  • Living off grid has always seemed a bit daunting to us - that is, until now! We’ve spent the past four months learning how to live and work completely off grid, and we think we have mastered the set up needed to make our off grid living comfortable and stress free. This set up works EVERYWHERE and has totally saved us on multiple occasions. We’ve used it to stay connected while posting up on BLM land, camping at dispersed campsites, and it’s even saved us a few times while staying in actual rentals in the middle of nowhere with terrible WiFi. Not to mention, this off grid life is saving us thousands of dollars a month. And you know where that is going - straight into our investments so we can continue to work towards financial independence and early retirement.

    Thanks for the shout out! That was awesome and totally unexpected. For that, if you head Florida way, we have comfy place you can sleep. And yes we survived Milton, but we have some repairs to do. You are awesome, thanks for sharing and we've become bigger fans of Starlink, especially after our trip to Redoubt Mountain Lodge in Lake Clark this summer...it was amazing. Stay safe, can't wait for the next adventure.

    Very cool! We used to do a lot of off grid stuff. I have two recommendations. Get a portable jump starter and a small battery block. Put them in the glove compartment, check on them sometimes to make sure they remain charged, but otherwise forget about them. Equipment fails - your jackery plug, a microchip, connections, anything - and having a way to jump your car or juice your phones while you reach civilization is a must.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 дня назад +2

      These are great suggestions! And it reminded me of something we should have added in the video -- the Jackery solar panel has its own direct plug-in too for phones, etc, so even if we accidentally dropped the Jackery off a cliff or something we could still at least charge stuff direct off the solar. ❤️

    This is great stuff!! So many people would not want to do all the planning and logistics to do what you've done, so bravo for that! And what a great use of technology with the jackery and starlink! CO is definitely out of control with hotel/airbnb prices so anything you can do to make things reasonable is awesome! There are so many ways to live differently which gives you freedom and it's great that you are showing this to all your subs! Keep up the great adventure!

      Thanks Dan! Yes it really is amazing how easy it is now to be nomadic with the Jackery-Starlink combo. I have literally had a client call me for an emergency session while we were driving in the middle of nowhere, pulled over and had a Skype session going with them in less than 5 minutes. CA and CO have both gotten really pricey for accommodations, but they're our two favorite places to adventure so we had no choice but to get creative, and that's honestly made it even more fun! --A

      Nick I am so glad you are with me on Love is Blind, and that's a great question! We seriously considered getting a Sprinter type of setup from the start, but when we worked out the numbers (including gas with all the miles we drive) we thought it would actually be better to get the Subaru and do mostly Airbnbs and housesitting. But then we started having so much fun and adventure every time we stay off grid that now we're once again seriously considering doing a bigger off-road capable van rig! Of course you guys will be the first to know if and when we make the change!! ❤️ --E

    This video was so interesting! Glad to see you guys are enjoying your nomad lives. As a travel nurse, I’m not quite in a situation where I’m interested in living off-grid full time, but for months at a time, this video gave me plenty of ideas.
    Quick questions if you get a chance to reply: how do you typically manage showering/bathing?
    Does starlink still work well when it’s overcast? (I know it’s supposed to, but wondered about your experience)

    • @betsyclarke185

      Also curious about bathing!

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 дня назад +1

      These are great questions, Colby. For bathing, as you know we really prefer lakes and waterfalls so whenever possible we camp near a natural body of water. We have actually come to prefer that to a regular shower! But when there is no natural water, we usually just go without showering (drinking water in the car is too precious to use for bathing) and then shower at the gym whenever we come into town to work out, which is pretty often. So far the Starlink has been perfect even when it's overcast. Will definitely update you though if we have any problems with it once we get into rainy season, etc! ❤️

    This is an interesting video. Thanks for sharing. I liked your solar and power solutions. My wife and I lived off grid for a summer when we first got married and it taught us a lot. One thing that I was curious about was your water setup. When I am gone for a week, I take our old Ford E350 with two 7 gallon water jugs and cots inside. In the summer, a daily shower is no problem because it is hot enough to heat the water. In colder months, a Coleman two burner grill works great as a water heater. Interested to see more of how you are roughing it!

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 дня назад

      Thanks Jared! We will definitely do further videos on these issues, and the water question is a good one. We use natural bodies of water to bathe or just skip it for a couple days if natural water isn't available. We haven't yet stayed anywhere for more than a weekend that doesn't have natural water to bathe in, but if we do we'll def need to follow your plan and bring extra bathing water because 3 days would be too long! ❤️

    Costs involved in maintaining a house these days, especially the ever growing single market !
    Seeing more & more embracing the "van life"

    Good for you two if caught up in a biblical storm's path, just load up & get out of "Dodge"

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 дня назад +1

      John we've been thinking exactly the same thing! We get the heck out of Dodge even when some rainy weather rolls in because we don't want to waste a single weekend without at least one awesome adventure! And of course if there was a major disaster that took down all the electricity like what just happened in North Carolina, it wouldn't affect us at all. We are totally independent of the electrical grid and also the water supply with all our excellent filters. If there is a big disaster in one of the states we're in or close to, we've already talked about taking our Jackery-Starlink setup there in order to help everyone who's cut off communicate with their loved ones! ❤️

      Yes we thought about it very seriously before we started out on the nomad journey! But when we figured out how many miles we'd be driving, and worked out the gas cost and price differential in the vehicles, it seemed like getting lodging occasionally was actually the cheaper option! I love the Subaru setup. It's nice and simple, and you still get good mileage. If you want to keep doing this long-term, you might want to look into a truck camper like Bound for Nowhere. Personally, I think their truck setup is fantastic and would fit your style of adventure more than a sprinter van.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 дня назад

      That is great advice, and we are right there with you. The Subaru is an amazing car for putting in a ton of road miles and also great for a few nights at a time off grid, but then it's also super nice to come have a bathroom and comfy bed when we're housesitting, etc. If we really decide to go full time off grid we will definitely want a bigger and more comfortable rig. ❤️

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 дня назад +2

      Lorina these are great questions!! Yes we have a 24-hour Fitness membership with buddy pass, and we go there all the time for workouts, showers, etc. It is amazing, by the way, how nice the 24-hour fitnesses in Colorado are! And yes we do have bear spray for when we go up north into grizzly territory. We're not too worried about black bears, because we've encountered plenty of them over the years and they're pretty harmless, but grizzlies are a whole other story. The bathroom system really depends on where we're staying. A lot of times there is a trailhead bathroom close by which is great, but sometimes it's either a WAG bag or dig down 6-12 inches. That aspect would definitely be the allure of a bigger rig with a black-water tank! ❤️

    You guys have such an amazing Setup! If I had one recommendation for you, it would be potentially upgrading your Yeti cooler to a 12v dc electric cooler like the Iceco go20 cooler. It can save you guys from having to do ice runs and expand your options for food like ice cream. It can run right off of your Jackery Explorer 1000v2 power station and run for days. I just got one and I highly recommend it! :)

I went with two side by side Thule XT Sport (smaller) roof top boxes which pack a ton and have room to attach a side awning. I will say that purchasing inexpensive window nets, usb portable fans, and a set of WeatherTech shades helps tremendously. Walmart sells a black folding table that slides
    form fitting under the single mattress from hatch to crack line of back seat… this levels out when placing back seats down. Don’t forget to reverse the back headrests to prop mattress! Lol. Tricks of the trade, So proud of you two! How often do you sprinkle in a hotel / airbnb stay per month? I’m still in Charleston SC, fully retired but still have my pet and housesitting service. Thinking of selling my condo for good and doing the car camping full time. I’d love to know your thoughts on pros and cons. Hope to see you on the trails one day! Brian

    Thanks for the Jakery info. I'm looking for one when the house power is out. Will it run a refrigerator?
    I so totally could not do what you're doing. We have a Victorian in Alameda (come visit) and I really like growing tomatoes in our backyard. Not to mention the dog really likes her pricy digs. She'll travel with us to hotels and family houses, but while we like camping she tends to hear and bark at ghosts so she is not a great candidate for the great outdoors.

      Ellen the Jackery would be perfect for when the power goes out, and yes it will run the refrigerator -- though not constantly all day. A big fridge will pull about 500 watts or so, which would drain the battery in about three hours if you have the solar running. However, by not opening the door too much and turning it on for an hour or two every four hours you could keep stuff cold almost indefinitely, and of course keep all your other electronics charged as well. ❤️

    Maybe consider???? A strong box (lockable, and with sturdy handles to draw a chain thru it and lock it to the bottom of a seat). Several years ago; several vehicles (including my friends) at the "horseshoe" pull off parking spot at the Salmon Falls trailhead (south of Big Sur on PC) was broken into. Unfortunately, I had an $800 flash unit stolen. To make matters worse; my friend didn't file a claim; so I was out a flash unit. And (sort of funny); to make it really bad, we got to Big Sur St Park...my friend decided not to gas up, and to do it in the morning before heading up to Carmel to find a place to fix his smashed drivers window. Well, the evening went well...had a camp dinner and a couple beers b4 getting into our tents under the redwoods. At 1 in the morning, my tent zipper comes down, and a flashlight in my face, and my friend saying "We gotta bug out of here Troy". Long story short, after 45 min of trying to convince him everything was fine (he was having some type of psychotic attack); we packed his vehicle up (a Scion SUV) and pulled out of Big Sur heading north. Well, his scion had about 1/8th of a tank of gas, and the station (west side of PCH from park entrance) at 230am was closed and didn't have an auto pay at the pump. So, we are driving up PCH to Carmel; middle of July...LA the day prior was in an extreme heat wave. As you know, PCH gets cold at night; and the temp was below 40. We both had brought jackets and knit hats. The moon was full, and the fog was intermittent along the cliffs...so taht was neat...other than we were pretty cold (smashed out window... heat on max didn't help). Thankfully, we got to Carmel without running out of gas, and the 1st station was closed; but was still able to pay and pump. Still very cold, as we made our way over to the central valley, down the 101...as the sun rose, still cold...made or way over to the 5...by time we got to Pasadena, it was no longer cold; it was well in the 90's and I was so pissed that I had taken a week from work, to be ruined by his extreme claustrophobia, that I refused to stop ( get jackets off and get into shorts...we are both big guys, and changing on the drive is not possible in his little SUV). Oh...I had the driving duty, because he was still a freaked out. Anyhow, finally got changed out...but now it's back to really hot. We did hit a huge summer rainstorm coming back across to (to Phoenix), that helped cool things down some. That night, went to my brother in laws house...he said "I thought you and Jack were out camping for 5 days"...before I said anything, he said,, (Oh no, don't tell me...he started freaking out in his tent". Turns out he did the same thing on a deep sea trip out of San Diego... but on that trip; he had to deal with it for a few days. Anyhow...a strong box....I keep valuables in it and chain it to tie down points in the 4Runner.

    You guys should think about getting a Renogy or Victron DC to DC charger to supplement your solar power. These devices will charge your Jackery at over 200 watts/hr. as you drive. All the.famousclimbers from Jon Krakauer and,Alex Honnold to Fred Becky are/were proud of their bumness. (Tip : find bars with happy hour buffets for a cheap supper) As we move into winter, the car will probably be better than the tent for sleeping. I’m jealous of your Jackery setup. All the hippest RUclipsrs run Jackery’s (Slim Potatohead, Wonderhussy, etc) When I’m close to pulling the trigger I’ll probably browse Bluetti , etc just to just compare price points. Finally, for Netflix, may I suggest a couple stories in the excellent “Love, Death and Robots” series - ‘Lucky 13’ ‘Aquila Rift’ ‘ ‘Mason’s Rats’ ‘Life Hutch’ -a cgi rendering of the short story by the late Harlan Ellison.

But of course at some point we'll probably also just find a nice modest house, most likely somewhere in the Bishop/Mammoth or Tahoe area to use as a home base. Way thumbs up on this video. Maybe one of the best yet (and I did watch the first one when you were just building the bed in the car). I lived a year and a half outta my car after my roommate got us evicted and it wore me down...but it was all city living in the car. This actually looks really fun. And to be able to travel wherever you want on any given day is really sweet. I didn't know anything about this Jackery thing and thought Starlink was just some satellites that Elon Musk shot into orbit over Ukraine. So, I am going to check out the Jackery with solar and a Starlink connection if I can link it on your page. I'm not a prepper or off-gridder but I think everyone should be prepared right now for any kind of emergencies that could drive them off-grid. I'm still working on a good "bug out bag" but this brings up a whole lot more questions. The only thing I might be worried about is if we were hit with an EMP or a extremely strong CMI, the electromagnetics could knock out whatever power sources you have ...mainly your car. There are companies that build devices that can block this out so your car will still drive though. Maybe worth investigating....although some people say these devices are hoooeey. And I got a gut laugh when one second, Adam is eating a big ass burrito and then in the Yeti he has boxes of grape nuts. LMFAO

    You’re going to get tired of the small car thing. You should look into a van. Sprinters are nice, but very expensive. But…it may be worth it, because they are tall, to give you a lot of room, and I believe (i could be wrong though) they hold their value pretty well. Look at getting a used one.
    You can put a bank of 8 batteries in it…get a little Honda inverter generator, maybe solar panels on top next to Starlink.
    But I don’t need to tell you guys how to live. I’ve seen your videos. I’d say you are living pretty well. 👍

      This is great advice, and of course you are right that if we keep doing mostly or totally off grid we will need to go way up in size. For now we're sticking with the Subaru because we also have a couple of monthly airbnb rentals in awesome places coming up over the next few months and we want to see how we like that vibe of staying in one place for a month before moving on. But definitely if we decide to go full time off grid we will need a bigger rig, and the Sprinter might well be the way to go since Adam is so tall.They are super expensive, but we're saving a lot this year so that will definitely help! ❤️

      @@LiveHardxLoveHard I have a lot of experience in this type of living…from living in the back of a pickup truck to a van similar in size to a Sprinter, to a big box truck I converted into an RV.
      It’s a balance. Every time you go up in size, you are sacrificing mobility. An RV is nice for the comfort, but horrible when you just want to take a short trip into town to get supplies. The parking…the driving, fuel mileage, its a hinderance.
      The Subaru is nice because it’s small, but you don’t have the space.
      The Sprinter is a great happy medium. Pretty easy mobility and comfort.
      Also…with a Sprinter/van, you can haul bicycles for little town trips or whatever.
      I love your channel and this new thing you’re doing will open up a lot of other possibilities for other types of videos. There are many “I live in a van down by the river” channels, but most are girls just making videos of themselves waking up in a parking lot wearing little panties and teasing their male subscribers with a fantasy.
      One more thing, some feedback: the first video I ever saw from you two…the thing that stuck out the most was the quality of the picture. 4k or whatever they call that idk I’m a musician not a videographer, but I was totally amazed at how clear and vivid the picture quality was, and combined with the obvious beautiful locations, was what initially grabbed me and made me want to see more.
      Point is, I think you should keep up on the latest and greatest tech in video recorders or whatever you use. It blew my mind, and made me feel Iike I was almost standing on the mountain, too!

      Watts per hour makes sense and it's intuitive. How else would you convey 180 watts per hour? I just don't think 180Wh would make sense for describing is charge rate--instead that would mean the battery would drain in 1 hour at 180W. I use the same W/h terminology in my head with my system, it's intuitive. I don't see why it's not a legit unit? Maybe you mean it's not commonly included in labelling?

      @@mountains1233the watt unit already expresses energy per unit time. One watt is equivalent to one joule of energy per second. That’s what I meant in my original comment where I said watts already have a time component in them. So if you want to mention the time unit, instead of saying 180 watts is the power output of the solar panels, say 180 joules per second is the power output of the solar panels. Does that make it easier for you to understand?

    Yeah, in between selling my old place and buying the place I'm in now I lived homeless in my expedition for 3 months and I completely outfitted it for boon docking. And then because I live so far out of town many times when I travel to town I camp out of the truck because this whole area is a camping culture area with a million and one things to do and all the stuff that I buy for camping works for my truck and my house and then another thing that people do out here is they go canoeing far into the middle of nowhere with great fishing and pristine lakes with campsites on lakes and a network of portages to all the different lakes all made by the Indians that lived here before us! I got a yeti cooler like that and I was upset with it. The better option would be the cubed box with the rollers with extendable handle mostly because you never really need to cool that much and it's a deeper cooler so every thing just fits better in there with the ice and you don't have to worry about organizing it all the time and making sure everything goes back then way it came when everything wants to shift and ice falls down. Its just better so I'm trying to sell mine right now. And then if you want real refrigeration for the car then get a medium sized dometic fridge cooler! Don't get the big one with two bins just get the biggest one beneath that one with one lid and one bin. I just spent a lot of money today on an Amazon order for two crucial items that are the best leading items for camping today. I'll tell you about them if you want. I have a million camping items for every situation and all I do is review products. I'm basically a pro at this stuff now. I know all the brands and all the products out there and all the shortcuts and work arounds and which ones are the best or worst so if you ever want to know without researching like crazy or buying the wrong item then I could let you know what's going on! Lol. Get the inside scoop if you know what I mean!

      Steve this is great information! Thanks so much, and we will definitely ask you when we have product questions! • @steveklick
      @steveklick 2 дня назад

      @LiveHardxLoveHard Yes, Yeti's are very nice. A van set up would be great. That is what I'm thinking of upgrading too as the truck is still just a little too compact and also I am a giant human and for you guys there are two of you so space becomes crucial I also bring two dogs with me, used to be three. Yeah I talk to people all the time that are canoeing way out in the middle of nowhere. It becomes an art form at that level because weight and practicality really come into the picture. Because you are so exposed with paddling and such and all that has to be done in a good and right way and for portaging you have to pack everything just right otherwise your making multiple trips back and forth with extra weight on rocky mountainous trails and leaving gear behind and such to go back and pick it up later. Luckily we have basically a zero theft culture up here and everyone who comes up here knows and understands plus if you get caught by the rangers messing with people like that the penalties are much higher. I just bought a leading hot tent by Russian bear, the up series, and I just bought a titanium folding stove with a nesting stack. Its like the best you can buy. Glad your jackery is working for you and is charging well. Look into "amorphous" solar panels! They charge in low light and shade and they make them in nice folding blankets that you can sprawl over the front of your car and they fold up into a little square!
