It made my side/medial glute burn. I just tried this with a dumbbell and placed my back foot onto a chair. Hold the dumbbell in the hand opposite the working leg. Keep the DB close to your inner thigh and pivot your working hip out while keeping the leg as straight as possible. Pivoting the foot of the working leg inward provided stretch of medial glute
you could just opt to hinge over a bit more. you also dont need to use a smith machine if it's difficult - use a cable or DBs or a landmine barbell setup, etc.

pros/cons of leaning back vs. leaning forward on the abductor machine? Leaning forward seems to stretch side glutes a bit more?
