I just got it. And installed. Aligned and run straight away. It honestly has an amazing spectrum, you are right.. and these soft bass sound. Deep and soft then straightaway fast and punching. Great with pop, rock from the 80’s which is what I listen the most. I tried also jazz .. good. About orchestra in classic music, honestly something is missing in the details. But as you told, it is a first great upgrade for novices. Easy to install and setup.
Great review Randy! My first cartridge, back in 1980, was an Ortofon OM10. The description you gave of the 2M Blue sounds like the house sound hasn’t changed at all over the years. For my return to vinyl playing last year, I went for the E3’s big brother, the G1042. Not a cheap moving magnet by any means, but a stunning cartridge, nevertheless. Happy record spinning. 😉
Hi I have been running the e3 goldring for about a year now grate value sounds grate punchy bottom end natural mids crisp highs veery happy with it. I also highly recommend this cart 😎🇬🇧
Goldring has some great history. I have a Goldring Juwel reproducer on my 1930 gramophone to acoustically play 78's from time to time. That has been one of my favorites ones as well.
Hi Randy, just noticed I never subscribed to your channel which is weird, I have been a fan for months. So here's another sub. Anyway, that's not what I wanted to say. I wanted to thank you for this review. Knowing what I know about your tastes in sound and my own purchasing this cart was an easy decision after seeing this review. Since oktober last year I have slowly been upgrading my system. Started with a pair of lintons, went with a marantz pm8006 which I could get at 2/3 the price in a summer sale a couple of weeks ago, and last Wednesday replaced the stock cart on my audio technica lp120 with this goldring. I up the mids a bit and lower the treble and to my ears this system sounds like magic. Tone controls for the win. No harshness, yet still detailed with a meaty presentation. It's this cart that tied it all together, I love it and cant stop spinning records. I have been looming at the nagaoke as well, but since you can get it included with a technics sl1500 where I live, it was an easy decision to go with the goldring after this review. So thanks, for giving us sound advice :D
Thanks for the review of the E3, here in the NL the cartridge is only 112 euro/ 113 dollar, so "very cheap" 😁 i bought one yesterday and i'm very pleased with it !
Totally agree and another excellent review. Glad to see that Sith Audio are sponsoring again :) :). I have been using this in my Rega P3 for some time. I came back to its sound after trying a few higher priced carts. Excellent value if yo ask me and the E series is a great upgrade from the basic Audio Technica 95 and its current versions.
Ich habe den Goldring E3 an meinen 1977er (!) WEGA P-550 Direktantriebs-Vollautomatik-Plattenspieler montiert. Gegenüber dem vorher montierten AT-95E ist der Klang wie aus einer andeen Welt!
Goldring is the only phono cartridge maker that I know of that makes entry level to high level carts in moving magnet, moving iron, & moving coil designs.
as far as I`ve read "Amazon Germany" customer reviews, this "E3" might not be supposed to be suitable for Thoren's tonearms, if you believe these customer reviews
I like the E3. Works a treat on a Funk Gett! Mine has now been retired and replaced with a VM540ML. The E3 is built by Audio-Technica and is based on the VM 95 iirc. Did mean to do a comparison but new gear day arrived.
@romanraszka6710 and it should be for over twice the price. I was told that the e series uses a modified vm95 generator. I. Ant remember who or where though.
It looks like the duster can also serve as a tuning fork to really dial in your EQ settings. Off-spec use, but if it is truly audiophile quality, then it should only add value.
I know why I subscribed to this channel, I just like Randy's style of presentation so much, so authentic, like the good buddy next door ... and all very entertaining and informative at the same time with a down-to-earth instinct for the essential, for me personally one of the best and most honest HiFi reviewers here on RUclips. Unfortunately, some of the devices that Randy recommends are very difficult or mostly not available for me in Germany and sometimes they are a bit more expensive because of shipping.
Man, thank you so much. Yeah. There are a few that can be had. I’d hope you could get Goldring in the EU though. Based out of UK. I wish I could get my hands on some Mission speakers.
@@cheapaudioman My pleasure, Randy !! The "Goldring E3" cartridge is available only from a handful of HiFi dealers in Germany. Also at "Amazon Germany", there it is even the cheapest offer for about 100 EURO (102 USD), but it is called "Goldring GL0058" for whatever reason, it's only in the product description that you can see that it's something with "E3". Unfortunately, this "E3" is not supposed to be suitable for Thoren's tonearms, if you believe the customer reviews ... but fortunately there are a few other very good sounding and affordable cartridges for my elder Thorens TD 280 MK IV. But there are some other smaller or not so well-known manufacturers who offer little or no offer outside the USA, or certain products are only produced for or offered in the USA, like the "Sony SSCS5" for instance. But that's the other way around with some products from Europe either. Ordering in the UK and having it delivered from there is currently much more limited or even impossible due to significant delivery and transport problems caused by the "Brexit" and the "Corona Pandemic" ... or currently by the war in the Ukraine ... at least that's how it's told or that's how they want us to believe it, and if products are rarely delivered, then the prices are significantly higher ... in Germany it is the same with all products imported from abroad, much of it partly just profiteering, but that's how it is in western economic capitalism and its "eternal growth", that's nothing new, but that is another topic that fills the entire evening.

For the money, it makes more sense to buy an Audio Technica AT-VM95ML cartridge and enjoy the added benefits of a microline stylus! Not only is the stereo separation and frequency response better but, the stylus will last much longer and will perform with almost zero IGD. Microline styli sit deeper into the record groove and can make older records sound quieter because they track portions of the groove walls that ellipticals and spherical styli never touch. More detail and accuracy then elliptical styli, too. I would persoanlly never go back to an elliptical stylus. They always exhibit some IGD.
Randy, I know you love the MP 110 (I have one on my Dual 1219) and now the E3 (which I just picked up). To your ears what makes it your 'newest favorite cartridge', lol. Loved the review.
Love your channel, great content. Can you talk me through interchangeable head shells? Need advice on what to look for, how to swap out etc I know it should be easy but.....
I was very surprised to find the integrated amp I bought at 16, a Denon PMA 300V, I didn't buy it to take to University, I was too busy working in the family business, so it just needs some cleaning of the whatsit that controls the volume. Still punches above if's weight.
Maybe they were making gold rings before. LOL. Just replaced my stock AT LP 3 cartridge. I notice the sound became more forward, clearer and louder. But less warm than the stock cartridge.
It sounds like you think the E3 is one cartridge to rule them all but I prefer high output moving coil cartridges such as the MC3 turbo. It's got everything.
Good video Randy, have heard good things about the E3 from other reviewers too. I have a much modified Rega RP3, that had a Ortofon 2m red, now 2m blue. I also have a Rega RP6 that had a Goldring 1006, then 1012 and just fitted a 1042 today, enjoyed them all. If anyone has the time and inclination, they can hear them on my wee channel.
Bought a Fluance 82. Comes with a Ortofon Red - not a bad cartridge. Bought the Goldring and.....yes, it is a better sound. Richer, warmer and without a noticeable loss of detail.
Nice review. Entertaining as always. Your description sounds reminiscent of the Audiotechnica AT95, which is a killer bargain. Oh, and it's Beck who uses the line "two turntables and a microphone" (in his song Where It's At), rather than the Beastie Boys. ;-)
I just replaced the at95 on my turntable, which I have been living with for ... 7-8 years? They are similar in their tonal presentation I guess but there is a definite quality difference. Based on the (very limited) experience I have in my home I have no issue recommending replacing the at95 with this goldring. One thing I can't say for sure is how far gone my old needle got during those years. I think it easily got 5000 hours in. This might heavily skew my perceptions so it's important info to share.
Hi, your review made me buy this, its great, better than the ortofone om10 on my fluence rt82 u also made me buy lol... but how does this stack upto the 2m bronze, and black.. i want detail, warmth, bass detail and sound stage.. what do i go for??
As you've done numerous best lists & this speaker vs that speaker, how about doing the same thing with amps of any type within a price range? The topology can be whatever it is, but the type of amp, just a power amp, or an integrated amp, or receiver amp should be the same. For example Denon PMA800 vs Arcam SA10.
I have e3 goldring on the fluance RT80. Had the cartridge before I had the turntable sounds great never actually use the audio Technica one that came with the fluence turntable itself.
I recently got a Rega Planar 2 almost new with a Goldring E3 for a great price, love this setup. Very balanced sound, I only heard sibiliance on David Gilmour records so far.
David Gilmour is a magician. Floyd is my absolute fav. His solo stuff is ok. On an island and no way out of here are good. But….. ALL of Floyd is awesome….. If I was stranded on a desert island wit only a Walkman and a choice of 3 bands cds it would be Pink Floyd , The Doors and….. Pink Floyd. I woulda put led Zeppelin in 3rd but…. A second Floyd cd is better.🤟✌️🍻
@@kristofvadnai7468 do you have tone controls on your amp? I my room with my setup (linton heritage speakers and marantz pm8006 amp) those are a blessing. I up de mids a bit and lower the treble, it fixes almost all sibilance I have experienced thus far. It didn't for Forever Young, but it was the first song I played after installing the goldring so that might have something to do with it. Now my music sounds detailed, warm and meaty, can definitely spark up top but has no harshness. I love it, and the tone controls mattered just as much as everything else.
@@HerrFinsternis I do, but I only use tone controls if the treble is too much or the bass is too low. Depends always on the music, normally its on 0 and is perfect. I find the system to be very neutral.
Hi there Randy, I currently have a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon with an Audio Technical AT100E cartridge. I'd like to upgrade the cartridge as I feel it is a bit rough around the edges, and the bass is really sloppy for my taste. I'd like tighter bass, better detail retrieval and an overall more balanced and musical presentation. Can you recommend some no-fuss carts I can install on my Debut Carbon? Debut Carbon is feeding a Sansui AU-555A which is powering a pair of Celestion Ditton 551. I'm looking to spend up to $600.00 AUD. Many thanks, Dana
That cart does not look like it's aligned properly. I have a Fluance TT myself. What protractor did you use? Those screws are way too far forward in that headshell. :)
I have the Nagaoka MP100 on my old Technics SL-D2 turntable and I like it. I do, however, like a wider sound stage. I think I might just give the Goldwing, ah, GoldRING cart a try. I have 3 head shells, so I can do a switch-a-roo easily.
Hey Man! What do you think of Tool. Being a metal guy and an audiophile, I thought they would be a go to? Ever listen to the track Tempest as a gear test?
Do you think that some stylus/cartridges are able to absorb more of the music and simultaneously react to less of the surface noise ? I hear that claim but have a difficult time accepting it
Fantastic review. Loved it. Although I never cared much for the E3 as it sounded too much like a budget cartridge, I do like most of the Goldring range of MM's. Over here in the UK the Goldring 1042 has a legendry reputation and the one to beat at the price. Superbly balanced with no sibilance and a BIG step up from the Nagoaka and the Ort Blue. If you can't stretch to this wonderful sounding cartridge you should try the Goldring 1012GX which is really kick-ass and punchy. The great thing about these Goldring cartridges is that the only difference between them in the 1000 series is the stylus profiles. So you can start with a 1012 and end up with the magnificent 1042 by just swapping the stylus !! Winner winner chicken dinner !! 😊
Ortofon engineers invested much R&D into designing the shape of their cartridges to be as frustrating as possible to guage alignment against a protractor.
You should try something with a smaller stylus, like the Audio Technica VM540ML. It really gets down in the groove, retrieving details previously unheard.
All else being equal, line contact does better but remember that the stylus is only part of a generator system which includes the cantilever, suspension, and the moving magnetic parts.
So much cheaper in the UK. It cost me the equivalent of 95 dollars last year😀 but it's the other way around with emotive equipment here. The ERC4 Cd players costs the equivalent of 300 dollars more🙁
Dammit Randy! I bought the Ortofon 2m Blue 3 weeks ago (love it) based on multiple recommendations after using my Nagaoka MP-110 (love it) for years. Now I feel like I need to get this one too. Why didn't you drop this a month ago? Seriously, quality content as always.
The Vinyl Attack also found the E3's soundstage more expansive than the MP-110. If you prefer rich full tone, more relaxed treble and don't mind the smaller image then go with the Nagaoka.
if you buy something that is recommended as very good today, tomorrow there will be something that will be recommended as even better ... you can be busy buying stuff forever if you make yourself dependent on something like that ... and keep in mind, if you hadn't heard about such new recommendations, then you wouldn't have this little "luxury problem" and would continue to be satisfied with what you have ... each of us hears and feels differently, we don't all live in the same living room either, so such recommendations should always be viewed with due skepticism and can only serve as a starting point for your own decision ... nobody can, may or should make this decision for you for many reasons, unless you get the stuff as a gift, then maybe ... that's how it is in the "audiophile" music scene ... but not only there ... "never change a running system if your happy with it" or something like that... I've heard that before somewhere ... rather invest your money in new LPs, that's much more rewarding and exciting
Hey cheap audio man I have actually asked you this question before but never got a response. I have an audio Technica AT-LP120 Connected to my receiver using line out and the sound while using the line one input on my receiver is much lower than if I’m let’s say streaming Spotify to my receiver. I read online that it just could be that the built-in preamp in the turntable is not very powerful so I was curious if I use an external preamp would I be able to increase the volume of my turntable instead of having to turn my stereo volume up so loud?
Had the same situation. Both the the Schiit Mani and Ifi Zen Phone have different gain settings. Set the gain higher for both. Wasn't perfectly matched with streaming, but closer. Keep in mind most streaming apps have volume normalization and records do not lol. I turned off the normalization and changed the gain settings to find the one that matched for the same album in both lp and streaming. Then kept it at that gain setting. Kept the Ifi Zen phono. Just be sure to turn the normalisation back on after you have it sorted. Both phono preamps are available on Amazon so you can see if it helps and if not return them...
Some external preamp let you boost the gain. But it is generally something people just live with. It's due to modern audio signal standards which range from 2 to 4 volts. Old days it was 1V or even less.

I have the RT80 and was wondering if this would be a good upgrade. Thanks
@@MrRamperez01 I personally think it sounds great I’m really happy with it and yeah I’m not gonna change it
I recently got a Rega Planar 2 almost new with a Goldring E3 for a great price, love this setup.
@@Audiodreamer192-24 I know, I also adore their music. All Im saying is the two new Gilmour records I have are pretty sibilant, mostly his vocals.
@@kristofvadnai7468 ya I actually haven’t put them on my Tidal to be honest. It’s just not the same measure of content.
The RT82 comes with a OM20 cartridge
One of the funniest EP so far talk about foot n mouth .. ha ha. But still a great review
Have you heard the AUDIO TECHNICA VM95EN? I was debating between the AT and the E3.
Can you check out the edwards audio apprentice ia1?
Hi there Randy,
I currently have a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon with an Audio Technical AT100E cartridge.
Many thanks,
Dana
That cart does not look like it's aligned properly. I have a Fluance TT myself. What protractor did you use? Those screws are way too far forward in that headshell. :)
I have the Nagaoka MP100 on my old Technics SL-D2 turntable and I like it. I do, however, like a wider sound stage. I think I might just give the Goldwing, ah, GoldRING cart a try. I have 3 head shells, so I can do a switch-a-roo easily.
Upgrade your MP-100 with the JNP-110 first. You already have the same body. Better yet get the JNP-200 stylus. That's a HUUUGE upgrade!
Sorry. Misspoke. I have the 110.
Hey Man! What do you think of Tool. Being a metal guy and an audiophile, I thought they would be a go to? Ever listen to the track Tempest as a gear test?
Do you think that some stylus/cartridges are able to absorb more of the music and simultaneously react to less of the surface noise ?
I hear that claim but have a difficult time accepting it
Out of all these in the comments including, Audio Technica VM540 ML what would be a great one and done?
The 1042 is not budget friendly tho, which is the point of the video
Cheapaudioman is where it's at ;)
You should try the 2M Blue PnP
The 1006 for me and you can upgrade easy
Bought one on eBay from Cyprus, $137.00 CAD about $105.00 US, free shipping.
Sith is back!
My understanding is that the Goldring E3 is just a rebranded Audio Technica AT95, is this true?
Are these actually made by AT?
lmao that joke is actually Beck but I initially thought Beastie Boys before you mentioned them. I wonder what we're mixing up?
Well I hope the cartridge wasn't in the box when you slammed it down! LOL!
Are you going to the Texas Audio Roundup in Austin this weekend?
I am
From what I'm reading, the Goldring E3 is a rebodied AT95, which is considerably less expensive. Have you checked out the AT95?
Yes, the VM95ML is a killer Cartridge
I don't believe that's true. I got a pretty big performance boost after replacing the AT with the goldring.
Granted, the AT was seven years old.
Ortofon engineers invested much R&D into designing the shape of their cartridges to be as frustrating as possible to guage alignment against a protractor.
I have been using Great Value to dust my equipment for years.
Matching your speakers and cartridge is as important as the amp - (horn low powered blah blah) I’m also vinyl psychotic and addicted to sound.
I use a swifter for my tv and radio
Really do I get a pretty pretty pony as well and also a suit of power armor
You should try something with a smaller stylus, like the Audio Technica VM540ML. It really gets down in the groove, retrieving details previously unheard.
Best cart for the money, IMO.
All else being equal, line contact does better but remember that the stylus is only part of a generator system which includes the cantilever, suspension, and the moving magnetic parts.
@@1mctous well, yes, I'm assuming that everything else is of quality.
at twice the price!
Exactly! Ellipticals just don't do it for me. Once I switched to microline and shibata styli, I'd never want another elliptical stylus.
£90 in the UK, first time ever that something is cheaper over here
So much cheaper in the UK. It cost me the equivalent of 95 dollars last year😀 but it's the other way around with emotive equipment here. The ERC4 Cd players costs the equivalent of 300 dollars more🙁
I think you own an rt83. 82 comes with om10 I think?
Btw love your content!
Yeah. I said it wrong. I did add a little note in the video about mine being an 83
@@cheapaudioman shame on me for commenting before finishing the video! I have a habit of stream-of-thought typing at times lol.
Goldwing Cartrige! Great, 6 Zylinder driven. But dont forget oil change. Ortofon is electric driven, like Tesla. Needs no oil change! ;-)
Funny! I I ordered this a couple of days ago because Techmoan mounted it on his Denon DP-47f. Can't wait to try it out.
Where it's at......
What do you think about the vm540ml?
It’s better than an E3.
Beck, "where it's at"
Dammit Randy! I bought the Ortofon 2m Blue 3 weeks ago (love it) based on multiple recommendations after using my Nagaoka MP-110 (love it) for years. Now I feel like I need to get this one too. Why didn't you drop this a month ago? Seriously, quality content as always.
Used a MP-110 for years, but I went from the ortofon 2m blue to the Nagaoka MP-110. Now I can’t go back, got a Nagaoka JT-80.
The Vinyl Attack also found the E3's soundstage more expansive than the MP-110. If you prefer rich full tone, more relaxed treble and don't mind the smaller image then go with the Nagaoka.
I love the blue too. I’ve got all 3 mentioned carts and they’re all good but in different ways.
if you buy something that is recommended as very good today, tomorrow there will be something that will be recommended as even better ... you can be busy buying stuff forever if you make yourself dependent on something like that ... and keep in mind, if you hadn't heard about such new recommendations, then you wouldn't have this little "luxury problem" and would continue to be satisfied with what you have ... each of us hears and feels differently, we don't all live in the same living room either, so such recommendations should always be viewed with due skepticism and can only serve as a starting point for your own decision ... nobody can, may or should make this decision for you for many reasons, unless you get the stuff as a gift, then maybe ... that's how it is in the "audiophile" music scene ... but not only there ... "never change a running system if your happy with it" or something like that... I've heard that before somewhere ... rather invest your money in new LPs, that's much more rewarding and exciting
Guys, for the same price as this Goldring, you can slap a JNP-200 stylus on to your MP-110's. That's a major, major improvement.
Hi sir
How are you doing today my friend? Can you suggest a amplifier for my b1+ for bedroom? Thanks in advance
