Kyiv's metro was built (just like the one in Stockholm) with two purposes: transporting people in peacetiime, and to double as shelter during wartime.
Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the latter purpose also become a reality - the difference is that what was built by the Soviets to protect from western bombs, is now protecting from bombs from Russia.
And the Metro is still operating - despite the war. Thanks to @JohnnyFD I was allowed to share video from Kyiv Metro during an air raid in May 2023. The metro is resilient, it unites people and it saves lives.
But the Metro in Kyiv doesn't operate without foreign support. During winter months, civil power production is bombed mercilessly by Russia. Power Up Ukraine is an initiative from Vasakyrkan in Kalmar that sends power generators to Ukraine, securing people get access to eletricity despite the war.
