  • Barbican Curator Eleanor Nairne takes us on a tour of her highlights from Jean Dubuffet: Brutal Beauty.
The exhibition celebrates French artist Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985), one of the most singular and provocative voices in postwar modern art. Railing against conventional ideas of beauty, he tried to capture the poetry of everyday life in a gritty, more authentic way. This is the first major survey of his work in the UK for over 50 years, showcasing four decades of his career, from early portraits and fantastical statues, to butterfly assemblages and giant colourful canvases.
Jean Dubuffet: Brutal Beauty takes place in the Barbican Art Gallery until 22 August 2021: bit.ly/3z9UkcJ

What a fabulous artist. JEAN DUBUFFET at Tate Vauxhall was the 1st exhibition I saw in mid 1960s London - it knocked me out. I was surprised by the next exhibition there - MARCEL DUCHAMP. I was mildly relieved that these 2 masters were not followed by Raoul Dufy. However Dubuffet remains my favourite artist alongside Ad Reinhardt....
Maybe I'll cycle to the Barbican & see if I can force my way in !

I'm writing an essay on Hal Foster's book Brutal Aesthetics and this was very helpful, thank you! It was helpful to hear more on the historical context through the curator. Great presentation! Where exactly is the Barbican Centre? London?

You'll be amused to know he made most of his money selling wine to the Wehrmacht.

    Pathetic.
But I will say it is inspiring because if this guy can "make" and sell this then ANYONE can do art and call it quality.
I went to this exhibition today 11/13/2022 in Seoul.
Waste of time but fun to talk about.
He seemed like a fun guy to say the least.

Pathetic? So how do you really feel? Who said he sold anything? Many, many artists sell very little during their lifetime. Why can't anyone "do" art? There doesn't seem to much room in your box for anything beyond whatever your norm is. That's too bad
