As a professional mechanic I have to say you should never ever use a steel tool like a screwdriver with a hammer to tap the fuel pump ring loose. It can easily create a spark and with a fuel tank filled with fuel it doesn’t take much to blow everything up. Always use a brass punch with a hammer to safely loosen the fuel pump ring and not create any sparks.
well yeah you'd be having a professional do it , so $650 is about right don't think they was trying to rip u off , considering you have to drop the entire gas tank, time , experience and tools all adds up but if u can do it yourself kudos
Just did some research, the new fuel pump you buy may actually have different connections than the old pump. This means you’ll need to strip wires which makes it a little bit more complicated. So when buying a fuel pump make sure to buy the whole assembly not just the fuel pump itself. The full assembly is the thing that holds the fuel pump as well as the actual fuel pump.
1A Auto treats the customer right. I purchased only the pump motor thinking why not save the additional $35 by not replacing the whole fuel pump assembly? Wrong answer. After reassembly discovered the top of the old assembly has a hairline fracture that was seeping fuel. 1A Auto exchanged the pump for the whole assembly at only the difference in price. I'm a customer for life.
+John DeShaw Thank you for your order, and we are glad to hear you will be a return customer! If you would like to leave us a review on Google it would be greatly appreciated. Here is a link to our reviews section. Have a great day! goo.gl/i5JFNY
you guys are awesome. i have to do this sometime next week and now it doesn't seem so daunting. i dont know much about cars, but apparently now i know how to replace a fuel pump in one.
I like your replacement method, but I would use BRASS tools and not use a electrical tool on the bolts, Brass won't make a spark, I help get a man out of a plant that did not use a brass wrench, he passed away! Thank Geneo
excellent. you only need to remove the three screws around sending unit to replace pump and you can leave the strap pins in place. your video was much more help than my shop manual. thank you
This was a wonderful step by step easy learning for me as I have never done one of these before I have a ford Taurus 1996 model and I am very relieved to know that it is not the biggest job to do in the car like I thought it was although I am going to take my lap top outside into the garage while I do the job so I can look at your video. Thank you so much for placing it on you tube.
Thank you so much for the video guys, very thorough and professional. Really helped as a guide as I changed the pump on my Sable today. Had no idea that you just pry to pump out after you take off the locker ring. My dad and I spent 20 minutes trying to twist it out Lol thanks again!
U don't, u have to press an twist counter clockwise, mine came out fine but it was hard to go in until I looked under it an saw how its supposed to go in a groove
Nice tutorial. Not a big deal but I Just noticed a couple strange things. When you first replaced the pump it was in the old sending unit(module). It clearly shows you putting a new module back into a new tank (looks like the old tank). My guess is maybe you saw something broke on the old module and decided the tank was in good enough shape to reuse as it doesn't look bad. One other thing, always replace the fuel filter when you change the pump. Not doing so will void any warranty on the pump. Really good video detailing the steps to replacing the fuel pump though.
The tank was fine to use. Yes you are correct, if the vehicle has an external gas filter, it's also a good idea to put a new one on. Thanks for watching. 1aauto.com 866-403-3393
This helped out a lot, did this 2 years ago for the fuel pump, but know it started leaking after I start the car from the top of the fuel tank what do you think it is ?
+Canadian kid Thanks for watching! You will want to inspect the top of the tank to see where the leak is coming from. It could be from the fuel pump gasket, or any of the outlets. Could also be the vent inlets/outlets etc. 1aauto.com
MrRufiman Yes thanks that's the White elbow 90 on top of fuel pump right ? Took tank out and found that the large rubber O ring to fuel was full of splits and rotten the car runs and starts much better now .....
me gusta mucho este video y gracias por hacerlo público así me daré cuenta de como cambiar la bomba de la gasolina de mi carro ford taurus los felicito a todos ustedes y reciban muchas bendiciones de mi parte y saludos

+Diana Armenta It may be stuck on from years of being locked in place. Once the lock ring was removed we had to pry ours up and out. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com
+Michael Juntunen You need to drop the gas tank to service the fuel pump. At 5:30 we show you how to replace the fuel pump. Either he's jacked up on caffeine, or he has Parkinson. It's amazing that he does what he does with his hands shaking like that.
very educational, Thanks so much 1A Auto.

I just found out I had a leak on the 3/8 plastic pipe on the pump asembly, will be replacing it soon.
MrRufiman Yes thanks that's the White elbow 90 on top of fuel pump right ? Took tank out and found that the large rubber O ring to fuel was full of splits and rotten the car runs and starts much better now .....
Yall moving so dam fastt how we viewers gon learn n save 💰 dam
+darius stacks Thanks for the tip! We'll pass this info along to our production team.
Wouldn't be easier to approach the fuel pump through the back seat?
no, because there is the bottom of the car trunk over the tank.
Don’t cut the car body to replace the pump. I have seen that, It doesn’t make sense to do that since then the fumes and exhaust will get inside.
Thanks for this Video, Please share more videos about sable 97. I appreciate all your work.
Best Regards,
Gerardo
Thank you for watching. We will keep this vehicle in mind for future videos.

Where are that man's safety glasses? Safety first guys. Good video 👍
+Edward Fraker Thanks for watching. Good catch, safety glasses should be worn while performing a repair like this!
Thank you. That was an excellent video.
Brass hammer and punch 🔥

thank you so very much
Great video Thank You a lot!!!!
Great step by step video. But I would recommend using a brass punch to remove the retaining ring. Sure Don't want a spark when removing that fuel pump
Thanks for checking us out and the feedback! 1aauto.com +Jeremy Chesser
It would be helpful to include the part number that you used. I plan on tackling a similar project shortly and found your video informative.
There's a link in the description that will take you to the part on our website. Hope this helps you out.
Is 2001 mercury sable the same?
Really good video
+Car guy Car Thanks for checking us out! 1AAuto.com
So I don’t know if you respond to comments at all but I have some questions about the fuel pump
+Anthony Seagroves We'd be happy to assist you. What was your question?
you started by replacing the pump-only but finished by replacing the whole assembly?
About how long did this take you guys?
Thank you!
Thank you for watching. Please let us know how the repair comes out!

I know the video description says 96 but would it be the same process and tools for a 95 ford Taurus?
+andrew Rayburn It may be a different procedure on that vehicle. We do carry a replacement fuel pump for your 95 Taurus. Here is a link to them. Hope this helps you out www.1aauto.com/electric-fuel-pump/i/1afpu00327?f=542235&y=1995#RUclips&CTA%20Comment&
Isn't there a way to test that new fuel pump before reinstalling it ? That would be a lot of wasted work if it didn't work.
You're not gonna replace the fuel filter???
thanks for the video.
Thanks!
same for both DOHC and OHV?
Thank you for watching! Yes the process will be the same for both the SOHC and DOHC.

Too bad 1A Auto has such a limited selection of parts to choose from.
No safety glasses or brass punch
I own a 2002 Ford Taurus with a gas odor in the cab, does anyone know the cause of this or what I need to replace ?
jordan owens, hi it could be a fractured plastic pipe on top of the fuel pump assembly.
Remember to disconnect your battery, kids!
+Joshua Crook Thanks for checking us out. 1AAuto.com
wow look how corroded the gas filter is , i would change that ,,
I’m surprised no safety glasses looked really dusty and rusty under there, I’d hate to get that in my eyes idk tho
+Pursuit of Hapiness 10 Thanks for the feedback!
My pump basket didn’t come out like that
I see the same tank on the car
I guess A1 Auto's tank may come with the optional rust Patina for numbers matching cars:)
If it's still holding fuel and is decently clean why replace it?
yall use the rustiest cars for your demonstrations....what state are you guys in?
Couldn't hear a word you said while that guy was filing that piece. Need to do a full audio check before uploading.
Same as a Taurus x ?
+Uriel Binzha It should be the same procedure on that vehicle.
Why not place the entire unit
My fuel pump isn't coming out the gas tank once i remove the ring and try to pull the fuel pump out of the gas tank... Please help
+Diana Armenta It may be stuck on from years of being locked in place. Once the lock ring was removed we had to pry ours up and out. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com
