Hi Matt, I do a lot of magnetos and I prefer to dress points flat and square with an oil stone, lots of mag points are so hard that I find a file hardly cuts them. But your right clean perfect contact is best, If all you have is sand paper just be sure to clean out the debris with points separated with brake clean or alcohol and blow out with compressed air.
The SUN tubes are neon. I have replaced some with dual xeon and if you want to experiment, I can supply some. I just got tired of being zapped by that 600V and that power supply is just so damn ugly. I designed a really high speed LED system that I use now and just designed which has an added feature of single/ dual spark so dwell can be read directly off the disk. It will also 12V now and will work with electronic HEI without adapter boxes. Check out my latest SUN videos.

I think if all you have is sandpaper you should probably wait until you have something better to use!
