This method is so last century. I remember my mother teaching me this way in the 1960's! Now I draw a line with a marker or chalk. I find it much more accurate and I don't have to guess if I'm going to meet up with my pin hole.
I learned to always tie off the end with a surgeon's knot. Interesting the "drill hole" about one eighth away from end of sew line. I've never done that. Goes to show you can always learn something new! I've been sewing for over 60 years now. I've always used tailor's tacks.

Ive always been told to NOT backstitch at the point of the dart and instead sew to the point, clip threads and hand tie a not.

Yeah, this is weird. Use chalk and a ruler, the pinning is extremely inaccurate. also, you have a hole in the final fabric!
