- Today I took my 2021 TW200 on the highway to see just how fast this bike can go. For a bike with a 196cc engine I was fairly surprised with the results! I don't recommend commuting long distances at high speeds on this bike. It puts a lot of strain on the engine running at high RPM's but also this bike is not equipped to stop very well at those speeds. However for exploring backroads and zipping around town this bike is perfect!

The TW is a great bike and like you say it’s a BLAST to drive. I don’t have a lot of experience with the 200 but the few times I’ve been able to drive one, I had a smile on my face!!

FYI, this is the lowest powered dual sport in the category. Just remember that... if u like motorcycles and are going to stay in the hobby then I predict you will sell this soon after you learn how to ride.

My 2020 is far from my first bike. I have been riding since 1973. I will say that it is one of the most fun overall. It works great for around town, but really shines off road.
I think every motorcyclist should own one at some point in their lives.

I definitely haven't been riding since '73 haha, but I've been riding (on the road, not counting dirt bikes) since 2007 and I've owned lots of bikes at this point. You're right, the TW is the most fun overall. Something about riding the snot out of that tiny bike, the big ass wheel, the low seat height, and the "I can do it!" attitude of it just makes it funner than literally every bike I've ridden.
for anyone wanting to take the tw to the "next level "get yourself a 13t front and 43t rear sprocket an air filter , full system exhaust , and get yourself a set of bigger carbs "stock are 30mm upgrade to 34mm" and adjust whatever it is for it to work and lastly get rid of your wheels "the best replacement would be the ttr 225 wheels
Now The Real "HP" the Tw has is 13hp at rear wheel and these mods idk maybe will get you to 16hp but if you want to kick stuff up a notch you can do some "PORTING WORK" to get better compression not too much but maybe from 9.5 to 10.5 and that's all what you can do but trust me if you do these you'll transfer it to a beast for it's displacement
I was thinking of getting one of these just to ride out on all the endless gravel roads I always pass up riding by on my Harley. There are several hundreds of miles of roads you do not want to take a street bike down but you can spend all day exploring.

This is my first bike and honestly for anything but the freeway this bike feels great the power is good nothing crazy but itll get you going gonna get a mt07 or trident after this bike but definitely a solid beginner bike
Power for off-road & around town is certainly not bad. It’s hard to beat considering cost of ownership. Gotta love the little Tdubs 😃🤘🏼

Yeah I was surprised with just how fast it is for a 200cc. It’s pretty impressive what this bike can do!
I had a 2007 Yamaha XT225. I put 36,000 on it before I sold it. The engine still seemed very strong. But here’s the rule I lived by. The bike topped out at 80. I made it a point to not cruse over 80% of that, which is 64. At times if I was on the freeway in big cities and the traffic was running 70+ I’d run it that fast to keep in the flow of traffic but that wasn’t over long periods of time.
I believe the reason my engine seemed so rock solid was because I broke it in right. Not over 45 till 500 miles. Not over 55 till 1000 miles. Never wound the engine out during the breaking period either.
You must be a light guy.... At a little under 200 neither of my TW's will get that kind of speed unless its downhill. It falls flat on its face at speed if you his an actual hill, it wont even maintain 55 mph in that case....
Biggest issue at freeway speeds is stability. At those speeds the chassis is very unsettled. I have had mine go into a full on tank slapper from the gust of wind as i was being passed by an 18 wheeler.
My weight is around 180 + another 20 or so with gear. Definitely not a highway bike, I totally agree it’s a bit unsettling at higher speeds! But a great bike for around town 🤙🏼
Too bad Yammie has not come up with a new version of this bike. Yes, it would cost a lot of money honey BUT.....they already have a 300 cc FI engine and 6-speed manual tranny READY. TW300 anyone? Would be an instant hit with what it already has which is a comfortable 2-up low seat and fat rear tire not to mention that it is already set between an adventure bike and a dual sport. Then with the new hardware you would have a REAL capable interstate cruiser.
Soo many missed opportunities by these Japanese moto-makers.

So with a little taller rear sprocket it should be able to cruise at 60 or 65 pretty well huh.
I believe so, I’m going to upgrade the chain and rear sprocket. Hopefully it will perform a bit better at higher speeds
What does the manual say about top speed? Does it say that one should not go into the red on the speedometer?
If I get this I want to chain it to my front porch so I jump on it and head to the store. I now have a fleece shirt with armor, so much easier. I may consider my half helmet to make getting going even easier.
Is 55 for 30 or 50 miles OK? Sustainability?
that really is not all that bad! 65- 70 can be done on some highway! that will totally be fine back roads to the trails! thanks! who really needs to go 80 anyway

Hey I got my TDUB up to 80mph on I 95. I will do a video of it, it was about 50 out so a little cold and I had and back wind and three miles to get up to 80. However I will do it again on video.

Yeah I would not recommend riding it at this speed consistently. It was more for demonstration purposes

@@pyro_chip8287 yeah I was surprised, the bars need risers because they are 1 1/8” think instead of 7/8”. But in the video it shows the full install, with wire management and the pro taper risers I used!

Why do people keep listing their weight before talking about to speed? Weight is not a factor of top speed on flat ground.
get to speed faster sure but not too speed. This is not pulling a sled, it is rolling resistance of tires only. Google is free

The speedometer shows a speed that is five km / h lower than the actual speed because the spring that controls the tachometer needle gets tired over time, because if the tachometer were set precisely, the speedometer would show a higher speed than the real one after a long time. (English is my second languege.) I hope this comment helped someone. :).

Nice! Better than me, I am 240, at 6k feet above sea level, 52 tooth rear sprocket and topped out at 66mph. I won't take it on a major highway like you did, so hats off for that! Good informative video!

As they say in aviation Hot, High, and Humid reduces performance. Cool dry day will give you best performance.
I had two of these bikes. One that was an older model with a drum brake up front. The last one I owned was a 2005 that I bought brand new. I put 15,000 miles on that bike and the only thing that ever needed was the rear shock replaced under warranty. (I did mostly trail riding) I traded it for an ATV and it was still running great with only a very very small amount of oil seeping from the top of the engine fins. Since that bike I bought a few Yamaha V-Star 1100 cruisers. But that TW was such a fun bike! I averaged 70 miles per gallon. I even put a different size rear sprocket on to try to help with the highway riding. But that bike is definitely not meant for the highway.

I’m getting a 2021 TW for non-highway and off road considerations, leaving street speed rides to my 1250 GSA. Can’t take the 1250 on gnarly trails like the TW, I hope they both fit in my trailer.
That’s a great idea, the Tdubs is definitely going to be more enjoyable to ride on gnarly terrain. Much less weight, makes you feel more in control!
Bought a new 2019 T dub in 2020 right before Covid 19 really got going. No depression from Covid at all. Put a Cycleracks front and rear rack on it. Then some Tusk hand protectors, Riding to some trails it seemed like it was screaming at 55. Replaced stock rear sprocket with a 42 tooth one. Love it . Still great on trails at low speeds, purrs at 60 and 70 doesn't seem like it's redlining. T dubs, when you ride one you got to smile.
I need to do that as one of my next modifications! One of my biggest problems with this bike is how hard the engine is working at 50mph. I don't want to put stress on the engine, but I also don't want to hold up traffic haha
1st gear is still low enough for normal trails ?
And how many links did u take out of your chain?
@@MostroMoto Don't worry, My wife's is a 1995 and it's got 32k km on it, always riding it full throttle at top speed. All we had to do was piston rings around 25k. Pretty normal cheap and easy maintenance. Considering a KTM would need new rings every like 5k minimum or something.
Realistically, that's probably about as fast as you'd want to go on those tires. I can't imagine that those fat tires are rated for speeds much higher than that. On the other hand, it's much faster than a Hayabusa when on single-track off-road. It would blow the doors off the Aston Martin in a mud pit too.
Yeah I agree about the tires 100% probably one of the only times I will take it on the highway. Hahaha definitely faster than the Hayabusa or Aston off-road 😂

I want one but here in s.w. florida used tw 200's don't come up for sale very often, i would get a new one but the dealerships down here really screw you on the price, after tax, title, tag (witch is normal cost) they add on shipping and numerous other fees that add up to close to $2,000 over the price tag on the motorcycle, it just all around sucks 😤.
Yeah dealers are notorious for racking up fees. If you find a decent used one I would definitely recommend jumping on that. It’s worth the wait, if it takes a extra month or so that’s better then handing over extra cash to the dealer. Or maybe you could try looking out of state, if you’ve got a truck or know someone that does you could make a road trip out of it. I drove about 3 hours away to get one at a good price. But certainly worth the wait. Good luck 👍🏼

I haven't read all the comments so sorry if this question has been asked before but how is the TW200 on highway hills? Do you have to drop down a couple of gears and speed?
The TW 200 certainly lacks power at higher speeds, on the highway it can maintain 50 relatively easily. If you plan on going on long highway rides, or at higher speeds I probably wouldn’t recommend this bike. The TW200 can handle hills fairly well, but like you said you will probably need to downshift once or twice on steeper inclines. I hope this helps answer your question! 😃🌲🤘🏼

Started on a Yamaha r3, then got an xsr900. Sold both of them, and I put in for a transfer to Corpus Christi Texas from St. Louis. I think I’ll buy one of these. Hopefully it will do well in sand, but I’ve always wanted a dual sport, where I can go wherever I want.
You should definitely look into it! It’s a great type of motorcycle. Like you said, they can do just about anything & go anywhere!
I live in cape Girardeau 2 hours south of St. Louis and I’m going to festus tomorrow at surdyke Yamaha to pick up my 2022 tw. Did you end up getting one?
Light? The thing is actually kinda porky for such a small engine size. I have one and love it, but Yamaha could do much better. When you think about how long the run has been, since’87 with virtually no improvement, they should be practically giving them away. Think about it, the engineering and tooling costs have been recouped decades ago. Yet the cost goes up every year and we get absolutely nothing for it. Larger tank so you can actually take it for a long ride, a six speed gearbox, real human sized foot pegs, not the same size as on the PW50, a skid plate that isn’t made of recycled pop cans. It could use a rear disc brake.

Same as my bike! I have a 47t rear now, I bet in a draft on the highway it would go 75 mph GPS but not sure I want to try it. Poor little engine is working pretty hard even at 65 mph. 😆
That’s a nice upgrade, I’m hoping at some point to do that upgrade to my bike. Yeah definitely a bit sketchy on the highway, probably wouldn’t recommend it haha

Honestly I’m kind of surprised that a bike with such little power pulls like it does in 5th gear. I’m guessing because of the gearing but most small cc bikes 5th gear has no acceleration and it’s more so just to drop the RPMs down.

A sprocket change would certainly help. However you don’t gain any power, all you are doing is moving where the power is. So you might have a bit better time at higher speeds, but you will loose a little bit on the lower end (torque). You might be able to squeeze a bit more power with a jet kit & pipe. Good luck 👍🏼

This is my video I did on the handlebars. I chose these bars because of the good reputation ProTaper has. They are simple, strong and they have a pretty normal angle that works well with the bike! Thanks for watching!

man ive never had mine above 60, i get scared its gonna blow up lol. im not used to how high rpm bikes can go. to me 60 sounds like 10k rpm or something crazy like that. i have a smaller rear sprocket ( i think 47 tooth) to make highway speeds less rpm and i usually stop at 55 ish on the highway (luckily thats the speed limit on my normal commute) just to give the bike an easier time, im guessing i could easily run it 60-65 but it just feels kind of sketchy idk. id love to know what rpm this thing can handle reliably. i think the 47 tooth sprocket really makes a huge difference if your doing any highway riding and doesnt seem to affect off road, unless your on a really steep rocky hill or something. 55 mph with the 47 tooth feels like the bike is in a sweet spot both in terms of rpm and vehicle stability at that speed.
Where you running the stock front and rear sprockets on this bike at the time? Didn't know a TW could do 70mph.
I’m wanting to get my fist bike. Especially to save money on gas. A frequent commute I make has a short stretch of 55. I’m 6’4 295, I wonder if it would work for me
Great question, and thanks for watching. This bike would certainly be good for around town, but don’t expect it to be anything fast. For on the highway I probably would not recommend it. I weigh 185 and the engine is definitely working hard around 50 mph. That being said it’s still a great bike, and if it’s something you can test drive I’d highly recommend that!

Dude. No just no... this is the lowest seat height and the lowest power of all dual sports. For your height get a wr250r. Its 10x the bike especially for your height and weight. I am very close to your height and weight. Rode a tw and own a wr250r...

@@ezntertainment3601 and just and fyi.. if you are getting a bike to do mainly highway then dont get a small dual sport. OR get the wr250 and put supermoto tires/rims on it. But either way, small dual sports are just not comfortable on the highway. although the wr250r can take my ass about 75mph max. but it does not feel comfortable at that speed. that's why I say if you just want a highway bike then anything other than a dual sport would be better. dual sports are just not heavy and powerful like a good highway bike should be. and dont worry about gas milage for any bike. they ALL sip gas. even my 08 1350cc hayabusa was cheap on gas.

Those TW’s are so cool looking. They never go out of style.
This bike just checks all the boxes. Even if you feel like you've graduated from it and are on to larger, faster bikes, this TW200 is the best bike to keep around, maintain, store it well just to have. There will definitely come a day when you want to teach someone how to ride, or u got a friend coming in town and u need an extra bike, or you're headed to the woods with friends for camping or hiking stuff. I'm a firm believer in having certain "lifetime" vehicles that you buy and keep forever, possibly pass on to your family when u croak. A lifetime truck and a lifetime TW200 belong on that list.
😀 that's pretty good I'm 145lbs and at 960 feet above sea level I hit 72 mph last week but that's kinda hard on the motor I usually keep it around or below 60 for the most part 👍
Yeah at that speed you can definitely start to here the engine screening hahah. 60 is a pretty good speed for it. I was pretty surprised to see it get up to 70!

Not sure why people put lights on the front. You get going down a trial and snag a bush or brush a tree and no more rigid LED lights
Hey, thanks for the comments. I totally get what you’re saying about the front light pods. Although I have been down on the bike when off roading and they’ve been fine. Where they are positioned when you go down the bike hits the handle bars before the led pods. I went down at about 20 mph and they held up well! But I’m sure there are certain circumstances where they might get messed up
@@MostroMoto I just got me a Grote LED light. Cost me 100$ for one freaking light. It's more a light bar 5x2 inches. I plan on mounting it to the front top rack above OEM headlight when I get one from the dude off Yamaha Tw200 World Facebook group.

Yeah I owned a grom as my first bike, definitely a blast! One day I hope to get one again 🤙🏼
