BGN, thanks for this concise and insightful summary of the 3.0 changes. Although I have not attended Gencon, my initial impression is that all these changes turn the balance in favor of the allies and make the game more imbalanced. I have played 2nd Ed. numerous times and, if you were playing with an experienced player, it is very difficult for the axis to win as is. I stumbled into this playing the game as UK coming from HOI4. I kept thinking this is WHY I play HOI4 because Germany getting the Suez so easily and sinking the Atlantic fleet would be the end of the war if the "Hitler really did want peace with the UK" theories are to be believed (which judging by why the UK government hasn't released what Hess offered I assume so). Same for India, honestly the map should just seal it off from Japan and force them to naval invade, the Himalayas are too much a block for them. It's silly enough Japan is at war with the USSR which again, would probably mean someone's head is rolling in both those governments to have that many fronts open.
The balance between historical accuracy and compelling gameplay is always tricky and different people have different tastes. I find Europe and Pacific 1940 has more detail. Maybe try those. Thanks for watching!
After playing a game of 1942 as is yesterday, I can see where the imbalance is. On germany's first turn I was able to take russia's capitol which was very detrimental for the rest of the game. Sure the russians got it back on their next turn miraculously, but in the end, the capitol ended up being captured ny germany yet again. I feel germany's borders are way to close to russia's capitol. Plus in sea zone 7 I didn't even use planes to sink the transport and cruiser that was in sea zone 7. I used the 2 subs in seazone 5 in suprise attacks. Easy victory for germany. Also what's the whole point in building industrial complexes when they can't be completely destroyed and rebuilt elsewhere? I counted when set up was done and I counted 10 of the 12 already used, leaving only 2 up for grabs. My opinion, industrial complexes should be destructible so they can be built elsewhere, or they should have printed the set up complexes on the board since they can't be removed anyway
Axis and allies is a classic And It has a great cinematic feel But non of them is balanced, and i think that the game by its nature is not perfectly balance able
@@BoardGameNation yes i just watched it Very interesting but since i got 1942 second edition, the game might be a little unbalanced but not broken, so im ok with the original rules. Since we are having a conversation can you please make a video on how to shorten the game? Variants like "2 victory city" or "1 capital" doesnt work well, since both seems too easy and accessible for the germany.
I still find the axis run away with it. I think Russian fighters go to Egypt T1? Is there a counter to Japan building a Industrial Center in Manchuria? Maybe I should shift british land forces to India instead of attacking east indies I dnk
I always play this mode when playing allies. If Sea zone 7 fleet survives, I get to attack Norway. Most of the time, I'll use the extra infantry to attack east indies just to steal the income for a turn or two. Otherwise, you have a nice stack of meatshields to protect your tanks for an Asia offensive. This mode also makes it more likely for USA to take Algeria on turn 1, especially if Germany botched a turn 1 attack on Egypt.
"Balancing" the game is silly and takes away its realism. WW2 was highly asymmetric in military and economic terms, and folks who want to make A&A more "balanced" would better go play chess or checkers...
Everyone falls in a different place on the scale of historical accuracy vs. game design. I enjoy the historical accuracies when they are possible, but I will always be on the side of great game play. :) Thanks for watching!
Then it doesn't make much sense for the German player to be able to wipe out the entire British fleet around it in turn 1 because historically that never happened and was never a possibility of happening.
