Chert Glades & The Species That Love Them

- On a chert Glade in Joplin Missouri we check out an rare species of blazing star, Liatris hirsuta, along with an extremely cold tolerant prickly pear and a very cool succulent species (Phemeranthus calycinus) in the Bitterroot family, Montiaceae.
We also talk about how Chert forms, why it might be occurring here on Carboniferous-age (340 million year old) limestone and how it affects the plant life.

Joey, thanks for the Ozark love. We got some cool ass glades and woodlands down here in Arkansas, too. And we do have a native plant society. It's a good time down here I think we get overlooked! Pretty funny seeing you go gaga for L. hirsuta cause it feels so common to me but that's just how it goes I guess. And yeah kids in skinny jeans are still drinking in the creeks
20:05 The cliff-dwelling brassicacea is Lepidium densiflorum or virginicum. It does well in sidewalk cracks as you might expect. Tastes like very spicy honey mustard.

I come across Liatris compacta (ouachita blazing star) all the time hiking around Hot Springs, AR. Real nice.

If you ever pass through St. Louis, MO, check out Victoria Glade in Jefferson County. The most noteworthy plant is Fremont's leather flower, Clematis fremontii. I love that place and try to visit at least once a year. Glades are so cool!

Thanks for that Liatris hirsuta ID. I've only seen Liatris flowers in tight spikes in Texas. If I tried to identify this Liatris hirsuta in the field, that thistle-like floral branching would've tripped me up in trying to identify it.
My wife and I were just exploring that same glade in Joplin less than 24 hours ago! Those Phemeranthus calycinus (fame flowers) are some of my favorite Midwest succulents, and I hope to cultivate them in the rock gardens I maintain at our local zoo soon! Thank you for creating content like this - It brings me hope to see someone sharing information about our local geology, plants, and related topics with the rest of the world!
I'm from the KC region and Ruellia humilis is one of my favorite native plants in my garden. It thrives on neglect and doesn't care if it gets mowed or the soil is dry as a bone.
Tony needs to check out the cedar glades in middle TN. Amazing diversity in a geographically small area.

I've had some pretty incredulous reactions when I tell folks we have two native species of Opuntia in Minnesota (O. macrorhiza and O. fragilis). I've tried to replicate conditions to grow them on our property, but they are never happy!

I love this glade! very special place. I visit it when I can, and there's always different species going off and I always find something I've never seen. Really cool that you could stop by this place that I know and love so well!

The silica structure of the Radiolarians is crazy looking. It's very alien in construction but also crazy that microscopic life is creating armored structures.
here where I am in South Africa we have a very similar plant Selaginella dregei. In fact I have it growing up on my roof top garden.
The large biface in my picture was made from a piece of chert collected from the joplin area. There are some wild cherts there.

To "fix" led billboards, find a strong alkali gel. Domestos is a brand that has one here in Oz. You need to lay it on its side, and carefully slit the length of it, then "reseal" with some cling wrap and scotch tape. It needs to only just hold together. Turn it 120 degrees and repeat. and again.
If you catapult this onto the sign, it will rupture, and the NaOH will cloud the glass screen, making it very low resolution.
There are other applications of science that would help, but sadly I would attract the wrong types of attention if I mentioned them.
Joey, I hope you had the opportunity to check out some of the igneous glades of the St. Francois Mountains while you were driving through. Some of the coolest plant communities and views (for Missouri) are found in that area of the state. Also some of the oldest mountains in the world - and they look like it! The old knobs!! I haven't been able to explore the area as much as I'd like but I'd recommend Taum Sauk Mountain State Park for a pretty good example of some of the stuff to see down there.

The chert is easy to dig through compared to that limestone! Hey man if you want to see some biodiversity, go to ha ha Tonka at the height of the spring bloom. I saw so many different species of wildflowers blooming over by the natural bridge. I also saw a Clinopodium glabellum growing out from a rock in between two waterfalls!

Ambrosia artemisiifolia is definitely becoming invasive in some parts of Europe now, although it's still mostly limited to arable field margins in most places. I've seen it forming large stands on thin limestone soils in southern France, similar to the habitat in this video.
The moss before the Selaginella is probably Polytrichum btw :)

Back in the 90's I'd volunteer with the local Sierra Club chapter in MO to do glade restoration. I loved doing it, but I'd get the worst headaches from the burning. Had to stop.
