The Woman Who Nearly Destroyed The Monarchy

- Edward VIII’s marriage to Wallis Simpson is something straight out of a romance novel, but Simpson wasn’t the future king’s only famous mistress. That (extremely) dubious honor also goes to Thelma Furness, the aunt of the infamous Gloria Vanderbilt. The craziest part? Furness’s life is just as wild, if not wilder, than the lives of the famous figures around her.

Brilliant content, lovely voice..Scottish?

What a sad story. I do love how 11-year-old Thelma got her sister and herself onto the ship to be with their father, though. That was epic.
Heroic.
Thank goodness. What an horrible mother.
Thelma came off as the stronger of the twins. She got a small scar from defying her mother; as a girl, Thelma secretly roller-skated. But Gloria (originally named Mercedes), also could show mettle. When their mother found out that the twins finagled their way onto the ship, Gloria pointed out, what if something happened to the ship and she and Thelma would be left as orphans? That did it. From then on, their mother decided it was better that the girls also come along.

Great story! One note: Thelma didn’t leave Edward’s side to vacation with her sister in California for over a month in 1934. She went to NYC to support her twin sister Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt during her bitter custody trial for her ten year old daughter Gloria.
True
Gloria Vanderbilt's mom was named Gloria. I think that was the twin of Thelma and GV was her niece.
'Little Gloria' was Anderson Cooper's mother.
Correct
@@mrskenscott9643Yes , I watched his documentary. It was so sad .
My husband's stepmother was the child of estate caretakers on Long Island, and in the 30s, Thelma and her sister rented one of the nearby places. She spent the summer with Thelma's son playing with her and the other children in the neighboring estates. It was either during the time that the custody case was going on or after.
I love these personal little tidbits as part of the story. Thanks!
I had no idea Thelma's mother was such a terrible person. The thing with the birds was sadistic. No wonder Gloria had trouble in her marriage leading to the custody dispute and younger Gloria had such a hard time with mental health. A sociopathic parent and grandparent doesn't just cause emotional trauma, they pass on genetic tendencies for emotional dysregulation that can be incredibly shameful for a person unaware of why they think and feel such things.
Laura Fitzpatrick was the daughter of a Union Army general who married a Chilean aristocrat. Her daughter, Gloria Morgan, theorized that the combination somehow didn't "fuse" into an emotionally stable personality. The mother was very volatile and overpowering. The story about the baby pigeons was that Laura believed they would bring bad luck to the household. After the baby pigeons were cooked, the butler Fernand, brought in the dinner plates with red eyes. He too, had cried over their being killed.
@afquan9211 sounds like generational trauma. Good heavens, that family may have had money, but they were pitiably poor in love.
Child abuse in the elite.
@@weaviejeebies Genetics was at work here--not trauma.
@novelist99 that's what I meant, I should've been more clear. It's not just the crappy parenting and the wounded souls that the children suffer. It's the genes that predispose a person to have unstable emotions and imbalanced neurological function. (My dad's a sociopath. Everything remotely emotional either seems to make me want to rage out or cry myself to sleep. My mood is relentlessly changeable. Bring happy is like being high on drugs. Being stressed out is being on the edge of a cliff. I used to think everyone had feelings like that, but no, mine are super intense and all over the place. I don't trust anyone, I have very little patience, I've got terrible ADHD.) It's not just from the abuse he doled out. I've had to get comfortable with the fact that my system is wired funny because 1/2 of my chromosomes came from a complete psycho. During the era we're talking about, they had no idea about any of this. At least I have the minimal comfort of knowing why I'm messed up.
The teddy bear that Thelma kept, was explained in her autobiography with her twin sister, Gloria. In the book, Double Exposure, Thelma said that she'd be late to meet the Prince and realized he'd be annoyed. While shopping at Harrods, Thelma lost track of time. On a sales table, were miniature teddy bears. As a peace offering, she bought a pink pair, and a green pair. She gave one pair to Edward, who was charmed. He proposed that they each swap a bear, so each person would always have something from the other person.
The emotional abuse made her dependant on her abuser. Very sad for her. RIP.
I really enjoyed the video! Loved the background music. And appreciate the Narrator's clear voice spoken at a relaxing pace. ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!

The storyline was quite sad, especially how her mother 'tortured' those children.
Sad story for Thelma. Horrid, cruel, narcissistic mother
Mental instability can be rampant in those elites.

The mother also testified against Thelma's twin during her custody fight for Little Gloria.

A good narrator. A sad life for Thelma.
Fascinating . All that shines is not gold as the saying goes . Well narrated . Edward VIII was a total waster and the ruination of many lives .

Furness and her sister Gloria wrote a memoir called Double Exposure (1959).[1]
Furness died in New York City on 29 January 1970. As her niece, Gloria Vanderbilt, recalled, "She dropped dead on Seventy-third and Lexington on her way to see the doctor. In her bag was this miniature teddy bear that the Prince of Wales had given her, years before, when she came to be with my mother at the custody trial, and it was worn down to the nub".[1][23]
Furness was buried next to her twin sister, Gloria, in Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.[24]
You can see the real, constant sadness in this woman's face.
When a mom treats her daughter like that, it usually leaves scars for life.
A submissive and his dominant mistress.
I think many of the photos were of the identical twin, Gloria, who was the one who came off more as a lost, uncertain soul. Wistful. Thelma usually came off as more assertive and crisp.
In some photos, if you look at the jewelry, you can tell who is who. After meeting Viscount Furness, Thelma got a double strand of black pearls which were the size of plover's eggs, according to her niece. The senior Gloria, meanwhile, had a favorite bracelet of open, rectangular links.
People see what they want to see in photos.
What a sad life, and her mother was so cruel. Thelma actually pronounced her name as Tell-ma. May she RIP.
Well of course, the Spanish pronunciation, nothing sinister in that.
Thelma’s mother was a monster 🤬

Very touching and sad. So much deception that ruins lives. The heart attack at age 65 was emotionally induced upon a broken hearted lady with a worn teddy in her purse that perhaps consoled her.

The true irony as we now know is that Wallis did not really want to marry the Duke of Windsor but she was forced to maintain the fiction of the “romance of the century “.
Thelma had a lucky escape from Edward. Poor old Wallis didn’t. I hope Thelma had some happy years at least. But what happened to her son?
Apparently she did try to leave him, but he was a clingy and manipulative pos, threatening to kill himself if she left. At that time, and him being who he was, that threat frightened her horribly and it worked to keep her with him. If she did indeed treat him as badly as she was accused of I can't say I blame her, she probably despised him and felt very resentful.
Wallis was just as horrible as he. Perfectly matched.
@@tinydancer2951agree. Both of them selfish narcissists
She wanted to marry him alright - and be queen. After he abdicated she wasn’t so keen….
As a British woman I’d say we all gained - in the form of Elizabeth II .

Yes! I am from Texas and I think the whole world was blessed by the reign of Elizabeth II- a true QUEEN!!
It just always comes home to me how money and beauty guarantee nothing. In my humble opinion the Prince chose the wrong woman.
So Edward (aka David) should have stayed with Thelma, and abdicated for her?! Then they would both be happy. It's an alternate reality...
Although, maybe Thelma dodges a bullet.

Edward always had affairs with married women to keep his bachelor status. And these women had to keep quiet because they were married. Khan was a known playboy as well. These guys with money and power knew how to play the game! And the women knew what they were in for as well.

That was a fascinating story, I never knew about Thelma, and what a beautiful young woman she was! It’s sad that her mother was so overbearing and ruling over the lives of the twins, and I was delighted and amazed at Thelma’s cunning at getting them booked on a ship to meet and stay with their father, much to mother’s chagrin!! It feels that all her life Thelma was just looking for love, and it’s sad that she never really found true love, and the nearest she got was then stolen by Wallace’s interception…out of the two Thelma was, to me, the far prettier female, but Edward made his choice. I’m saddened to learn Thelma died the way she did, and the discovery of the little bear Edward had given her, which she had never parted with. Thankyou for such a well told story of a little known pre Wallace lover of Prince Edwards! How things move in certain circles! Without you, I’d never have known of this fascinating lady! So Thankyou so much! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙋♀️
Very interesting
Hard to keep track of all the bed hopping done by the Royals. Some cases their honeymoon period was even completed before they resumed their extramarital affairs. All during an era when sexual matters and discussions were repressed by the churches and a strict moral code imposed on the public.
My dad always said about the royals that they shared the bairns out a christmas .. meaning all the bedhopping results were assigned a family then
It was happening everywhere, no difference...
It is not just the Royal family who indulge in " bed hopping" and hypocrisy is not a good look.
I love your story telling!
The Windsors' relationship was no romantic, just abusing, demeaning and extremely weird.
Yes they were both evil. If Edward had been King, England would have been on the wrong side of WWII.

Beautiful story teller. Could listen all night. Sad sad story with no happy endings for anyone involved
Thus began her decent into the truly insane world of Royal life. Wow, that says it all😱
Wallis and Edward’s relationship looked like a romance novel until you find the letters from after their marriage and it’s turns out Wallis did not love Edward and abused him emotionally while writing to her former husband that she was forced l to marry Edward once he announced that he was abdicating to marry her.
Cover-up marriage.
Yes, Wallis Simpson did just abt everything to talk Edward out of leaving. She never wanted to marry him. Just like her others, she was just using Edward's money/title. There's been a couple of really good documentaries on Wallis Simpson. American & English intelligent services had open files on her. There were also "rumors" of her being born a "hermaphrodite". I'm still surprised she actually married him, especially since she didn't love him, but there was also talk of Hilter helping Edward get back on the throne after he won WWII. One thing is for sure, history is never boring!
I guess he must have enjoyed the abuse.. ?
Looks to me as he blackmailed her to marry him by publicly announcing his abdication.
Yes! That documentary is amazing! She was such an opportunist! She stayed for the money and fame. Her letters show how she didn’t love Edward, the poor fool!
Well told story in a well done video. The poor woman, to fall in love with a rapscallion like Edward (Oddweird).

Lizzie Borden's father killed Lizzie's pet pigeons too.
It's part of the theory that made Lizzie snap.
@mrskenscott9643: Personally, I think Lizzie Borden’s father had alot of screws loose, if not outright dementia.
DNA is strong.
Borden family believed they were being stalked and harassed by neighborhood boys...no evidence was found the kids had done anything. Around the same time a young woman named Bertha Manchester was axed to death by a farm laborer named Jose Correa de Mello who was angry at the Manchester Family had cheated him out of wages. Mr Borden also had hired Jose Correa de Mello and not paid him because of incompetence. Jose Correa de Mello was heard threatening to kill ALL the people he had grudges against. Which is why LIzzie was found not guilty.
She made so many bad choices, and suffered for them.

Can someone explain? I don't understand the infamous present from Edward was in her bag. It was a Teddy bear and 'revealed a secret' so tragic... it was a Teddy Bear!!!
No tragic secret. Just a sentence to pull you in to watch the video. It could be interpreted to mean that
Thelma carried a torch for him all of her life. Where did the narrator get this info about the bear, anyway......questionable.
Edward was a traitor and a disgrace to his country let's not forget that
What is really tragic is that any woman would allow a man to destroy her life! Simply stupid!!!!!! When women realize men get to choose you will stop playing the game. Also if women learn to manipulate men so they choose them who would want such a man. Wake up women! Don’t play the game! Depending on a man’s choice to validate your self or life has to be the dumbest choice you can make. I look over my past life at men I cared about and when I look at their choices and how they turned out I am so thankful they did not choose me I have had a wonderful life and I am so thankful that I made the choices I did make!
I think she was like this because of her emotional abused childhood making her feel abuse is all she deserved..also different times.. hopefully women are more enlightened now and do their own thing
