Actually it was the belief in pagan Gods that built The Roman Empire and it was expanded under that religion. The Roman Empire had problems with Christianity and later started to loose battles (but they still held the Roman Empire for a while). I think the reason their armies were loosing was because the Christian soldiers didn't want to make sacrifice to the gods/didn't want to fight(they didn't believe in the emperor/empire) They were selfish, just believed that if they lived a holy life they would attain heaven....they didn't carry about the generations after.
