Just had to revisit this again to say how excellent Mr Hicks is in his rendition of this classic. It really doesn't get much better, or more authentic sounding...
You are one the best solo old-time banjo singer/players that currently exist in this generation. Such an inspiration for all of us banjo players out there trying to capture that authentic haunting mountain sound developed over 200 years ago... Start touring already!
Hey buddy great job. This is when youtube really shines. If it wasn't for youtube, this type of true talent wouldn't be recorded and remembered. Damn music industry!
I may have commented on this earlier. Forgive me if I did. I'm from southern Ontario. I have Celtic heritage, and look for Acadian, Celtic and Appalachian music. This music hits you in the Centre. It's real. You can hear the heart, the trueness in it. Anybody can see it.
I think I really should. The forest here is the northern tip of the Carolinian forest. Same as there. The rural people here I think are much the same. Sound different, but values are much the same.
This particular song is less celtic influence and more blues/African influence. Another name for this song is country blues by doc bogg. Plus the banjo is an African instrument
@@gavinmcintosh1668 Well thank you doctor Gavin, but I think it’s fairly safe to assume that this instrument has been adopted by those of Celtic heritage and therefore is recognized as part of that heritage . You know kind of like African Americans playing blues guitar . We associate that with African Americans, even though it’s a European instrument.
A porch is a porch no matter where you are I often play banjo and close my eyes and transcend into the old world Appalachia where I have never been it can be pretty transcendental and the music seems to sound like how I am feeling.
ernest: The grass is always greener on the other side. This kind of music and that accent come from the poorest part of the USA. The style of music is called "Appalachian murder ballads." I'm sure life was good sometimes, but I'm sure it was also grim sometimes. I spent some time in rural east Tennessee back in the mid-1970s. Good people, mostly. Kind, hospitable, and real. But the decades have not been kind to Appalachia, where life was always hard already. Rural poverty has gotten worse and is now compounded by epidemic levels of drug addiction.
I have heard Sarah Nichols and Cedric Watson do this song and now in listening to your version of this song I have to say that each of you bring a different kind of authenticity and passion that totally enthralls my heart. Thank you!
this video has inspired me to take up banjo. My dad plays and is the most notable pedal steel player in Minnesota. This song brings me back to when I was young listening to him play foggy mountain breakdown. Thank you for the inspiration!
One of the most impressive versions of D. C. that i 've heard so far. Three playing techniques i recognized: clawhammer, (P. Seeger) frailing and 2finger. 👍
Great Fretless old time banjo. More than anything it makes me feel great to know these songs will not be lost as their tradition that goes with it.. This is what made this great nation was the people who made this music. To see it lost to time would be a great loss...
over_in _the_valley Thanks, it's one of the more interesting songs I have encountered. I learned it from George Gibson of Knott County, Kentucky who folks can look up on the internet. He has an excellent album called "Last Possum up the Tree" which is available from June Appal Recordings.
Good Lord, son, you've got a fire in you! It's so nice to see that folks are still playing clawhammer after Mr. Scruggs popularized the three-finger picking style, good on ya!
Holy crap! That is the most genuine high lonesome sound I've ever heard. Nice work Clifton. I hope you're taking up a career - I'd buy all your CDs in a heartbeat. Your voice sounds so mature it's unreal.
If you have an open-back banjo and you want to practice without pissing off you co-habitants, stuff a shirt or towel in the the back and practice away. Or tell them to get stuffed, whatever works...
+Clifton Hicks Just wanna let you know I've been obsessing over this video for weeks. I play clawhammer but your right hand technique is like nothing I've ever seen. I love the combo of old time 2 finger with claw hammer. I've almost got the tune down but those brush strokes you do in between verses throws me for a loop. I fuckin love your style of playing brother.
I like that transition from two-finger style to a clawhammer style and back to two-finger again that's virtually seamless. I'd like to be able to do that.
WoW! Boy you played this so achingly pretty! You are wonderful! You could play anywhere with anyone! I'm so thankful for RUclips! Keep em comin and God bless you!*
Och! I was up there earlier this year sampling their fine whiskies. Glasgow and Edinburgh. Fine places. Please pass on my best wishes to Clifton, he is an inspiration. And if you lads ever come over to the UK, let me know! Great camera work btw. The video has a lovely quality to it.
I love two finger banjo I like it better than three finger. You did an Awesome playing it on that fretless. Your clawhammer I also like. I love the sound of fretless.
My friend told me a story about his grandpa's place was switch off place. He was sitting there sharpening his hatchet when the revenuers come a bustin in grab a bottle started yellin we got the evidence, granpa flicked his wrist the hatchet broke the bottle & the revenuers was just left holding the ring of the bottle they left & never came back. I've played that song for my buddy when we hang out for the evening in back 40

I utterly second that! Mr Hicks is totally awesome!!! God bless him for keeping me insane!! 🤣🤯🤣OMG he's good!!
Big fan of his he's so young in these videos
I've been coming back to this video periodically for over a year now. I love it.
....and then I went out and bought a banjo. lol
That’s good
I just bought a banjo, how do you like it? I’ve been really enjoying it the past couple weeks or so.
So am I... Its amazing
This exact video inspired me to buy one about 6 or 7 years ago. I'm still coming back to this video and Clifton for inspiration!
More than ten years later... And it sounds BETTER and BETTER every time I listen...
The background noise matters. It's what makes this recording meaningful. We are folk.
Ten yeas later and I still come back to this
That was stellar. I never get tired of hearing this tune.

Amazing then and just as good if not better today.

Yes indeed. Young man, old soul. Excellent.
I love the way the light changes as the clouds roll past.
I have listen to this song more times then I can count to. Not saying much.
Love you Clifton :)
wow....did not expect to have my face melted by this performance...hell yes!
It doesn't get any better than this! GREAT playing, Clifton! Peace and joy, Charlie
This boy is gooooood.
That feel when I'll never be American and play my banjo on the front porch
I'm not an american and i always play my banjo in front of my porch or in the streets
A porch is a porch no matter where you are I often play banjo and close my eyes and transcend into the old world Appalachia where I have never been it can be pretty transcendental and the music seems to sound like how I am feeling.
Never say never

Yep, theys a bunch of soy boys. Don’t worry, us cultured folk know and enjoy real music and will never stop listening to it! 🤟🏻
It's great to see young people playing old songs.
Don't know how I got here, but I'm glad I did.

very special benjo, I have never seen such before
So awesome to see young folks keeping the old stuff alive.
Definitely my favourite rendition of this tune. The mountain banjo lends itself very well to it!
You got it mountain soul!!
That is one hell of a beautiful instrument.
Greetings from Bulgaria, this is awesome music.
Absolutely amazing! Greetings from Serbia!
He plays so smoothly. Really like it.
All those people in the background didn't realize they were in the presence of greatness.
Wow! Dynamic skills on the banjo with all those pickin styles matched with a great soulful voice.
ive listened to this every day for a month now man.. spectacular

The soup and prawn hat really brings this all together.
swap and pawn
Haha wow, I watched it again in HD! Guess I saw what I wanted to see the first time.
Who the hell are you; I love this and you deserve to be on everything.
Blaine Gamble he has a page now. Search his name

Kasbian Vaulks Down here we prefer the latter option :)
One might buy a farm, the barn is an exellent place to practice, and the neighbours might well join you.
@@siggesaltens2663 My wife and I used to have a farm and I did play in the barn. The animals registered no complaints.
Yup, 2nd option works best for me. 2021 everybody has headphones and we have lots of earplugs since we like to shoot ;)
Amazing and talented little guy. Reminds me of my son Joe. Thanks.

I'm addicted to your rendition of Darling Cora, Clifton. Thanks for the inspiration!
Fanstastique ! Merci Monsieur Hicks.
Great, great stuff! Clifton Hicks is the soundtrack to watching COPS on mute while rooting for the perpetrators in every chase.
Wow! Great performance! Your banjo picking is flawless and I love your singing. I wish I could play as well as you.
Fantastic played on a great instrument too. Clifton Hicks are true.
Beautiful. Much love from Massachusetts.
Killing it! Gave me chills.........you just gave me an idea. I wanna be a badass too.
Brilliant and flexible with different styles well done, and good singing
Man, I love everything about this rendition. Pure as Maple Syrup!!!
love the way he dose that ol tune.............
So freaking sick!!!! I love the banjo.
Liking the vibe. The random chatter & evil sounding laugh @ 1:39 was a nice accident.
thank you for an authentic rendition in voice and fretless banjo of a folk classic
Fantastic music and what a beautiful piece of craft that banjo is too
Brilliant performance as always !....
Pure and simple. Rock on Clifton.
Oh my!!! Your music is great - reminds me of "fiddlins" down in Mississippi when I was a little girl.....and that's been a year or two ago.... ;-)
this is so inspiring, love the sound of those nylon strings
I like that transition from two-finger style to a clawhammer style and back to two-finger again that's virtually seamless. I'd like to be able to do that.

How the heck can people give a thumbs down on that performance?
Yep... should be able to give this one TWO thumbs up!
No matter what it is, there's going to be people that will dislike it. Anybody that says that ain't true is only kidding themselves.
hell, maybe they're just drop-thumbing along. sorry . . . i'm gonna go back to playing the banjo now
This is real and mesmerizing. Thanks for posting.
Just won 10 sets of strings, a banjo strap, capo and tee shirt from BanjoCafe. Time to build me a fretless. Thanks for the tune, Clifton!
Your style is awesome
That is a cool banjo. Great version of the song, too.
