    For anyone wondering why focal length distortion is a myth... It's because it has to do with the relative distance of the subject to the sensor. When your subject is far away the difference between the distance to the sensor and the nose/ears is much less in relation to the total distance of the whole subject to the sensor.

    You are 100% correct about the focal length itself not causing the distortion you speak of. Speaking of wide focal lengths, I've never enjoyed the effect when stabilizing a clip shot with a wide lens. Way too much weird distortion. When the lens barely even pans, tilts, or moves in any way it changes the perspective drastically, it looks super weird and warpy when stabilized. A longer focal length lets Motion or FCP or whatever just slide the image around without distortion since the edges of the picture don't have as much pronounced perspective.

    • @lebavu8260
      @lebavu8260 2 года назад

      Unless u were going for that vibe lol but agreed good point. I wonder if trying “track region” in motion and defining a much smaller region of the image would help the weird distortion on wide lens as u described about. I might run some tests on that in motion out of curiosity but wonder if u had already tried that and can share your results.

    @Mark Spencer Is it possible tu use tracking with 360 footage, which is outputted after stitching with Insta or GoPro software? Motion is capable of importing and showing this material, but as soon as i add a camera and for this camera a track motion behavior, motion is not connected to the video, the box in the preview tab of the motion behavior is just empty, and therefore no selection panel appears for which you could choose the section of the current video position to start tracking with. 360 footage is just perfect for tracking, as you do not have to worry about where the object to track moves or how near or far it is, but this seems not to be supported by motion :(.

    Great video 👍. So if focal length doesn’t affect the distortion of an object, what does it affect? Just Field of view? If you had a flatter face and wanted to make the features stick out a bit more, you could just move closer to the camera, would you choose the focal length for framing purposes?

    Sorry but I think my comment was cancelled, so I ask again: do you think it's possible in Motion or FCPX to compare two skiers (or two runners, or two golf players, etc), during a race, to have a "ghost" and see when one goes faster than the other? Thank you!

    • @markspencer3104
      @markspencer3104 2 года назад

      The simple way would be to overlay the clips on top of each other and adjust opacity and perhaps the blend mode to show both of them - but this would also show both backgrounds. The more difficult approach would be to rotoscope one of the people. This could be done in FCP or Motion but is tedious and time-consuming as it involves key framing a mask with many control points (or multiple masks) frame by frame.

    • @helmutnn
      @helmutnn 2 года назад

      Thank you for the answer, this is an honor. In fact i bought Motion because of your video today, it is the latest version. It turned out that the object (a person riding a horse) could not be found by the tracking system. The material was filmed with a 360 degree camera (Insta 360 X2) and the quality is not good enough for tracking. But the Insta360 software can track and follow the horse, so it seems their algorithms are a bit more suited for this kind of material. With other films i was able to follow your tutorial up to the point where i tried to add smoothing to the Z scaling, which led to a crash of motion. But i will not give up, your tutorial was very motivating :).
