Platforms 1-12 are heritage listed. This is the first plan that was presented. The second, and most recent plan leaves the platforms open and untouched. The costs involved with this project are staggering. The engineering alone is around 50million. Construction over active train lines that handle over 250,000 riders each day. The underground rail lines, services, and utilities removal and re-routing would be many millions. Affordable housing, for who???

Which is a terrible shame as we are spending a lot of money to keep it in storage. I don’t mind the good lines park. I think it’s a terrible idea for the whole thing. The beauty is in the building. • @aussiejohn5835
      @aussiejohn5835 Месяц назад +3

@ronvorbach1464 The Town Hall graveyard was the first Sydney colonial cemetery that needed to be relocated as the city grew and expanded. The bodies were removed and relocated to Central and Rookwood when the town hall was constructed. Unfortunately, it appears that some bodies had not been removed. The cemetery had not been consecrated ( blessed) by the church (St Andrews Anglican Church), and the heritage significance wasn't recognised at that time in the colony, so less care was taken. However, the bodies were more carefully removed from the Central Station site by train from the then Mortuary Station to Woronora, Rookwood, and by road ( possibly tram) to Botany Cemetery. This was carefully considered and undertaken in order for the expansion of Central Station to cater to the transport needs of the ever growing city. The heritage status of the cemetery wasn't recognised due to the colonial nature of the city as the federation wasn't complete until 1901. The recognition of the historical significance of sandstone buildings and graveyards is a relatively recent issue with the development of the heritage registers and the appreciation of our history.

"Heritage" is about preserving meaning and history, not about living in a static museum or time capsule. The dynamic growth of Sydney is part of that history, which is why heritage can be preserved even while changing some aspects of the overall presentation.
I'm fascinated by the amount of affection shown to Willow Grove! It was such an ordinary building, unexceptional and not in any way special within the greater Sydney region. Nor was it historic or important within Parramatta itself - nothing like Old Government House and the far more interesting and older historic buildings and terraces around Parramatta.

I love trains & railway heritage,
sadly, they've ruined the Grand concourse that I remember as a kid.
It used to be a bustling place with lots of places to sit, the tea rooms provided sustenance before departing or on arrival of your trip.
It was a good meeting point second only to Town Hall steps,
The digital timetable may be convenient but has none of the charm of the old wooden boards with individual station names.
There is barely anywhere to sit in the main concourse & all the dayglow ad screens clash with the beauty of what was once a really charming space to be in.
Dismantling heritage features to make way for modernity is not always the right course in certain spaces.

The shrouding of the heritage main building by layers and layers of new infrastructure should be seriously reconsidered. There’s a lot to be said for preserving the scale and texture of the original Central Station building with the clock tower as a counterpoint. A more sensitive eye for the preservation of the classic architecture is really missing in this proposal. Given the scale of the proposed development there are numerous opportunities to create key vistas of the elegant old building without the over abundant layering of modern architecture obscuring jewel in the crown.
Additionally I hope there will be fewer place names with “Central” in the title. Perhaps place names honoring the aboriginal heritage of the location just as Gadigal was chosen for a station on the new Metro. Or something from Colonial times too. But the overall project looks marvelous.
I wish American cities were managed with as much vision and the execution done with alacrity as seen here. I live in California where projects tends to be proposed but greeted with skepticism because of the dismal track record of projects being buried and forgotten in short order or is way over budget or is poorly executed.
The city of LA recently completed a rail project that was requested in the 1980’s which was a vital missing link in the center of the city’s rail network. An absurd case of planners who don’t use transit. To travel from Santa Monica in the west to Pasadena in the east a distance of about 25 miles took me about two hours on three different lines. With the missing link completed it now takes about 90 minutes and two trains! That’s considered progress here! The missing link took over nine years and almost $2B to build adding only five stations each of which have very low ridership. And it looks pretty boring from an aesthetic point of view in contrast to the recently opened Metro line from Chatswood to Sydneham.
We could do with some serious self reflection here in the US while the rest of the world passes us by.
I grew up in Sydney so it’s wonderful to see my hometown become a world class city.

One thing that strikes me is that there is a lot of water lines, pipes etc implied by the plaza. The plants need watering and there is a water feature. They must avoid the mistake of putting this water and sewerage infrastructure under the plaza, visible to the trains. Accidents would flood the platforms and maininance would block the trains. They may have a hidden floor under the plaza for all the infrastructure. Those load bearing Columns will carrying a lot of weight they will need to be very dense reinforced concrete. Placing them on each platform will require that platform and its power systems to be taken off line. One platform is off line now, I believe, so hopefully that will not cause a shortage of space and capacity.

I live relatively close to Central. If this goes ahead it will be a nightmare for crime & graffiti. There are already "For Lease" signs everywhere on office buildings. And what about cars, buses, taxis, etc.? There is a major road intersection where they're planning Mortuary Station park. To get from the northern end of the city to the southern end is already a nightmare. This will make it virtually impossible. It's not always practical to walk or bike everywhere, especially for travellers with suitcases or travelling with special needs. I agree some of the open spaces can be made more visually appealing (the view coming into/leaving Central is pretty bad), but overall I sincerely hope this does not go ahead.

It seems like they are attempting to sell acceptance of building towers by distracting with emphasis on the public spaces aspect of the project.
Personally, I would rather look at the architecture of the towers. It will be the people brought in by both office and apartment towers that will be the major factor in revitalizing the area, and giving life to these public spaces. It should also make that end of the CBD far more visually interesting.
The area above the rail lines has always been essentially wasted space, and building above it is logical, and as these renders show, a great addition to the city.
I remember the bleak emptiness of the old buildings along Broadway, and how the cluster of towers along there breathed life into what is now a very vibrant part of the city and is visually exciting. The tower developments at Central should have a similar transformative sort of effect.

The design is ugly and impractical. The buildings are in scale too tall. The covered over rail lines will become a haven for rats, trash, cockroaches, dark, and longterm a homelessness haven.
I have lived in London, Europe and the US and think a large arched roof over the platforms would be better. Something similar to Cologne Railway Station or the major railway stations in London.
Trees growing on the concrete level above the railway lines is impractical and long term will degrade with water and moisture penetration the slab.
