    Can you believe this pretty lady just turned 12? For those of you who are going to ask, Cypress is in the pre-competitive category based on where her birthday falls. That is why she is dancing on flat. That age division (9-11) is "strongly encouraged" to compete on flat, which I HIGHLY agree with. There is plenty of time for pointe later on!

    Needless to say, she is very accomplished at 12. Great that her technique could look that good in ballet shoes.

    these videos always remind me of how valuable a good teacher is. katie's comments are always so specific and constructive, and she always makes a point of identifying what the dancer did right as well as what they did wrong. you can always notice the results of that teaching style when the dancer runs their variation again at the end (and then in the yagp performance clip as well). kudos to katie for being everything a ballet coach should be!

    Oh yes the picture moment! When I did Rhythmic Gymnastic competitions they always told us to hold balances so they could have a "picture" moment. Same with jumps, there should be a moment where they could take a picture.

      I second the picture moment. ITF Taekwon-Do black belt here. We are told to do the same during patterns. As in, hold the technique for a "picture" moment. This only applies for normal motion though.

      At DAB we train the students primarily in the French style (with some Cuban flavoring), but the students have training with several vaganova teachers as they progress through the levels. We try to build students who will be successful in any class or audition they go into, regardless of whether it’s Balanchine or Bournonville.. thanks for asking!

    I wonder, will anyone be addressing the hyper extension in her knees? I worry that it could effect the longevity of her dancing. She is a gorgeous dancer.

    • @LinaSingers
      @LinaSingers 3 года назад +3

      Her being this advanced and also looking very closely, I'm confident she is working on not locking the knees and pulling up more to combat that.

    • @oceanasong4777
      @oceanasong4777 3 года назад

      @@LinaSingers you could be right. I was a professional modern dancer, and I had similar problems with my arms. Hyper extension, no matter how much one compensates, causes wear and tear much sooner.

    Cypress is undoubtedly very talented, but I'd be concerned about her weight. I know dancers are encouraged to stay slender, to have the "ballet body", but this lovely child seem unhealthily thin. Anorexia is a real thing, too. I just pray someone is carefully watching her overall health and growth.

  • @oliviakirby1409
    @oliviakirby1409 3 года назад +4

    Kathryn, you're a wonderful, supportive coach.... but, and this is absolutely no condemnation against you... more and more these days, there's very little ballet left in ballet. In solos and variations students seem to be rhythmic gymnasts. Legs flailing, attitudes like bent penches, and such weak weak cores. Jamming into extreme positions and holding with poor placement, the extent of how bad their placement is becoming apparent when they can barely do one pirouette. It's depressing - no dance, legato or cantilena - when did it all get so bad?
