Ever since the motioning everyone's going to precisely call him "Greg Gibson the Home Plate Umpire"? There are much more home plate umpires than just him! He can't call two to fifteen games at the same time!
Vintage Gibby...he’s so freakin” good in these situations. You can bet your ass if Ross comes out another step he hooks him too. Textbook, take no shit umpiring.
I would point out that by the time he was "reaching for" the base, he had already been tagged out, with the forced out at the base tag. So, him reaching for and touching/holding the base wouldn't "magically" make him safe. I'm not saying he didn't interfere, just pointing out that the lack of him reaching for and grabbing the base is irrelevant to whether he was safe/out.
It is relevant to this play though. If he had reached out to the bag and stopped himself, he wouldn't be called on interference, and it wouldn't be a double play.
One of the rules about being hit by a pitch is that the batter is supposed to try and avoid the pitch. Being hit in the arm that is only slightly outside the strike zone when the batter pretty much just stood there should not be considered being hit by a pitch.
@closecallsports Gil could you please comment on Contreras' actions after the slide during the play? Is there grounds there for interference under the "hinders or confuses" part of the definition?
Baseball cameramen always miss the play. They change angles and you can't see what's going on. Leave it on the overhead view so you can see what's happening.
It. Certainly looks like Contreras was able to touch the bag but elected not to do so. And if he had stayed on the ground instead of popping up, he might have been able to remain on the bag too. If the standard is “able to” then that’s pretty subjective and I disagree but I understand the interpretation since he didn’t actually touch the bag. That said, we have a situation where Contreras didn’t actually make contact with the shortstop and is called for interference and the Toronto player the other night clearly intentionally kicked out his leg to trip the second baseman and is not called for interference. Seems like the opposite result of the rule that was established after the Utley incident.
you dont have to physically make contact to be called for interference. His actions forced the shortstop to make evasion actions or risk being taken out. Logically speaking if he hadnt jumped he wouldve been plowed into and possibly injured. So no making contact isnt required to intentionally interfere with a play.

The rule requires you to attempt to stay on the base (even if you're out). Contreras didn't attempt to stay on the base which is why it was an illegal slide and thus interference.
I don’t know why it’s so hard for the MLB to put a mic on either the crew chief or Home Plate ump to explain the call. The other 2 sports that I watch a ton, football and hockey, do it. I will always be a huge baseball fan but come on, do better
