Man, I'm just a 27 years old brazilian boy, but I'm a Maiden fan since I was 6 and I always wanted to play bass like Steve, note this, not play bass but play bass like Steve. For that reason I watched all bass covers from IM you can imagine on youtube and I saw a lot live bands and I'm sure that there is no other guy in the world that reproduces his sound, technique and passion on the bass so precisely, I probably watched 2 or 3 times each of your videos. And guess what, I'm about to get the very first bass in my life, and you will help me a lot to make my dream come true. Thanks friend!

Oi! Obrigado! Thank you very much for all these compliments. If you can find a second-hand Steve signature PB like mine, you'll be lucky. But meanwhile, Fender Precision basses are really cool basses and close to Steve's sound. Check out my gear here. www.didiergerome.com/my-gear Take care. DG
Brilliant!! One of my favorite Maiden albums too. You've captured, 'Harries', tone and playing style perfectly. I wish they'd have toured this album last year as a 30th aniversary tour playing it in full with the original stage set too! Up the Irons!!

Thanks. I did my best to stick to what he undoubtedly recorded intuitively and rulelessly ;) DG
Love your covers and this is surely on of my favourites. I have so much help of your videos when learning the maiden songs. Thanks for your great work and proffesional videos 💪🏼
Holy moly! That was good. I didn’t even realise I’m listening to a bass cover. This is my most favourite song and as a learning bassist I can so far only dream of playing this song. Epic!! Seventh son of the seventh son starts sounding better at 7th minute :p
Hats off sir ! Way to go buddy from Casablanca Morocco, you nailed it totally, the key of mastering these bass lines in this track are in the right hand, even Steve Harris admitted one day that he managed often to play it in the middle or the end of the concerts cuz his hands are already warmed up very well and can attack the lines steadily, good tone, good timing, good groove ... What else ?! Nice video editing in between. Any criticism about this cover is pure jealousy. Period / DIEU te bénisse.
Just amazing.... I'd like to see you playing "The evil that men do" Steve plays too fast galloping his fingers on the bass. Thanks buddy your work is just amazing.
This is beyond beautiful mate!! God bless you!! \m/

Cheers ;) My aim was to do my best in covering this eponymous song for this very album was the last Iron Maiden I enjoyed. I quit listening to their next material. It was a kind of tribute ;)
Didier GÉRÔME while choices may vary from person to person but I personally love the BNW era very much as well, as a religious Maiden fan from the last 20 years. Would also like to see you play The Rime of the ancient Mariner (keeping it within your preferences ;)

Just scroll down my bass cover set list. I made it with another one explaining the difficult parts.
8:50 this bass part has so many balls that I usually wait to get on the freeway to crank it up, my radio has a 5-volt output to the bass, loud and clear as if it was designed for Steve Harris bass sound. Great cover though, great cover!!
The strumming of the chords and use of the ring finger looks like a flamenco technique on the bass. You put a lot of time into this, awesome job it's not easy to keep the galloping going lol. I like the use of the three fingers on the right hand, tone is perfect. 👍👍
Thank you so very much for this lovely comment. I actually clearly stated that I used 3 fingers at times to avoid criticism from Steve's fans, for he uses only two. I'm glad you liked it anyway. DG
Other bass players: I slap, I use no picks, and my anchorage point is thumb on the pick up/lowest string. Steve Harris: I don't slap, I use no picks, and my anchorage point is wralm on the right of the bass.
Like you noted in your other video, there is a slight difference in sound with 3 fingers from the 2 as Steve normally uses. Great cover, those are some large strings!
Another excellent cover! I've learnt quite a few songs using your excellent versions so thank you! Can you please give some advice on how you count the quiet middle section with the spoken voice? Thanks again!

Hey, thanks ;). This section is uncountable for I bet it was played on the fly with no rule at all. I had to split the whole section on my daw in smaller coloured parts and look at them while playing, it was just undoable 🤣
It was probably improvised but you can count it as 8 groups of 4 bars alternating between E and C chords like so: E - 14/8 16/8 14/8 9/8 C - 11/8 13/8 12/8 10/8 E - 14/8 13/8 16/8 11/8 (Vocals come in on the 5th beat of the first bar of this line) C - 14/8 12/8 14/8 11/8 (Bass drums start on the last beat of the last bar of this line) E - 14/8 14/8 14/8 12/8 (Bass drum hits every other beat, guitars start chugging a little) C - 14/8 12/8 14/8 12/8 E - 14/8 12/8 14/8 10/8 (Build up starts) C - 14/8 12/8 12/8 14/8 (The last 2 beats are the first 2 power chords that start the next section) This counting only strictly works for the bass as the choir, guitars etc don't quite line up on the same chords with it all the time.
Thank you so much for your insight and gifts. I am part of a cover band, with Nikko, yes, that Nikko, my good friend Mitch, Mike, Eldad, and last and certainly not least Paulo on vocals. Mitch and Nikko have a restaurant together called “Rock & Roll Ribs”. Every year we play for the anniversary of the restaurant, in December. This happens to be one of the tracks we are doing this year. Didier, i want to invite you to South Florida to be a part of the celebration. I’d love to hear you play this with Nikko. Let me know. My name is Rich. I appreciate your talent my Friend. You help me figure out which register Steve is playing in, and my fingerings in that register. You have many fans in South Florida!

Vraiment cool Made of Iron.
Dear Gerome, are You using the SPB-4 pickup or the stock one provided with that bass? How does the blu one compares with the current white?

Hey, my bass is the SH signature model, so it does have the Seymour Duncan especially made for Steve. I don't know the current one and never tested it. What I can say is that it is Mexican made, whereas mine was Japanese... big difference. DG
I have both, I can say that the West Ham White one is waaaay heavier because it has a maple body. The neck is slightly thinner as well, whereas the Japanese one has one of the biggest necks I've ever played on a P Bass.

Watching Steve Harris cover videos I realize he is the best heavy metal bass player in history. Thanks for the outstanding cover and Up the Irons!

One of my favorite Maiden albums too.
You've captured, 'Harries', tone and playing style perfectly.

Steve Harris uses chords a LOT. Part of what gives him his signature sound

Here for an encore. It's my favorite Maiden song. It just keeps proving it every time I hear it. That ending...
Thanks ;)
Didier the lord of the 4 strings!!!😮

nice
The reason of the mirrored pick guard is that Didier is an exact copy of Steve Harris!
Like you noted in your other video, there is a slight difference in sound with 3 fingers from the 2 as Steve normally uses. Great cover, those are some large strings!

E - 14/8 16/8 14/8 9/8
C - 11/8 13/8 12/8 10/8
E - 14/8 13/8 16/8 11/8 (Vocals come in on the 5th beat of the first bar of this line)
C - 14/8 12/8 14/8 11/8 (Bass drums start on the last beat of the last bar of this line)
E - 14/8 14/8 14/8 12/8 (Bass drum hits every other beat, guitars start chugging a little)
C - 14/8 12/8 14/8 12/8
E - 14/8 12/8 14/8 10/8 (Build up starts)
C - 14/8 12/8 12/8 14/8 (The last 2 beats are the first 2 power chords that start the next section)
This counting only strictly works for the bass as the choir, guitars etc don't quite line up on the same chords with it all the time.

first Maiden song I ever heard in my life when I was 11 and it change my mind...great cover of a classic epic track!

Cheers, on RUclips, some channels provide such videos.
Grande canção.
Abraço do Brasil.

Didier, I am loosing it at the arpegio. (4.15) I am always too early or too late with the note switches. What logic is behind this?
That's an awesome question mate !
The logic is that there is NOT any !
In my opinion, Steve played it at random and the others clamped on it in post prod !
To be able to record it myself I had to divide his line into colour pieces and watch the changes carefully on the DAW screen when recording, that was a Roman soldier job !
So don't look for a logic, just do your best to match his changes.
I will soon publish a "making of" for this very song so that you can see what I'm talking about.
Take care mate !
Thank you so much. I normally have no problems feeling the beat without counting but this part made me feel realy stupid!!
You're not ! The part itself is messy.
Merci beaucoup ;)
Flat-wound? Wow!
Yup, I re-installed them for the occasion.
How do you count the bars to play the middle section?
It was a real challenge. I split each section and used colours to know when to change. I played and glanced at the DAW screen to get it right ;)
@ Great! I'll rent a projector in case we have to play it live! :)
I did enjoy this comments about technique ✌
Merci ;)
