and I really liked it
Sounded better to me through the front. You know the knobs move from the 12 o clock position right?
The clean channel doesn't sound bad at all to me! it sounds just as good in the return.
that clean channel tone is actually fire
LOL put in the amp INPUT, like a normal pedal, and remove your amp's presence/brightness. It will sound the same. All you do when you pass it through the FX loops is skip a badly-EQued amp channel.
2:53 Clean
3:05 Return
I like clean more
@@logik4264 Right? Clean is better. Now I'm confused.
Clean is better by far! Return sounds crap
Pretty big difference, I was surprised! Would be interesting to hear how it would sound along with the amp panned different or underneath it for a stacked track to see if it would add anything interesting. Still a bit woofy or fuzzy for me but sounded way better as a pre.
Sounds better through the front. I own one as well. I prefer the sound through the front. Just change presets
The difference is huge!!!And the second sound is also huge!!!Subscribed already :D
Hey bud!! Thanks for the kind words, totally appreciate it :)
I prefer it through my clean channel - gives me that dirty tone I’ve been seeking
i like the first better, just eq some things. it uses more tubes in a tube amp. the power amp in bypasses the preamp and sounds more sterile. maybe this will work good with a tube preamp pedal.
Well, by listening to your test, in my opinion the pedal sounds way better in front of the amp... Though other videos on YT seem to prove the opposite. :(
I'll try both methods as soon as I receive mine in the mail... (I had one around 1994-1995 but I don't remember exactly how it sounded, so I reordered one). Can't wait!
I've just ordered a new one and I remember how excellent it sounds in the clean channel.
Wow great difference
Try running it in the effects loop send and return on clean channel with an eq pedal either in loop or out front
lol, since the distortion has that lame sound, I always leave it at zero
I use it as a boost/overdrive into preamp with parametric eq
pretty dope like that, overdrives the hell out of a three tube preamp
with lots of mids and treble you can get that RICH thick fuzz from the late 70s
Clean channel
it is considerably better, still personally not as pleasurable as using a tube amp. reasonable video and good ideas
It's seems like people will never get one thing about metal zone - it's not supposed to be used with high-end amps both live and in the studio. People buy MT-2 so they can have a distortion to their cheap home combo amp just to train.
BleedTheFreak not true
That's exactly why I love my Metal Zone
I stacked mine(Mt2) with an amp simulator as an (always on boost) ...and a bb pre amp plus delay ..only kicked it when i need to do solo's and it gives me a fat glorious mids! Woo! hoo! I Just use my ears to get the tone i wanna hear in a metal zone via eq..
It works best with pc speakers or hifi amp. Thats the limit of it's usefullness. With better gear anyony should avoid it.
@@krzysztofwaleska Tell that to Cannibal Corpse who used it for years, hehehe.
Tone is such a subjective thing, there’s no good or bad, just whether it suits the music you’re playing or if it suits your personal preference
U can also use it through the whole FX loop with activated Clean Channel. So you dont have to replug cables when u wanna use the amps PreAmp.
Use it to boost an already overdriven amp (gain on 40-50% depending on amp)...turn the DIST knob to around 9 o clock or less, be careful with the high, mid and mid freq knobs....give that a try, it will sound a lot better
in some amps it will sound muddy and not crisp so that is frustrating, but put a Boss Equalizer after it and there you go, that was the way we did it and if your amp had an fx loop you can experiment and use it both ways it's up to you.
pause at 3:03. Look at that little white switch right there saying "bright" its pushed in. Thats why it sounds bad, then when you pass through the FX loop you skip that. If you remove the bright, your metal zone will sound great in the input
In my humble opinion-
Pedals like the Metal Zone (I love mine) with a little compression/reverb and maybe a light double or chorus (I use a TC Plethora X5) and something like a Duncan PoweStsge power amp and a good cab make for a solid, reliable, and affordable jam session or gig setup that's a lot of fun to play through. I have a few different dirt and boost boxes I switch between depending on the session I'm going to. For my own stuff though, it's the original MT-2.
Is this the video that started it all?
Lol yeah, I remember watched this first before Ola's video
Nice video bro, greetings from Durban, that's what the original intention was for the metal zone
...I dig both tones...
the best way to use it, it 's with 0 gain on a crunch channel , a lot of great death metal records were made this way, also , the best is too mod it (keeley mod for example work great)
that does work well yeah, maybe I should compare that method as well, thanks for the idea dude
This is actually perfect for my sound. Thank you!!!
Well, the Metal Zone pedal is basically a preamp. Running a preamp into another preamp dramatically reduces the dynamic range, especially if you're using the clean channel of an amp that's not really transparent sounding. The pedal sounds just better if you use an amp more suited for cleans (Fender Twin, Roland JC 120) and avoid overloading the amp's input.
It sounded the exact same with both examples?
Best intro graphics EVER🤘
Well done. Sounds good. Too many people dismiss this pedal when they have no idea what it's for. I don't use it, but I'm not arrogant enough to say it sucks just because it's not my sound.
Thank you!
I’m getting Katana 100 Artist coming soon .. do you think this would be a good addition or you think Katana should be good enough.
Very good video.
Never seen anyone put one of these straight into the FX return before but it sounds so much better! 👍
Thanks man, really appreciate the view and comment :)
Excellent playing. I love how your guitar looks.
Wow, I never ever imagined Boss pedals can perform even without input pluged in!
*(From an extreme Metal fanatic's point of view) I actually prefer the clean channel, great playing, sounds like early Killswitch Engage,* *who is it?.*
@Phillip hanna lmfao, just when I think that I will never hear anything more dumber on youtube, someone always comes along and defies it all!
Can also be used as an overdrive. Only thing that should be avoided with this beast is the clean channel
Compared side by side I like the "wrong" tone better... something wrong is not right here
The MT2 is an accidental preamp of the 90's. When plugged in, boosted, dialed and used correctly, it can goe toe to toe with some modern preamps of today.
what about crunch channel?
Ok Poindexter,, Run it through the effects loop, or if not an option, then use as a clean boost.
try using the Metal Zone with the gain dialed down to below 9 o'clock and the volume way to boost an already quite crunchy amp... Use the powerful EQ to shape the sound to your preference. And if you want to really step up the game, apply the "Diezel mod" to your pedal.
I prefer the first one for some reason. You can almost feel the chugs. However I wonder how ass it would be to mix with vocals
Tank you i do it and you right. In return was the best soud 👍
It's just that most of people don't know how to use it... And they will judge the pedal according to their inability to dial a good tone.
inability to dial a good tone, exactly right. I got a similar yet much heavier tone to those on this vid just by running my metal zone into the clean channel on the front of a 10 watt Behringer practice amp of all things.
Definitely, i was watching a lot of videos about distortion and one day i saw a distortion pedal that i have with a horrible tone, so a lot of people think "Oh this pedal sucks" but honestly the owners of the product sucks because they don't know how to setup a good tone and the pedal get bad reputation.
Tip:
"try it on front of a bass amp it sounds so good"
Not even a HUGE metal fan but really enjoyed the video [and learnt something new too!] Subbed and looking forward to your content ◇
Thanks :) I will also check out your channel, good to see more SA peeps here
fx loop is just skipping ahead. You can get same, just have to dial it in when going to input.
im confused where do u plug in ur guitar if the pedal is in the return?
What about using 2 metal zones, in clean chanel and in a loop?
Does a video on metalzone, still doesn’t understand metalzone.
I had these last 2006, i bought it again yesterday to test as pre amp. Havent tested yet but i test the uber metal so far, im excited to use this as a pre amp to tube amps. I expected more than the uber metal
Good pedal actually. Had one.
I don't understand. So how do I make it sound good? Not into an amp with a clean tone.
Mt2 must be use incorporate with booster pedal put after mt2. If you have over drive pedal try to emulate booster pedal characteristics as best as possible.this will eliminate the" too metal element" in mt2 and turn into what I call the acceptable beast.if you don't have both set the mid and mid freq close together slightly after 12.trust me you'll not disappointed.still yup in front of clean channel.
What pickup is that dude?
I sometimes put this in front of a vox ac30hw2. Not a shit amp at all. It sounds great :)
Kirk Windstein gets a delightfully heavy tone out of it. Its not impossible you just have to be conservative and watch those highs! It can turn into a fizzy beast on even a touch of the dial
Everybody shXts on the Metal Zone but it’s probably the best pedal I’ve ever owned.
