    I would have tried a tourniquet to improve the roots on this tree. Just tie a wire around the root just below where you want the roots to come out, eventually it will choke the the root and the tree will have to make roots above the tourniquet. THe benifit of this is that its slower and the tree will not be in as much of a danger of dying.

    With a nursery hinoki purchased in summer would it be best to repot right away to get roots growing in bonsai mix or leave in poor compost till spring?

    • @notionbonsai
      @notionbonsai Год назад

      Hi Dave! It is generally recommended to wait until the following spring for repotting. The reason behind this is to avoid adding additional stress to the tree during its active growing season. In the meantime, it's important to ensure that the tree remains healthy and well-maintained. Keep it in a suitable location with proper sunlight, watering, and care. 🌱🙂

    I’ve either not heard, or it didn’t sink in, about the sacrificial branch to thicken up a trunk. Thanks for the tip/reminder!
    My teacher once mentioned not to mess with the roots if you’re working on the top and vice versa because it’s too much for the plant.
    Did you do it all for the video or is that what you find works?

    • @notionbonsai
      @notionbonsai 5 месяцев назад +1

      I'm glad you found the tip about sacrificial branches helpful!
      Regarding your teacher's advice about not working on both roots and the top of the tree simultaneously, it's indeed a common practice in bonsai. Making major changes to both the roots and the top foliage at the same time can put a lot of stress on the tree, potentially compromising its health and vigour.
      Personally I have found that is is generally ok to work on both if the tree is young, I would not do this with older Hinoki and if you want to be on the super safe side only work on one at a time.
      I hope this clarifies things for you! If you have any more questions or need further explanations, feel free to ask. Happy bonsai growing! 🌳🌿

    I got a hinoki cypress yesterday at the nursery! And because it’s still spring I’m going to give it a prune, wire shaping and a potting. One side of my hinoki is not as colored as the front. I think it’s due to lack of sunlight. I think when it’s all pruned it should get sun. I have a question, at what temperature is too hot or too cold for my bonsai’s?

    • @notionbonsai
      @notionbonsai Год назад

      I'd advise waiting a year after repotting a hinoki before you style it or work on the foliage. The temperature depends on the species. Hinoki cypress is adaptable to a range of temperatures and can tolerate both cold and hot conditions.
      In general, Hinoki cypress trees thrive in temperatures between 10°C and 30°C (50°F to 86°F). However, they can withstand temperatures as low as -20°C (-4°F) in winter and as high as 35°C (95°F) in summer, provided that they receive adequate water and care.
      It is important to note that different cultivars and growing conditions can also affect the temperature preferences of Hinoki cypress trees. In general, they prefer well-drained soil, partial shade, and protection from strong winds.
