To me the song is about the demise of a relationship. How our imperfections end up tearing it apart, even though we desparately love the other person, even though we want the union of the woman and the man. It is that push and pull of coming together and tearing each other apart. Then ultimately realizing you gave it your all but you couldn't make it work so you have to part.
There is something so special about Peter Gabriel's voice and he sings with his heart in his music. Just listening is a pleasure. Moves your heart. He can be kooky, passionate, weird, thought provoking. He's one of a kind.
