    I live here in Southeast Alaska. Our #1 go-to is zip-up hoodies. Wear them all year. Zip-up is easier to on-off. And wet-proof footwear- cuz its wet everywhere most of the time. And, no- you won't rust, but you can wrinkle. Enjoy!

      In september the sales start in Alaska for the end of cruise season (in Skagway it's when all the Canadians start heading 'south' to Alaska to shop for Christmas presents), so some stuff can be picked up quite cheep. We even got stuff on the ship for like $10 because it was heading to Hawaii after our Alaska cruise, that was pre-COVID. Depending on your excursions, as mentioned, you'll need more warmer clothing, but in September, staying dry and out of the wind are often the bigger issues, so as we all mention, LAYERS! If you're lucky it can be 'nice', aka Caribbean winter, so check the weather and plan for that. My reference is my families Caribbean cruise in late November, coming from near Alaska in Canada. The general joke here is it's warmer inside the house in the winter then outside in the summer, so anything around 70f and dry is a nice day. My Girl Guides/Scouts when camping in the south of Yukon end of September (Whitehorse, inland from Skagway) and when the sun was out they had a blast in what was shown in this video, went down to 0c/32f overnight...and dropped to -20c on October 1st. Timing is everything.

    • @ThisHappyPlace_
      @ThisHappyPlace_ 2 года назад +1

      I think a vest would be great. I'm not really a vest person and didn't have any so didn't bring one, but it's not a bad idea. As for dinner, we just wore jeans every night. I didn't see anything about dress codes and it seemed pretty relaxed.

    • @rosemarysmith5967
      @rosemarysmith5967 2 года назад

      Fancy depends on your ship and where you're eating. They're the best place to check for that. The west coast, particularly the cruise area are much more casual in general on shore. Vests are loved by many locals...but do not keep your arms warm or dry. I love mine because I feel the cold on my core much more then extremities. A go to look for me is long sleeve t-shirt or flannel type shirt, vest and thin gloves. I get hives when I get cold so even a thin set of gloves can help greatly. Mittens are warmer, but not as easy to do things with. I also learned on a warm wet day the vest again helps with the core, but my arms (and legs so shorts) dry quicker then any clothing so depending on excursions, when checking weather seldom worry about pass through storms in the summer as I'll dry quicker.

    Thanks for your video. I watched already other video about your cruise. So here is my personal story with packing for Alaska.
    I will be in October 2024 on a 9 day Alaska with Norwegian Jewel. I'm loyal to Norwegian for many years, because among other reasons for me, you don't have to dress up, casual is totally fine. So, I did already a test-packing - I'm a bit over-planning person 😂. What should I pack, I was really worried about. Then I was remembering, what did I wear in winter back in time (when we have lived in Europe before moving to French-Polynesia 🌴🏖😎) within a 7-9 day period:
    Did I wear each day totally different clothes - except underwear and socks? No
    Did I multiple changes a day - breakfast, lunch, shopping, teatime, walking outside with dog, dinner? No
    Did I wear clothes several times in different matching combinations? Yes, I did.
    Is there laundry service on ship? Yes, it is.
    Conclusion: Why should I then change my practice for my casual Alaska cruise (even in specialty restaurants casual is fine)? Result: No change.
    Btw there are with nearly all cruiselines special offers for laundry or laundry service onboard.
    So, I started test-packing, hoping it will work only with a carry-on suitcase + personal item (very short time frame international to domestic connecting flight) and it really worked. 🤩My bulky clothes (incl a blanket over my shoulders) I will wear on flight to/from Seattle, that's totally fine. And I even can bring my beloved bulky cardigan (hand-knitted by my granny) with me.
    Here is my packing tip: I just put it into a empty zip pillow cover, so I have a cosy additional pillow, which doesn't count as cabin luggage and it easily fits between handles of my carry-on suitcase.
    So, that's just my personal story about packing. Maybe some of my thoughts are helpful to avoid overpacking, maybe some are not. It's just everybody's own decision, how to pack, what to pack and what to wear on a cruise. Happy cruising and greetings from Moorea (sister island of Tahiti) 🌴 🏖 😎 🇵🇫 🇫🇷 🇪🇺

    Great suggestions, but for this older gal, way to many clothes for me for a 7 day cruise and I have been to Alaska along with 4 day Denali. I usually take atvantage of laundry once on ship that takes care of a few things.That was years ago and much younger, and now going again and needed a refresher. Since I now live in Florida, if it is under 70degrees I am freezing, heh. I have already bought a few items on your list and Amazon truck is going to be at my house for a week, as I do not have much winter wear. I will say I love Wintersilks (lightweight). Of course they are now out of business, but they are a Godsend to layer under clothing. You can get knockoffs of some sorts, just not the great originals. One thing I do pack is my own hairdryer (travel kind) and a small acrylic makeup holder, magnet clips for the wall. Thanks for all the suggestions

    • @ThisHappyPlace_
      @ThisHappyPlace_ 2 года назад +1

      I wasn't sure what the laundry situation would be since it was only the 3rd cruise back after the shut down. It would have been useful for less pants and sweat shirts for sure since they take up so much room. But overall, I was super happy with what I packed. Hope you have a great trip and stay warm!

  • @donnam1257
    @donnam1257 2 года назад +3

    I am guessing you live in a warm climate since you mentioned the temp getting into the 40ºs, and needing to do a lot of layering. To me, it seemed like you brought a lot of clothes that you wore once or for a short amount of time. How much luggage did it take? We are planning a Sept trip, maybe getting a balcony, but I think it will be too cold to use it.

    • @ThisHappyPlace_
      @ThisHappyPlace_ 2 года назад +3

      We're actually from Pittsburgh, so we're used to the cold (though we despise it), but it was still in the 80s back home when we went so weren't quite accustomed to the weather yet. I mention the layering bc it would be in the 40s in the morning and then go up into the 60s and 70s some days. As for the luggage, this was just one suitcase which also included all my toiletries and other random crap. Also not a huge fan of rewearing clothes (but that's a personal thing) so you could take less if you don't mind that. I will say, sitting on the balcony when the ship is moving makes it MUCH chillier. We spent a little time out there, but mostly when the ship was docked.

    • @rosemarysmith5967
      @rosemarysmith5967 2 года назад +1

      As mentioned, some is choice. Along the coast the temperature can vary hugely between morning and afternoon, especially in September, and the balcony use will depend on which side, in which direction as to when you get the sun. Morning sun, if you use, bundle, sunset the same. midday sun is quite nice out of the wind though. I've sunbathed on mine in t-shirt and shorts to get the last of the sun before winter sucks the life out. September is a highly volatile month, just like the spring. 70s f, even 80s once the day warms up is not unheard of...or it can struggle to get to 40f...or feel worse once the wind and rain are factored in. The few video's I've watched, so far have all done fall trips, and have been fairly accurate regarding layers and when it WILL be cold (near glaciers, aka ice, or higher up, it drops about 1decree every 500 feet one goes up) vs at sea level near land. This is 40yrs of northwest coast experience.

The trees in the north would have started to turn though, which makes, if one does any of the altitude excursions (train in Skagway, gondola in Juneau) quite pretty. If Victoria/Seattle have another dry summer like the past few, we will be actually looking forward to the fall rains. They didn't arrive till November last year, you may have seen on the news as they washed all are roads away after such a dry summer.

      I grew a farm of scarves while living on the north, for as Taylor says, they are easy to take off and put on. A longer one can also be wrapped many times, or loosely draped. Don't go out and buy one though unless you get a cold neck, or don't like other things around your neck as you do need to be prepared to do the jacket up all the way. I also wear turtlenecks if I know the whole day will be cool...so I don't loose my scarf. I have wool ones, silk ones, wide ones, long ones, short ones...and then moved back south.
