It is for stability depending on how long your lash is will depend on the positioning of the back shot but just over half way down your lash is fine however in winter id move it closer to the float as you don't want your pole directly over your pile because of water clarity can spook the fishies. I use 1 or 2 number 8s my self but if its super windy could use a bb but I dont find that nessesary
