  • This video is the second of a series of at least 4 videos that will come out on my channel, about my whole process when setting language study goals!
STEP 1 of the process was examining my current language skills and my overall language level, which I did in this video:
My Actual Japanese Level // How I Set Language Study Goals #1 ✨
    • My Actual Japanese Lev...
Today's video focuses on STEP 2 of the process, which is to formulate language study goals, using 8 key elements to determine what is important to me in my language learning ✨
In this video, I therefore shared what are for me the 8 most important elements of language learning (especially for self-study) and I have created a working sheet for you guys, which you can freely download on my website here: www.ari-no-yume.com/post/8-ke... 🙌🏻
Don't forget to share your goals in the comment section and to also check out what the other viewers have shared to get inspiration!

Great video as always! I'm so excited for the next video and more from you in the future :)
I just learned about transcribing audio in your TL by trying to copy what you hear word for word (from a podcast, video, etc.) and going back and highlighting the words you missed by looking at a transcript. I've been wanting to test my listening skills, and I think this has been perfect for me.
Good luck with your goals! ❤

Thank you for this video! You are so helpful and thorough. I love that you emphasize that LL is a moving target and very personal. For some reason that has never occurred to me (I am such a rule lover 😅). I have autism and even in my native languages speaking has always been a struggle. I make scripts for scenarios that I can mix and match given a situation. It was such a stupid realization that forcing myself to be more flexible (?) in a baby language than my native ones was detrimental to my motivation. I have started doing my same flexible coping speaking scripts for Japanese and Mandarin that I do for Spanish and English and magically I can speak! Knowing yourself when it comes to learning is such a bizarrely hard lesson to learn 😂

Great video and I love your accent!
You can use SMART framework for language learning but for more specific goals. You can use the 8 key elements for the long-term goals (to be fluent in the target language) and pair it with the SMART framework for the short-term or time-bound goals (specific tasks that need to be done to be fluent in the target language).
I used the examples you provided and turned it into a SMART goals:
The goal: Speak more comfortably in Korean at work
S: (what are you trying to achieve? what steps/tasks should you take?) I want to improve my Korean speaking skills for work by speaking Korean to my coworkers.
M: (this is the data you will use to check back on, either after the deadline or at the end of every week/month/quarter, for comparison to see if there's any improvement or progress, if you're on track or on schedule or if the goal has already been achieved so make sure the data you choose to keep track of can help you see the difference between the before and the after) I'll talk only in Korean to my coworkers for at least 30 minutes everyday. I'll use a habit tracker to keep track of the days I've completed the task and I'll keep a journal to take notes on which part(s) of the conversation or which topic(s) I had a hard time expressing myself with in Korean.
A: (do you have everything you need to achieve this goal like time, resources, tools, etc.?) This goal is attainable because I have coworkers who are native Korean speakers who I can talk to during work/during breaks/after work.
R: (why do this? how is this gonna help? what will you get from doing this? what's your purpose? how will this solve your problem?) By doing so, I'll be able to learn more words and phrases commonly used in our workplace and be able to use them naturally and with more confidence during conversations. I want to be an efficient member of the team and I'd like to be able to pitch in my ideas and express my opinions clearly to avoid misunderstandings due to language barriers.
T: (when do you start? how long do you plan on doing this? when's the deadline? how long do you think it will take to see results?) I will start tomorrow and in 3 months, I hope to see some progress. (check your data to see if you've made progress such as: I no longer have difficulty expressing myself in the topics that I used to struggle on or I can now hold conversations for more than 30 minutes a day without much difficulties and if there's still some parts/topics that I have difficulties with, I can repeat this but I'll know which topics/parts to focus on then I can check again after 3 months if I've made progress.)
SMART Goal: Improve my Korean speaking skills for work within 3 months by speaking Korean to my coworkers for at least 30 minutes everyday so that I can learn more words and phrases commonly used at work and be able to use them naturally and with more confidence during conversations because I want to be an efficient member of the team and to avoid misunderstandings due to language barriers.
    Another example:
"Reach A2 level by studying 1 chapter a week from [title of textbook] and reading 1 story a week from [short story book] because I want to be able to write my diary entries in [target language] and listen to/read [target language] podcasts/books aimed for beginners after 6 months."
Hope it helps and continue making informative and helpful videos like this! ^^

Thank you for your very detailed answer!! Indeed, like I said it does work in specific cases, but you need a lot of information to go on: in your case, how long can you reasonably expect to speak to your colleagues everyday for example.
The questions you added are very helpful, I think everyone can greatly benefit from them including me so thank you for sharing! 🥰
Thank you for your support, I will definitely continue 🫰🏻

That was exactly my idea with this video: to give a more flexible approach to goal-setting, so that it does not seem as scary as other methods can sometimes be! Thank you so much for watching and commenting, I appreciate it!

I loved this video! Very helpful. A small thing, but could you reduce the popping sound in relation to your voice? I found it a bit of a bother but had to have it quite loud to hear you properly.

Thank you so much for sharing. I love the way you explained 8 key elements. I need to seriously relook at my study methods and how to set the right timeframe as well as the resources in order to pass my Japanese exam. Hopefully I will make some progress there after. Thanks Ally! 🥰
