- Phil Donahue, Serena Dank infamous "Parents of Punkers" organizer, and a mom who looks like something out of an Aline Crumb comic, along with several punks, duke it out to find out who and/or what is punk after all. From my beta collection, early 80's. Part 2 of 4

I love this mentality some of the adults have, the "I-fed-my-teenager-this-and-watered-them,-but-it- isn't-working,-what-phone-number-do-I-call?" mentality
It seems that the people others call "ugly" on the outside are the prettiest inside. The "punk" girls on stage are so articulate, intelligent & their personalities exude beauty. Although I always found the "punk" look very attractive as I was one myself. As a 41-year old Mom of two boys, I teach my children that it's what's inside of a person that truly matters.
And isn't it funny that the way these kids look, is normal now? we paved the way..
wow ! this takes me back . I remember the look on my moms face , when at sixteen I came home with a mohawk lol ! I dont know if it was the mohawk or the fact that I'd been gone for three days and hadnt called home , but suddenly mom was talking about family therapy and that maybe I needed a pychiatrist , that she thought there was something wrong with me . but my dad just laughed , he said he's sixteen , thats what they do , they go wild , its his time mom , let him live it . I miss my dad .
I went to college with some punkers. They were nicer to people than a lot of the snobs that made fun of them.
5:25 the guy in retail who let his employee go regarding a punk hairstyle. I had red hair with a big blond streak down the middle and my boss told me "Get rid of the hair or I'll get rid of you." Worked for a lawyer, 1984. LOL
al from ministry = fucking awesome.
this whole thing makes me giggle. reminds me of high school in my classes when as a class we would discuss individualism and stuff and I could tell when a teacher was inspired to discuss it because of me bieng there in punk clothes, and the "trendy" and "regular" kids were just like the old people in the audience while my opinions and reactions were the same as these punk rockers. LOL
"World domination"
Heh. Good ol' Al.
I'll never understand why ANYONE gives a fuck about what someone else does that isn't hurting someone else
Went to a couple of clubs---neo and exit---in Chicago in the 80's LOVED IT! I was slamdancing with the best of them..I was in my 30's then....
its really sweet that donahue is defending punk rock and our rights as children and human beings. right on
Some of them ended up changing the world literally. Al up there invented mixing instruments and sampling. Which spawned rap they took his que and ran with it. Some on the other kids ended up in professional fields as well. Punks usually are pretty smart and end up trying to slip into the system instead of through it.
That's when Punk Rock was dangerous!
How did NO one have a problem with the caller who fired a perfectly capable employee because of a hairstyle. He hired him that way! Dude should have talked to a lawyer. Even back then, I'd say he has a case.
Al you so purdy!
All this worry, and today soccer moms hear The Ramones on the PA at Trader Joe's.
These punkers would be in the 50's and early 60's by now. It would nice if there could be a follow up to see where they are now.

lol, when being Punk actually meant something..
Haha, when I was in college in Charlottesville in 1988, I tried to get a job in a deli with pink hair that was shaved in the back, and they outright told me they wouldn't hire me cuz of my hair. I'm sure I'd have a discrimination lawsuit if that happened today. Now people can work wherever they want, for the most part, with weird hair, tattoos etc.
Charlottesville Virginia?
@@left4deth874 Yup. That's the only Charlottesville I know of..
@@PandoraJonesmodel Ok, well that's close to around my way.
I hope all is well with you.
Are you still into the music?
@@left4deth874 oh yes, definitely. Ah cool.. yeah I went to UVa and lived in Charlottesville for a few years :) I had friends who were part of the DC hardcore scene
@@PandoraJonesmodel Awesome! You were lucky to experience that in the 80's. I was born in 83 so I feel I missed out.
I mean damn Suicidal Tendencies first album dropped the year I was born.
Did you ever get to see Black Flag and Bad Brains?
Thank god my mom realized there were bigger problems in life than me being punk
I love this, but punk and even American hardcore was pretty done by 1984
These videos are reminding me of why I couldn't stand Phil Donahue's show. It was just so tight-you-know-whatted all the time. A whole lot of people including me were very happy when Oprah came along and ate his lunch. Although she got to be a pain in the neck later on, she and her audience seemed a lot more comfortable and with a more open mind.
Al was here!!!
i find myself arguing with echos from a TV show that came out when I was 14.. some of these people in the audience are just amazingly ignorant..
That Aline Crumb reference is dead-on correct!
I used to slam dance back in 1990. That's what they called it then in Boulder, CO. LOL.
so this is where MTX got their song "what is punk?"
Is parents of punks still around
"Nao's"? Was she trying to say "Neo"?
that wimp @3:02 went to a punk rock dance...dork.
Sebastian Corbin he's cooler than you
@aaronwanker1 --- you're right! lol!
wondering where they are now.
The only person I can find from the panel is that lead singer from Ministry
These kinds of punks were rejects. The skinheads were the only people I cared to be around back then, I was a skinhead as well, straightedge, in many ways we were perfectly behaved, worked, we just had a certain world view that was against the established norms and materialism and greed that was the common theme back in the 80's with our corrupt politicians.
A common bond like... Racism?
@@natalie8212, the original skinheads weren't racist.
Slam dancing was people wanting to get hurt and not hurting others, so when you have every one doing that no one gets hurt. It is when others like the dirt heads, cho lows and the likes tthey can stand up to us that there is violence.
Serena Dank looks like Marilyn Mason as an old woman
😂😂😂😂
Did she REALLY say I don't litter?
hahaha i thought the same thing! i guess that was when the anti-littering campaign was just starting lol
IMAGINE? Regressive behavior..........Acceptance is the key!
3:00. Og no like punk rock dancing.
Nao's! /facepalm/
Look at them downplaying the violence, lol. If you're familiar, you KNOW violence is pretty commonplace, friendly or not.
This audience needs mental help.
Hippies sold out.
i would rather have them criticizing the kids rather than the soft parents that let their kids do whatever they want. The whole community is involved with each other and looks out for each other.
I remember when there used to be talk shows about White people.
