@@Davey_bfg71I think they are very very justified in saying what they said, I mean if I'm being totally honest I don't even know if I disagree and I absolutely love the original queen songs, I think it's just about perspective and not nostalgia, like if I'm judging based on nostalgia alone then nothing will ever beat that original queen sound I don't even think if queen had 100 chances to remake that original queen sound they could even do it themselves again, that sound will be forever engraved in musical history, but if I'm judging based truly on how it's sung this one sticks to me like glue, it could be that I'm thinking of freddie when i hear this version but undeniably george michael absolutely did freddie better justice than anyone will ever do when it comes to this song alone. As far as I'm concerned for that moment, these 6 mins, George embodied this song and made it his own in order to pay the highest debt to freddie.
Here is what I always say...Don't even try to cover songs by Freddie Mercury, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Bonnie Raitt, Elton John...unless you are George Michael. No one else I can even think of who could do that. Who else could hold their own with powerhouse women like Arthea Franklin, Whitney Houston and Mary J Blige. No one but George. Miss him.
I watched this concert live because I loved Freddie and Queen, and I was devasted when Freddie died. I grew up listening to him and regarded Freddie as the best singer out there ( Jimmy, you should also watch Freddie do a duet with Montserrat Caballe) and at this tribute concert were all these great singers of that particular era, like David Bowie and Annie Lenox and so many other singers and they sang well but nobody, nobody could sing even half as good as Freddie. It was so apparent how amazing singer Freddie really was, until George steps up and sings Somebody to love. And all the people out there listening, their jaws dropped down, because we all knew George was amazing singer but to sing as close as to Freddie was experience out of this world! Chilling and inspiring! GM was definitely a musical royalty! I know they must be all singing up there together!
I believe they were good friends. A vocal coach commented George had no fear of high notes. How true! He's,one of the greatest singers ever. This performance was one of the greatest in my 60 plus yrs of music listening. It's reported how down to earth he was and sooo generous giving to charities, hospitals. Very beloved especially in the UK. Also no crummy autotune.
The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert is fantastic & there has never been another tribute concert like it since!! I agree … George Michael’s rendition of SOMEBODY TO LOVE is brilliant & IMO the only acceptable cover of this song. G.M. was nervous about performing it cuz not only is it a huge Queen hit, Freddie’s fav song, but it is also G.M.’s favorite Queen song. 👏👏 BRAVO 👏👏
George was the only one who would do it justice ..rip to both Freddie and George very sad loss ..queen are amazing ..us brits always react to queen this way ..watch the crowd singing bo rap at a greenday concert hyde park london ..
George said in a interview that this was his best live performance he ever did. He sung really good in the Concert Of Hope that one blew me away too. Look that one up. This performance gave me chills think Freddy Mercury wrote this song i'm not sure. but when Queen done it , it sounded a little different. And when the crowd did the love part you see guitarist Brian May Smile because he knew Freddy Heard Them and that was a way the crowd remembered Freddy. You really want to see crowd control, check out George’s 25 live world tour. It’s the entire concert recorded at the new Wembley in London. I’ve watched that concert over and over again because it’s always fresh and new. The way he communicates with his audience and how his audience sings along with him is amazing. I saw him at Madison Square Garden and in Washington DC on this world tour. I will treasure that memory for all of my life. He had the most impeccable pitch perfect live voice I’ve ever heard.
George and Freddie were friends. This was at Wembley Stadium in London, approx 72,000 people in the stadium but it was watched live via satellite by about 2 billion people. George said it was the hardest performance of his life, he was still in the closet at this point, singing a song in memory of his friend who recently died from HIV/AIDs, and George was secretly waiting to find out if his partner also had HIV and would suffer the same fate as his friend.

This concert was at London’s old Wembley stadium in 1992 a few months after Freddie Mercury’s death from HIV/AIDS, so it served as an AIDS benefit concert as well raising funds for research as HIV/AIDS was at the time still very much a death sentence. George Michael’s partner was at the concert and had just been diagnosed with the virus and passed away 2 years later 😢 George Michael recorded a song called Jesus To A Child which reflected his grief in losing his partner and was a tribute to him 😢 This audience was approximately 74,000! Artists appearing included David Bowie, Annie Lennox, Metallica, Def Leppard, Guns N Roses’ Axl Rose and Slash, The Who’s Roger Daltrey to name a few. The movie Bohemian Rhapsody mainly deals with Queen’s earlier career in the 1970’s and their climb to superstardom and their infamous, legendary 20 minute set at the LIVE AID charity concert in 1985 at the very same stadium 😊
