  • Episode 81 of Unsung Heroes, a series on HSG featuring some of the obscure cars from both the concept and mass production world which simply do not get the recognition which they deserve...
In this episode we take a look at a vintage car which shares many similarities with the best of what modern day cars have to offer, but with some significant drawbacks...

For many years I'was trying to figure out what car this is after I've seen it on the cover of a CD with really nice 30ies/40ies classic German swing music (Deutsche Moderne - Im Fahrtwind) - now I know from the fact that it came into the news that there is work going on build a replica. Awesome.

I agree with you on the Gremlin, but this really is a bit of an eyesore. Pretty fantastic stuff though.

Kind of sci-fi looking for the time, but also impractical, or bater said - "impactical". Zero crumple zone, the steering wheel doubled as an impaling stake and as a result the driver was certain to die even in a mild frontal impact.

I like this car so much. In terms of design look, it's more appealing than the 1930s Dymaxion Aerodynamic Car, Tatra T87. In my humble opinion, I'd go further, it's even better looking than the haled Phantom Corsair. Actually even more, the Jelly Bean designs of the 1990s, were really Schlorwagen wanna be's. But 1990s JB design never could cut it. Great vid. Just sub'd

Fantastic. The sidewind behaviour must have been adressible. It will mostly have been caused by the high centre of gravity combined with a too slack (original?) suspension system and the sheer size of the body. In those times you would not build a sporty suspension anyway because your teeth would rattle out on normal roads. Not to much ultraflat tarmac then. Even on the first Autobahn's one constantly went "kaduk, kaduk, kaduk" because of those concrete plates. Most probably the wheels where also not set wide enough. The front wheels had after all to move within the body. No wonder it was extra wide. Imagine a more compact and lighter modern interpretation though. Make mine electric! :-)

I would like to inform, there is a German association (Mobile Welten e.V.) which started reconsructing a Schlörwagen based on an original Mercedes 170 H chassis.
Not sure, if I'm allowed to share links here. However, you will easily find the page by searching for the association name. On their page, in the top menu bar, there is a direct link to the project.

so it's kind of like a tatra 87 ? speaking about it that could also feature in this series even if it's a bit more well known than this

It is the same time and despite of all that warmongering going on, techies of all countries communicated. The Tatra and the rear engine Mercedes both share a central tube frame- and of course the engine in the back - and so does the Schlörwagen.

Scrap metal was extremely valuable after the war - and many people made a living out of collecting it. That was the obvious end of that vehicle.

In reality the Soviets added the Fan-they wanted to test all the “German super weapons” like the B2 bomber the Americans took after the war... the British wanted to know what the Russians used for their planes so they stole the car just for the fan... they ended up destroying the car.
