Suffice to say a lot of money has been spent since as it was all a bit austere back then in the form of large hedges and grotty tennis courts. The school and the teachers however will be with me till i'm no more as all i remember is happiness there.
Just discovered your videos on RUclips which I thoroughly enjoyed. My great, great grandfather George Chrutchfield was the head gardener at Reigate Castle in the late 1800s. He emigrated to South Africa with his daughter after his wife died, hence my South African heritage.
Wonderful area....in Austria the flower is called " key for heaven" or Heavens key" I wish we have such Primary Schools here in Austria. Such an amazing building. Best wishes for you and your family....Michaela
I have enjoyed the Reigate area films, thankyou. my husband is from Reigate and I am from Redhill, his grandad was caretaker of the Priory and lived where the bars on the windows were(which he put in for grand children's safety!). Old pictures of Redhill show a lovely Market Town which I grew up in, sadly since the 70's restructure of demolition and build it has been Unloved, that is how I view it now.
Splendid collection of ducks...we used to keep a couple - great for the eggs, (which are marvellous), but buggers to catch and put away at night though... and though they rid the garden of slugs and snails, they do tend to, (eventually), turn your lawn into the Somme!
Just found these videos of Reigate and as I lived there from 1950 to 1976 and Brockham until 1982, and not revisited much since the mid 1990s the changes that I could see were subtle and in keeping. The public areas appeared to be well maintained and good to see the Priory was continuing to be used as a school, at that time, though I understand it will transfer to a new site in the future.The avenue of trees replaced a similar avenue of mature Lombardy Poplars, which after the 1987 and 1990 gales lost a number of trees and subsequently it was found others were diseased. They were all removed in a somewhat untidy fashion with 'Elf & Safety' being the driving force. For some time there was no replanting so I am pleased to see trees returning.
We went to reigate park there was a mad dog running loose with young children around reported to council and they said there was a warden there but he doesn’t work on weekends when do people go to parks you guessed it oo we did laugh and still are
The dog graves were not rediscovered people have known about them for years. After the Great Sale of Reigate in 1921 the Priory was bought by Early Beatty (Admiral Beatty) and his family and I believe some of their dogs are also buried here (they were great dog lovers and also horsemen). The ha ha is in fact considerably taller than it appears, much of the wall is now underground as the council decided not to have too much of a drop when they restored the parkland in 2007/8 to avoid accidents. The path you are walking along is not actually Monks' Walk, this in to the right of you behind the hedge. The trees along the path to the lake (made up of several fish ponds) are not only 10 years old, some of them were maneuvered from other parts of the park using a very impressive scooping system which was quite a sight to behold. All this is covered in detail in the DVD "Reigate Priory Another Chapter", which is about the restoration of the parkland and the historical research on which the Council based their decisions.
Thank-you- very nicely narrated and filmed. But theres much more to Priory Park that you didn't film- you didn't go more than a third round the lake- to the interesting wooded part, nor up into the woods, nor up to the top greensand ridge and longish walk along the top with wonderful views nor the long path from the (disused) gate opposite Parkgate Rd down to Park Lane East along which I was taken to primary school in Crescent Rd from our house at 113 Bell Street in the early 1970s.
@@RichardVobes yes I had a great time there did a lot of outdoor things when I was there. inside is lovely everyone who worked there where fantastic I miss those days I took where I was learning for granted. we did a sports day in the park and whet on walks around it too. it was when I there learning about the world and the animals that live here when I know what I wanted to be and next year I'm moving to South Africa to work as a big cat conservationist which I'm looking forward to and it's thanks to the priory and the schools that followed and college that I am off about to go and do the job of my dreams. we had so much fun and did some amazing things like when I was in year 6 we went skiing for a week. I can't remember what year I was in but we went to the movies and another time we went to go to a recording to ant and dec in the bungalow
