I love that you say here that she switches back-and-forth from the operatic and contemporary sounds. That’s what I’ve been trying to tell people. Let the haters hear it!

    • @Aurinkohirvi
      @Aurinkohirvi 3 года назад +2

Yep, that's her very style! In everything else except in classical where she doesn't go contemporary style at all. Often she flips between operatic and contemporary approach in a middle of a word. I don't think it's nothing strange except... that people rarely do it, it's not common for vocalists to sing such a fusion of styles. She tends to keep the classical voice production when she sings contemporary approach too, so the change she does isn't actually that big.. I think it's mostly mouth shape and directing the voice more upwards when she flips to operatic approach.

Hey, mate! Nightwish and Tarja long-time fan/addict here! lol haha. Welcome on board the Nightwish ship of Wonders! haha. Loved your reactions btw, you've got a new subscriber right here and "like" buttons hitted!😊 I've seen most of your reactions to this epic, extraordinary, legendary band mostly with Floor on vocals and two with my dear Tarja❤ (including this absolutely beautiful one), and man, I'm so glad to see so many people on YT reacting to Nightwish and thus coming to know their music this way! Nightwish lore spreading all around!!! 🤘🖤Yeah! haha. I mean, you witnessed it, their music is so... God, no mundane word is enough to describe such magnificent otherworldly realm that they've created through their Music!!! Unique atmosphere, pure magic! Almost a spiritual experience to me!
Anyway, don't know if you're taking suggestions from comment sections of your videos, but I'd like to drop down here a list with some suggestions of songs by them with Tarja and I'd love to see your reaction and opinions to at least some of them😊. (I'm more of an "old school Nightwisher" haha, but - before someone misunderstands me - I absolutely LOVE their music with all three singers the band had, for imo each of them are equally amazing, great artists, just in different ways and styles, who brought special, individual and unique elements to the band that helped them grow, mature and develop their artistic identity.) I highly recommend that you add these to your reactions list as well (I'm sure you'll be thrilled!):
    1. ruclips.net/video/lwerko8X_aU/видео.html . This one is "Beauty of the Beast", from the 2002 album "Century Child". It's the studio version, 'cause the quality of the recordings I found are pretty bad unfortunately. But it's one of my favourite songs! The first long epic score before Ghost Love Score! Perfecto imo!
    2. ruclips.net/video/YODCM26JXOY/видео.html . "Ghost Love Score", also from "End of an Era", and the song, from 2004 album "Once". One of their greatest masterpieces of all times! Floor also sings this one perfectly❤ (I saw your reaction to Floor's version of this one and it's awesome!), though I personally love the way Tarja sings it better, I feel like she deeply understands the crucial importance of the instrumentals (especially the epic orchestral arrangement and choir), and the unspoken soul of the song; when I listen closely I feel she even seems to use her voice like an instrument, often blending her sound with the orchestra's, becoming one living soul with the music. It's just so perfect imo!
    3. ruclips.net/video/JYVl6MOZXIs/видео.html . This is "Swanheart", in live performance from 2001 dvd "From wishes to Eternity". The song is originally from their album "Oceanborn" (1998). Beautiful, stunning ballad song!
    4. ruclips.net/video/lZgkxgkH6I8/видео.html . "Planet Hell", also from "End of an Era" dvd (song originally from "Once" as well). Tarja & Marco!😍 They rock so freaking amazing together! 🤘
    5. ruclips.net/video/E_RRMRXJWxI/видео.html . "Sleeping Sun", also live from "End of an Era". Outstanding performance, beautiful and iconic song!!!
    6. ruclips.net/video/GG8UNbI2KM4/видео.html . "10th Man Down", from 2001 EP "Over the Hills and Far Away", and performance is live at the Summer Breeze Fest in 2002. Grand!
    7. ruclips.net/video/f3aM0XjYdBA/видео.html . "The Kinslayer", also live from "End of an Era", song originally from 2000 album "Wishmaster".
Now, since I'm also a Tarja addict😆hahaha, I followed her solo career far more closely and can assure she's been doing a stunning, beautiful solo work too. I just love her so much! Like, her operatic, expressive, strong, dark, powerful yet heavenly and pure voice, and the deep emotional magic she's capable of delivering through her renditions, have always given me goosebumps all over my body within the first few seconds of hearing her voice, brought tears to my eyes with every breath touching the depths of my soul ❤! I feel like she put an everlasting spell on me since I first listened to her, when I was like 13 or 14! Haha. A-hem... Sorry about that. haha
Well, as such a huge Tarja fan that I am, I must present you with her solo career work, where she shows much more of her power imo, plus she has much more freedom since she started her solo career, she can compose and write her own songs, play piano, sing however she wants to, and just fully liberate her truest artist soul.
Her solo musical style is quite different from Nightwish, although it does have plenty of the symphonic metal elements as main references such as some kinds of guitar riffs, the epic orchestral arrangements and her remarkable operatic vocals, but she incorporates aspects of many other styles, AND it's just as magnificent!! I love the fact that she just walked her own path and found her "artist self", never trying to copy or recreate her old days with the band, and I absolutely LOVE the results of her choices, I hope you like it too. So, here we go:
    1. ruclips.net/video/6T-Wyw9lYyM/видео.html . "In for a kill", from her 2010 album "What lies Beneath", but this is a performance from her 2012 first live-album "Act I". It's bombastic! Hear the lion within her roar!
    2. ruclips.net/video/K3QmQN7VSNI/видео.html . This performance is also from Act I, a kind of mixed version of two of her ballad songs ("Oasis" and "The archive of lost dreams"). Here she sings while playing a grand piano, showing some dramatic nuances of her expression and voice, kind of "gothic vibes". She delivers such a touching, emotional and beautiful performance! It makes me shiver and cry every time! I think only too few reactors pick this performance to do a reaction, but imo more should do it, it's a "forgotten" treasure!
    3. ruclips.net/video/jxqodwLVdcU/видео.html . "Love to Hate", this song is part of her 2016 album "The Shadow Self" and the performance recorded in 2018 for her live-album Act II. Outstanding, another breathtaking performance, one of my favorites!
    4. ruclips.net/video/tv4XWkTWQ0M/видео.html . "Undertaker", also live for Act II, and another track from "The Shadow Self". So epic and Incredible!
    5. ruclips.net/video/UGkbQj8e6JI/видео.html . "Crimson Deep", the song is also from "What lies Beneath" and this performance, from Act I too. This one gives me chills, I just love it!
    6. ruclips.net/video/TGjkjNXYBWI/видео.html . "Dead Promises", live at Masters of Rock 2019, and the song is from her latest 2019 album "In the Raw". Freaking awesome! 🤘
    7. ruclips.net/video/0QtdQQne2Ts/видео.html . "Passion and the Opera", this one is actually by Nightwish, but she performed this in her solo career, and this one was in 2007. Sooo amazing!!! I don't think she performed this one live while with NW, I'm not sure though, need to check this out.
    8. ruclips.net/video/e5zEb5xFlIE/видео.html . "Supremacy", it's a heavier cover of Muse song, live at Woodstock 2016. Great!
Since Tarja is a classically trained lyrical singer who often performs in classical concerts, reacting to some of her classical performances would be awesome too, if you have time for it, of course haha, AND if you're into some classical music stuff as well (I love it, I'm a metalhead but also a classical musician, so..... surely I love it😆). I promise it's worth it though, she's freaking amazing!
    1. ruclips.net/video/T2VIhB7q9uQ/видео.html . This is a czech opera aria called (in english) "Song to the Moon", from Dvorák's opera "Rusalka". Tarja sings it beautifully, so expressive, majestic and stunning!
    2. ruclips.net/video/kEFFp3G3cMc/видео.html . This one is the "Ave Maria" composed by Tarja herself. It's heavenly, divine and touching! 😍
    3. ruclips.net/video/761qOzEdl8E/видео.html . This german aria is "Mein Herr Marquis", from Johann Strauss' opera "Die Fledermaus". Astounding!
    4. ruclips.net/video/4NL6xSHWQv0/видео.html . This is Tarja singing Puccini's "O mio Babbino Caro". Exquisite!😍
Thank you, mate! Hope to see your reactions to some of these songs Haha. Be well!!
PS.: Sorry for my long comment, I just couldn't resist it 😆 Hahaha

This is one of my favourite ballads by Nightwish, and your reaction was one of the Best I've seen! Thank you very much, Sam!
The great thing is that Tarja has been having an amazing solo career in the last 15 years... Her voice is high but also a full and really powerfull suported sound (and throughout her career she keeps on experimenting new things with her vocals, including a haunting dark and lower register she can belt out), plus having a theatrical presence on stage... I'm really glad you liked it!
As a sugestion, I'll leave you 3 links for some essential Live performances by Tarja Turunen solo in recent years:
1st - An unbeliavable version of "Supremacy" (a Muse cover) Live at Hellfest festival - Very powerfull high notes: ruclips.net/video/wmMBI_0X3oE/видео.html
2nd - Tarja singing Caccini's Ave Maria Live, using a purely Classical vocal technique (she is specialized in Lied singing and chamber music by the Karlsruhe Music University, and although her vocals in heavy rock/metal are classicaly infused, she doesn't use a pure classical technique on those occasions, as you've noticed very well in this reaction video). When Tarja performs on classical concerts, she is much more foccused on those technical aspects of singing:
    ruclips.net/video/H_SZ7S2MtJA/видео.html
3rd - As an amazing follow up to the Nightwish video you just watched, here it is "Stargazers" in a Live performance in which Tarja surpassed even hersef in the studio version from Nightwish's legendary "Oceanborn" album... its simply a Perfect and unmatched rendition: ruclips.net/video/2Hl2ibaUvcQ/видео.html (starting at 40.56min)
I hope you enjoy these ones as much as I do! Cheers! \m/ \m/

Death makes an artist is such an under appreciated track in Nightwish’s repertoire.
It even got a single release in Japan and Finland exclusively.
The latter obviously because it’s an all Finnish song.
It’s definitely and unequivocally Tarja song as is passion and the opera from the Nightwish album Oceanborn.

How about Slow Love Slow with Anette, from Montreux Jazz Festival 2012: ruclips.net/video/6k1jeJBocb8/видео.html (if it was cold in the Kuolema... video, then here they are all melting through floorboards)
Or Anette's version of Planet Hell ruclips.net/video/z_SlXqJjIO4/видео.html

    Koo-oh-leh-ma te-ke (like in tenure and kettle) tay-tey-lee-ann 😂
What I love about this performance is that Tarja who always has a tendency to overdramatise and go full diva decided to be really tame and focus on the emotion. Also, huge props to Tuomas for this cello line which only adds to the drama :)

Yes, classical and contemporary fusion was what she tried in her last two Nightwish albums: "Century Child" and "Once". It's very typical to her nowadays too, that although she doesn't have vibrato or legato much in the song (which she earlier had), in a middle of a word, she flips between operatic and contemporary style. In higher end of her range, she sometimes goes quite operatic round mouth and vibrato to what I call "decorating" it. But she has that lowered larynx and classical sound present often even when she seems like singing contemporary style. I don't understand much how vocal organs work, but this is pretty much what I get. She sings a lot of Christmas songs, and although it would appear she sings a contemporay style song, you can hear the classical quality in the vocals. Rarely I don't hear any classical quality in the whole song.
By the way, is there a difference with legato and portamento? You said she kept it "connected" (like the bee flying) but didn't use either of those terms.
Thanks, I like to listen vocalists a lot, they mean much to me in music. If I would learn to understand something of the actual singing, so much the better!

I think you will like two performances that Tarja did at a church in Wacken. She sang "Ohne Dich" by Rammstein, and also a song by herself called "The living end". In these two songs she is accompanied only by a piano, a cello and a violin. Both songs were extremely beautiful. Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/uUAzRN9Co7s/видео.html It is a video with 6 songs, but in the description it has the name of the songs for you to click and be taken directly to them. I strongly recommend.

      @Aurinkohirvi 3 года назад +1

Oh yes. Tarja did carry buckets of more emotion to the song compared to the Rammstein version. Listen them one after another (I did) and that's what the big difference is.

Have you looked at the translated lyrics?
Once I only got to see my dream
    Kerran vain haaveeni nähdä sain
I did not feel the smallness under the stars
    En pienuutta alla tähtien tuntenut
I once got a cradle bar
    Kerran sain kehtooni kalterit
As a prisoner, I write a letter from there
    Vankina sieltä kirjettä kirjoitan
My God, let me come to you therefore why my children think of me
Luojani, luoksesi anna minun tulla siksi miksi lapseni minua luulee
In you is the beauty of the world
    Sinussa maailman kauneus
Which death made me an artist
    Josta kuolema teki minusta taiteilijan
My God, let me come to you therefore why my children think of me
Luojani, luoksesi anna minun tulla siksi miksi lapseni minua luulee
My God, let me come to you therefore why my children think of me
Luojani, luoksesi anna minun tulla siksi miksi lapseni minua luulee
I created my own sky here
    Oman taivaan tänne loin
    Let me get away

Hi. :) Can you react japanese artist Kokia? She has classical music education, but only in few songs she singing more classical/operatic, and made music in genres like folk, pop, indie, classical crossover etc. I really want to hear something about her voice from professionalist. Please react song "Il Mare Dei Suoni" live version from History concert tour 2012, in this one she singing more operatic, or song "Chouwa Oto ~With Reflection~" from the same concert if you don't want operatic singing (it may be just as "Chouwa Oto"). I recommended her on many channels, but she is not that much popular, because of it, almost no-one want to react her songs, it's so sad. :( Can you react her? Please.
