- For our final Fun Friday Session of the 2021-2022 school year, MSNBC’s Ali Velshi joins National Constitution Center President and CEO Jeffrey Rosen to discuss the #SupremeCourt and some of the biggest cases the justices are considering this term. Rosen regularly joins Velshi to break down constitutional issues in the news as part of MSNBC’s and the Center’s A More Perfect Union series. Velshi will also discuss his career in journalism and answer questions from participants.

It's odd to me people still debating when "life" begins. From a biological perspective life begins at conception (fertilization). The question I've always asked is when does a living fetus become a person? From my perspective it is when the fetus becomes sentient. From the research I've read about this question it appears that according to current scientific consensus it's between 18 and 25 weeks of age. In order to err on the side of caution I would suggest that a fetus is a person at 18 weeks and older.

I've always been pro choice though with limitations based on the age of the fetus and and condition of the mother and fetus. However, ever since I examined the constitutional reasoning of the Roe v. Wade decision several years ago, I thought it was a case of the court pulling a rabbit out of their hats. It's possible to be pro-choice and think that the RvW decision was fundamentally wrong. I think a similar rabbit extraction was performed in Griswold v. Connecticut. The court obviously was on a fishing expedition trying to extend the interpretation of some part of the Constitution in order to find a right to marital privacy. I think in both cases the court should have admitted there isn't anything in the Constitution one way or the other on these issues and kicked the cases back to the states where they originated (Texas and Connecticut) since I don't believe there were any federal laws they could draw upon either. I think by the court making creative decisions on these cases they may have set back the evolution of thinking on both their main topics (abortion and contraception rights) as to where they might be had the court not made these sweeping and logically shaky rulings.
