Back by popular demand another " why I love" video. I had so many requests to talk about Maria Bulanova, so here it is for you.
Perhaps you are unfamiliar with Maria currently, but I think she is someone set for stardom. She is a different type of Mariinsky dancer. One with amazing artistic energy and technical excitement!
I really enjoy her dancing and how she is a little different from the rest. In some cases she reminds me of a more Bolshoi dancer due to her exciting nature but her pureness and clean upper body brings that Mariinsky elegance.

About Me
Hello everyone! my names Isabella.
I am the first British graduate of the Vaganova ballet academy in Saint Petersburg Russia. I was a soloist working with the Mikhailovsky Ballet and Eifman ballet.
Now I live in London as a full time coach
Here, on my channel I am sharing my passion with you all about the Vaganova technique amongst many other things related to ballet we all love.
It's a hard industry so I am here to help with my insights and knowledge to make it a little easier for you all, as well as to hopefully entertain you with my content.

I watched the exam video with Bulanova and Khoreva way back in 2018 when it first appeared on RUclips and my eyes were constantly drawn to Bulanova, she had such a distinctive style and presence in her posture and movement which I found lovely to watch, as well as of course her exciting turns and jumps. Her enjoyment in her dancing is contagious and I think she has a lovely carriage of shoulders and arms, which in good part is down to her more womanly frame. It’s wonderful to see someone with a feminine build succeeding in ballet, and showcasing such athletic strength. I feel like at the Mariinsky she’s possibly in danger of being typecast in the characterful “second woman” parts. She’s done a lot of Myrtha, Effie, Snow Queen in Nutcracker, Carducha in Paquita, etc. all great parts, especially Myrtha, but it would be nice to see her given a different kind of role challenge. She’d make a perfect Kitri but so far in Don Q she’s always been the street dancer. I agree the Bolshoi might be a better fit further down the line for her, in fact I was kind of surprised when she went to Mariinsky in the first place.

She is the kind of dancer that inspires young girls to become ballerinas. Her turns and jumps are so exciting and draw you into her performance.

I'm glad you mentioned Marianela, as when watching Masha I felt her joy and personality in a similar way as when I watch Marianela. I'm not focusing on her executing the steps, but rather I'm swept up in the ✨️magic✨️ she creates, which is the essence of these mythical stories being told and arguably the essence of why the ballet style was even created.
YES FINALLY. If she doesn't get promoted to 1st Soloist I'll be so mad. Amazing dancer. I hope Yuri knows that the future of the Mariinsky is in dancers like Iliushkina and Bulanova.

I think Maria Bulanova will not be promoted because of her body type - which is crazy because she is thin! She just has a womanly figure, but that seems to be not encouraged at the Mariinsky, unfortunately.

Wow that's a great insight of you about her hypothetical moving to Bolishoi theater, whether or not she will be thinking about it eventually in the future, but why not, with all she's got as technique and as an artist ?
I have followed her from Kuramshin ballet school and I'm so happy that she's enjoying her career in Mariinsky theater, and I really want to continue watching her wherever she dances, with all what she deserves !

Agree with everything - and yes she has that Bolshoi energy! If the Mariinsky was smart, they'd do everything to keep her.

I love bulanova and is really sad that she has not so many roles, and shows... She's so underrated.. But she is the one with much character, with the deeper and true interpretation... They should put on this more attention, cause she s really an unforgettable artist, with so strong charisma... And she s also a fantastic technique.. I really don't understand why she is considered less than many others.

Bulanova has been my favorite dancer from this class since they were still students. I just love her face, too. She’s beautiful in a more exotic way. I’m sure this will be an unpopular thing to say but sometimes I think Khoreva maximized her talents and hard working by having had a brilliant Instagram presence for years. Khoreva (who processes a ballerina music box body and beauty) dominated this class with a technical perfection. What I noticed about Bulanova is her extraordinary body type for a Vaganova dancer. Having had a similar body type myself (and trust me, you still have to be as thin as a reed even if broader shoulders and breasts are evident) no matter how little you weigh it just doesn’t read quite the same. And you have to over compensate by weighing even less so you are light enough to lift. The great thing about her: she’s so young but she’s physically so strong. And it’s not just her amazing turns. Her grand allegro and even her adagio - what she may lack in hyper flexibility she possesses in strength. I’d imagine she’s less injury prone. I’ve seen she’s been cast as Myrtha but not as Giselle. And I’m sure as long as there are jewel box ballerinas like Khoreva it will be a l o n g time before she’s ever cast as Aurora. And yet I see her as capable of being a fine dramatic ballerina too. I actually disagree about a comparison of Bulanova to Nela. Nela has a perfect technique but to me she’s just too studied, as if every glance, ever smile, ever position of every finger tip is planned almost by rote. I think Bulanova follows instruction, of course, as I’ve seen enough videos about both Vaganova and Mariinsky that that’s as integral to survival as breathing. but she’s more spontaneous. (Nela also looks a bit mature at this point in her career.)I can see Bulanova as not being the cleanest dancer as you say but her épaulement and musicality and joy are show-stopping. At the baseline she appears very humble (or as humble as one can be in her position). As if she’s just living her best life but not hung up on endless photo shoots, self promotion and Instagram. You meant inner about a lack of depth perhaps at this age. I’d say the same for Khoreva and perhaps a few other from the latest years. I think Giselle and Swan Lake, especially are roles for ballerinas who have both the maturity and the technique.
You are right. The only other dancer with such body type is Alexandrova of Bolshoy.
I loved seeing her pas de waltz, in bayadere. Specifically that one pas de waltz, her head and arms were gorgeous
And you look alike! I really like Masha. And I was also thinking what kind of role you have Isabella, and now I think that you and Maria are very close both in temperament and in appearance, and both of you are quite different from R. Shakirova. For me, at the moment, the queen is V. Tereshkina, but alas, her ballet age is ending, and the young are running out. My question is this: after Russia, did you have invitations to ballet companies in Europe, in England?

@@fiordililia3min19 Это правда. Но они худющие, а у Булановой грудная клетка нормальная, а не плоская, и смотрится очень крупно - на экзамене видно. Ей хорошо будет Фею Сирени, Мирту, Одетту, кстати - лебеди тоже птички немаленькие.

So.. have you seen her do Fountain - Zarema? If not, look it up - the acting is wonderful, as is her dancing.
OMG YES. I've always thought that's Tereshkina's role, but she really has great dramatic chops. I just wish she'd get more principal roles.

@@marystucker8922 Yeah. :( My fear is she does an Evgenia Obraztsova and leaves for the Bolshoi. I don't follow the Bolshoi much, but I will if Masha goes there.
@@TheFilipinaWifeLife At graduation she was offered a place as soloist at Bolshoi. I agree she would do well there for Yulia is there, Ksenia, Severard, Evgenia, even Svetlana and perhaps more are doing well there. But I think that since she has been at Mariinsky for some time now, it would be hard to forge a new career at the Bolshoi now, dunno.
@@marystucker8922 I do love that the Mariinsky is giving her principal roles, but I feel that she dances the same roles over and over again. Meanwhile you have Maria Khoreva and May Nagahisa dancing Sleeping Beauty, Gisele, etc. I love all three - May is so light and airy in her dancing! I just hope that amazing talent like Masha B doesn't get forgotten by management...which they have known to do before. :(

Marvelous comparisons for Odette. HOWEVER....how long are the legs of real swans compared to the obvious lengths of their necks? I think swans have stubby short legs, working like crazy under the water's surface. The image of a ballet dancer's legs has very little to do with a real swan's proportions...just a point of interest. Comments about the dancer's neck being too prominent are interesting, especially since a swan's neck is VERY long, when fully extended. Maybe Osipova got a bit carried away with her neck alignment and placement. They were all sublime in their own way.

Hello, Isabella! The blog about Maria turned out to be quite fascinating and kind. It is always interesting to know the opinion of a professional. In addition, I saw 2 videos with young Maria, which I had not come across before. How do you manage to keep track of new names in Mariinka? You are very insistent and biased about the Bolshoi Theater. And where did you get this interest from the Big One? According to many people, the Bolshoi has now lost its position in terms of quality and qualifications in terms of ballet, do you agree with this? Thank you. I don’t feel like I’m biased towards Bolshoi. I respect what it offers but my heart will always be towards Mariinsky and I think it exudes the highest form of classical ballet. I will always be respectful of a dancer even if I Critic them in some way as I know how hard we all work and how hard the life is. No need to be unkind or cruel. I love renata! She is a friend. Will do a video on her soon as well as share my favourite dancers who aren’t Russian. There are many I adore. For now I am working on this theme 😊

I thought nobody likes Sarah Mearns - her figure is antiballet? her torso is positively square and her face is asymmetrical to the point of cranial problem (one eye sits well below the other), she has swollen bulimic cheeks and dances like a weightlifter... A person mentioning Renata cannot enjoy Sarah...?

I enjoy watching bulanova much more than khoreva.
Isabella, I thought for a minute, you were at risk of pleasing the woke crowd that demands all shapes and sizes for professional ballet. Symmetry and thin are crucial for the beauty and aesthetics of ballet - taller looks better on stage. Shorter dancers have to be extraordinarily good with elongated limbs and proportional bodies to become principals (e.g. Evgenia Obraztsova and Iana Salenko). Mei Nagahisa is an example of an exquisite, short dancer whom I think will become a Mariinsky principal. Thin is also important for safety (jumps, lifts, joints, health and endurance).
Maria Bulanova is lovely, her looks, a great asset as well; however, in my view, she is not as technically proficient or as rounded (jumps, allegro, as well as beautiful lyricism) as Maria Khoreva and, particularly, Maria Ilyushkina. She was in Maria Khoreva's class. Their final exam class emphasized the differences between them. Having said that, she is a beautiful dancer, obviously with a potentially great future.
Ksenia Zhiganshina is a personal favorite of mine, having watched her go through the Vaganova Academy, a professed favorite of Yuri Fateyev, then apparently passed over (offered some sort of short, temporary contract at the Mariinsky, or just received a better offer from the Bolshoi). We don't know the veracity of the rumors. As you said, she is a superb turner and is often cast in roles that require that talent. After she joined the Bolshoi, she lost a ton of weight that made a huge positive difference to both her dancing and her look. Weight (at the Vaganova Academy) and height may have been why Fateyev apparently reneged on her. She is a soloist at the Bolshoi, but Leonora Severnard (1st soloist), Alyona Kovalyova (principal), Yulia Stepanova (principal), all more recent Vaganova graduates (vs. Svetlana Zakharova and Evgenia Obraztsova) have overtaken her. For me, it's been sad to see Ksenia remain a bottom soloist. It comes down to that overall rounding of Swan-Lake bodies, quick allegro, strong turns, and beautiful lyricism, all in one package. I look forward to seeing her promoted. She has improved so much. Of course, more than ballet attributes go into promotions.
In my view, the top ballerina in the world today is Oksana Skorik, with her breathtaking lyricism, steely strength and impeccable technique. Two of the best dancers in the world, Uliana Lopatkina (retired) didn't have, and Svetlana Zakharova (retirement age) doesn't have, the same steely strength.) Oksana Skorik has developed great artistic expression and is a pure example of artistry within the movement. In ballet, without technique, there can be no artistry. Viktoria Tereshkina is the best turner in my view.

Oksana Skorik is so ethereal and graceful, she has greatly improved from her first years as a professional. Agree with May Nagahisa, she looks very light and beautiful in her dancing! However I think a powerful, dramatic dancer like Masha deserves more opportunities to dance in different roles and be a principal in the Mariinsky someday.
Personally I don’t agree with you, I’m afraid. Although it’s just one opinion versus another. Comparing dancers while still at the academy is difficult. Also I believe Khoreva had a step up on many of her contemporaries because of her genius at social media and her Instagram presence. To be sure she has a perfect story book ballerina’s body and face I’ve seen other outstanding dancers who had more personality and more dynamics from their earliest years: even Zakharova. To me Stepanova and Osipova were/are the greatest dancers of this time (which has now slightly passed and perhaps Osipova might be thinking of retiring. I’m not thrilled with any of the other principals at the Royal Ballet today. Mayara Mahir, recently promoted has a sweet pathos about her. But not since Darcey or Alina have I really adored a RB principal. I’ve never been a fan of Skorik. I have never warmed to her personality or style. Or perhaps it’s her face which looks a bit harsh and unsympathetic to me. Bulanova was certainly not that deficient to Khoreva in their graduation class exam. Yes…Khoreva is queen of adagio. She’s got a remarkable technique but I think she’s just a bit boring. I don’t think she’s ready for Giselle or Aurora but because masses and masses of fans want to see her in every ballerina role she is immediately cast into these roles. (It’s funny but if Bulanova has massive strength and phenomenal pirouettes, Khoreva’s weakness are her turns and her stamina…of course no person on earth works harder than she does (i feel so sorry for her younger sister). And yet Khoreva’s vision scene in Sleeping Beauty, for sample, was not convincing. I don’t think absolute technical perfection is what makes a great dancer. It’s funny you should mention height. Tastes and “fads” change. When Fonteyn was dancing most dancers were about 5’4”. We had Balanchine dancers like Suzanne Farrell who were about 5’6” (which is the equivalent of 5’8” or so today. After Fonteyn dancers were getting taller. And then…all of a sudden Gelsey Kirkland and Natalia Makarova came on the scene and short, very skinny dancers were now in vogue. Two Americans with great talent and phenomenal bodies are Skylar Brandt and Isabella Boylston at ABT. These are two dancers that could be doing so much more and having greater careers if they were in better companies. On the other hand, Balanchine dancers, which were always renowned for having the longest legs and slimmest bodies in the West, are not as they used to be. SAB and NYCB have let their standards slide: I look at a lot of their students and their bodies are not the type of body those of us with strict standards would want to see. I also think a number of their stars have made stylistic digressions from Balanchine’s ethos. Tiler Peck in particular. I can see Isabella’s point that perhaps Bulanova belongs more at Bolshoi. Her full-throttle grand allegro, turns, big personality, slightly more womanly figure…in fact today some of my favorite female dancers are at Bolshoi. Oh well, these are just my opinions. But I will say this: the Paris Opera Ballet has the dancers with the most gorgeous bodies, and dance with an elegance and style that is hard to match. They are extraordinary, too. It’s funny: when Tsiskaridze was interviewed about ballet companies in the west compared to the Russian companies, the only company he felt deserved recognition on any sort of level was the Paris Opera Ballet. I credit Nureyev for imprinting his genius on its great crop of dancers and on bringing the great ballets to stage and choreograph for POB and the west.
@@l.alexandra5871 The Balanchine ethos is not about specific body types. It's about dancing with clarity, fast feet and musical accuracy. As such Tiler Peck is one of the few truly Balanchinean dancers today.
I don’t think I see what everyone else is seeing here - I don’t think she is anything exceptional?
With their erratic and draggy tempi, why do the Russian ballet orchestras cater to the dancers so much? Why can’t they keep the tempi consistent? Because left to themselves, dancers, especially Russian ones, will do nothing but slow down even more.
Great character, but unfortunately the proportions aren't perfect.. The waistline and the neck are a bit too wide.
