Great video but I belive you missunderstood the goal of the project. Paris already has a great network for suburban to get into Paris (RER and Transilien).
GPE is about improving suburb to suburb transit (which is why none of the lines are going into Paris)
Except for line 14 extension, which are built to connect the rest of the grand paris express and Paris
Whats even more impressive is the relative cost and speed of this vs Anglophone countries
Well actually...the cost isn't that much competitive after all. Sure, at the beginning, when the project was estimated at 19 billion euro, it was wildly impressive. But as of today, with a 38,5 billion price tag (according to the latest estimates), it's cost is actually very close to the per kilometer cost of the Elizabeth line in London. So after all, the "Anglosphere" isn't THAT much inefficient. At least in these regards. It's impressive that Paris is building 200 km of metro but let's also not forget that the Elizabeth line was also quite an impressive project, at 117 km length. Both cities are setting the bar quite high up
@@Adrenaline_chaser you need to consider that the actually newly built parts of the Elizabeth line are really just the 41 km of tunnels in central London, the rest being existing infrastructure (which did get some improvement to be fair)
@@cyri96 Yeah, Crossrail and the GPE are two wildly different beasts.
meanwhile NYC will build 3 stations with partially built tunnels and the cost will be almost7 billion and it will be finished by 2034 (not gonna happen). 😢
When the French build, they can really build
The metro of Paris is not the unique existing urban rail transit system serving Paris and its suburbs. There are also 5 RER lines (total length 602 km), 15 suburban train lines (1294 km) and 14 tramways lines (185 km).
And one fenicular.
And soon one urban cable
I am not familiar with Paris but from the map it looks like an amazing project, with circular lines and connections to the airports!
I wished there was such a level of investment in public transportation all around the world!

France (along with China) is also building a similar metro system in Belgrade, Serbia. So we can expect it to be very modern and efficient (at least way more than their North American counterparts). Construction just started recently, but idk if they have made significant progress since…
Bearing in mind that we are from Belgrade, honestly, it is progressing so slowly (or regressing so fast 😅) that we don't know we will ride the Belgrade Metro in our lifetime.

Connecting the airports is a great idea fro all visitors. will definitely help the traffic and the reputation of the city.
and teh first outer ring is definitely a great idea to help the suburb to suburb transit.
Actually for the visitors they are building the CDG Express to Gare de L'Est and they will have to pay 25 euros.
The connections with the metro that's much more for the locals.
This should be a template for many cities throughout the world!
maybe. But it's so slow even in Paris, it's disappointing, over-budgets, delays, so many wrong choices (example of creating the line 17 for the north airports, instead of really improving the already existent RER in that corridor)

6 years from construction starting to opening is quite correct.
The ground in Paris is quite a nightmare to dig through, it often requires the use of ground hard freezing, slurry TBM's, etc.
M17 is great, it will be offer another way to reach the main airport that will improve the journeys of airport workers or visitors and will be part of a larger connection (notably with the recently proposed M19).
Currently RER B is cracking at the seams due to overcrowding, and the lack of a dedicated tunnel for both B and D limits the capacity. Also, direct trains to CDG reduce the capacity for other users.
RER B is expected to further grow in ridership and it wouldn't be compatible with the increase in PT modal share to and from the airport.
By its very existence, M17 will improve service for RER B users, as it will relieve the load.
CDG Express too by the way.
Plus, the current state of M17's route isn't even the complete one as it will probably be extended Westward from Saint-Denis Pleyel.
And finally, even if CDG T4 appears to be canceled, it is almost guaranteed that the project will come back in the near future.
It was canceled in 2020, when some thought that aviation would slow down and take decades to recover.
Instead, it is booming, with Airbus having a number of orders never seen before and growth forecasts for air travel that far exceed the ones pre-2020...
CDG will end up with 3 ways to access Paris, each with different levels of service and routes :
M17, RER B and CDG Express.
Just like LHR has the Piccadilly line, the Elizabeth's line and the Heathrow Express.
Currently, most CDG passengers do *not* reach the airport via the RER B and transit authorities want to massively improve that.
For this to happen, RER B cannot remain the only rail based access mode from the city.
Anyway, it wouldn't be able to cope with the level of public transit modal share that they intend to reach.
Not building M17 would have lead to tons of critics about even more saturation of RER B, as CDG would have required tripling or quadrupling the capacity.

@@mfc4987C'est la même dynamique pour le logement aussi depuis 10 ans. Le Grand Paris ce n'est pas que les transports en commun mais aussi l'immobilier. Effectivement des quartiers entiers ont été détruits et reconstruits à neuf.
Paris intra muros et ses arrondissements centraux sont les zones les plus insécututaires en Ile de France, avec la Seine Saint Denis en général et les chiffres sont bas. Les banlieues en général ont moins de crimes violent que Paris intra muros.

Really appreciate the Line 14 extension to Orly Airport, the RER and tram won't be alone anymore. Another major global city that will finally have a direct metro airport connection, unlike the New York/New Jersey metro area, which insist on AirTrain transfers at JFK and Newark. LaGuardia is very close to Manhattan and the hotels around Queens Plaza, yet officials insist the Astoria Line can't be extended a couple of stops.
Paris and Moscow Metro and Suburban Systems keep getting bigger and bigger
Meanwhile London and New York have stayed stagnant
At least yall get decent transit, Italian cities suck and are well behind those of the other European Big 5

London has not stagnated. It has two ring roads already. The circle line on the underground which has been operational since the mid 90's and the London Overground which has been operational from around 2007. Suburb to suburb transport has just been completed last year with Crossrail aka the Elizabeth Line. They're now thinking of doing another Crossrail line from north to south

Could you do a series on the efforts to re-open the beaching lines in the UK, as there are active moves to rebuild and restore them? This would be an exciting thing to explore.

Can't wait for it to be achieved. This is going to alleviate the insane road traffic and give work opportunities to millions of people. Will also reduce transportation time to many people as well.

You missed the point ! The project will provide connections of the suburbs AROUND Paris and take away the need to go into the overcrowded city to change lines and go out again.

No, that's also the extension of existing lines, new tramway lines and remodeling real estate alongside those lines. Plus retrofitting the entire network, 1000+ unique stations.

They needed to build this project because people in Paris were complaining that traveling between _arrondissements_ required traveling through central Paris, which meant a lot of overcrowding in the center of the city. Paris Grand Express bypasses the need to go into central Paris, and that makes inter-city travel a lot more convenient and less crowded.
No, the arrondissements are inside central Paris. The 1st arrondissement is where the Louvre is located, the 8th is the Champs Élysées, etc. People complained that you could not go from suburb to suburb without passing through Paris.

The arondissement are districts of central Paris as the poster above me said, but you are right about the nature of the problem that is supposed to besolved, particulalry with Line 15. The idea is to provide more direct connection between close suburbs without having to go into Paris proper to chnage between lines. This will allow to unbloat a little a few of the metro and even RER lines as well.

Bonne vidéo qui résume bien le projet. Son premier but est d'éviter que les gens ne soient plus obligés de rentrer dans Paris pour aller d'un banlieue à une autre. Sur RUclips il y a beaucoup de vidéo montrant l'avancée des travaux dont une station qui sera à 52m en sous-sol ou celle de la Défense aussi appelée la station "cathédrale".
Anne Hildalgo and the paris municipality as whole are absolutely goated with how ambitiously they've embraced sustainability and livability in their plans for the city and its metro area. You're doing a great job covering these developments, love it!
This has nothing to do with Anne Hidalgo. This is a regional project that was started by Sarkozy, well before Hidalgo was mayor of Paris. Hidalgo is very unpopular because she put the city into debt with a disastrous management. Foreigners are strongly mistaken about her, she's not the genius that is described by some youtubers, literally the opposite.

I dont really blame them for that, the GPe is a complex affair and most youtubers only focus on the building aspect and not the planning.
GPE is basically a political derivative of a project carried out by the RATP since 1970, the Metrophérique. The project remained behind due to low funding in public transport.
At the beginning of 2000 the State and politicians took over the project and merged it with Orbival, a departmental political variant of the 90s, to create the GPE, in about 20 years (1996-2016)

People from the place she's supposed to rule love her because she improved some stuff like , streets that have school around with no car access. She may have indepted the city but she's doing her job at least.
The city I live in is proposing something far less ambitions, but it will definitely cost more, take longer to build and will most likely be a massive white elephant.

We must add the CDG Express, a new direct train line between the Gare de l'Est and Charles De Gaulle airport. Project not included in the Grand Paris express, opening planned for 2027.
Yes for that's a private project and the passengers will have to pay 25 euros for it. The Grand Paris Project is a public project payed with taxpayer money and everything will be included in the local public transportation passes.
All these "renewable energy-powered city" are bogus. The electric grid is country-wide and not city-wide. At least Paris is already low carbon as long as its electricity is concerned as it's mostly powered by NPPs.

Renewable energy powered cities are being built that way to get cleaner cities and fight climate change. Paris will be low carbon the day there will be enough solutions to decrease the use of cars and public transportation working on fossil fuels. Hence why they are extending the network and electrifying anything or will move to hydrogen powered buses in due times.

You're not getting what I'm saying. The power grid is national, so there isn't such a thing as a "renewable powered city". However France's grid is thankfully very grid already. Yes car and heating pollution must drastically go down but "renewable powered city" is a stupid slogan that means nothing. Hydrogen is pretty stupid as a fuel as it's mostly produced by methane with huge carbon emissions.
Line 16 will be around 25 km long, not 46 😉
