Stan, enjoyed your review and powerful examples of using the Luminosity Masks as you have. You probably have the best video at current explaining these the best way I've seen, especially about the contrast on the church section. Very well done. I'm a fan of L/NEO and it's not perfect, but it is certainly getting much, much better.

Your example is background water adjustments... How effective is the software to automatically select the subject for masking?

Hey, glad to see you have toned down the title and header on this. Luminar can be a good solution for SOME photographers but not MOST as you note in your closing statement. I fell in love with Luminar 4 back when its masking was far superior to Lr and I continue to support them but over the last 2 years they spent far too much time on gimmicky tools that often did not work well. The addition of luminosity masks indicates that Maybe they are getting serious again. (Luminar 4 even had a basic luminosity mask). I'm not sure if many of us photographers really need a dozen sliders to fix water, but it may be more useful than adding stars to highlights or goofy neon effects. Now if they could only add some edge aware masking.

It really depends on what type of photographer of course. There's no "one size fits all". But I feel like with this update and after speaking with one of the main developers, they are definitely heading in the right direction. And they really do care a lot about what their customers think and take their feedback seriously. For sure, some stuff is gimmicky for some users, while others might love that stuff! And not everyone will find that water slider for example useful. A lot of Luminar Neo tools are certainly aimed at landscape or travel photographers. And I think for a lot of these people, who might just want a photo editor that is easier to learn, it really is a great solution. And given the price difference with Adobe's photography plan, I would seriously recommend this to a lot of people. But if it doesn't fit someones style or workflow or whatever it might be, than that's cool too! What do you mean with edge aware masking? Like the hair masking stuff in Photoshop?

@SightseeingStan - for edge aware masking think about Automask in Lrc where the brush detects the edge between contrasting colours or luminousities. On1 has the so called "perfect brush". It is something that Luminar has always been missing.

Going to have to disagree with #8364 here on SOME of their post. Having been a world traveler Photographer for the last 28 years, I can certainly say there is no merit in saying 'most' photographers, won't like, or don't use Luminar. It's the opposite actually. Adobe has failed admittedly recently being labeled as spyware, costly monthly charges as a platform for use, et. al. and even absurd 'charging fees' to cancel subscriptions. For these reasons the CEO and others in their hierarchy are literally being sued for their greedy pathways of late. So with Adobe being who they are, they make a great product. Average users use less than 10% of the product as a whole. Can you guess how they figured that part out? Check the above comment. Additionally, there is a huge MAJORITY of users today who want fast productions and the 'slider' formula is a complete hit. Period, end, dot... Luminar has a competitive edge and now 90+% of software is functioning this way as heavy hitters. The comment about gimmicky stuff also is discernibly questionable. While it may appear to you that way, there is an absolutely remarkable amount of people who are learning how to use those tools in ways even I have never thought of and the creativity is endless so I myself am appreciating those creative tool sets - more and more.
What I would agree with however is that their AI tools, especially with 'content aware' 'GenErase' and 'Genswap' are ACTUALLY extremely poor integrated products now a couple years into the project. I literally think they fail miserably and haven't been able to get it to 'create' anything of value, purpose or function that I can honestly use. Overall, NEO has become a powerful piece of software and it's non-destructive editing is class - exceptional and editing and RE-editing is seamless. It's an amazing, user friendly, expedient and also in-depth piece of software in the Editing genre for Photographers. I go back to my earlier statement; people around the globe is using this beyond your understanding - simply because it's way cheaper AND way easier to get an end product/solution. Cheers.
