    I use a long bar no matter what the location, East, or West.
    Two main reasons. My back, Like Buckin said and it is safer.
    I find long bars to be the cats meow on step hills like West Virginia and nothing better for fat stumps on the West Coast.
    Only time I do not use a long bar is when I am climbing.
    If I could only pick two bars. It would be a 16" and a 32" and the 32" would see 90% of the work.

    • @gordonborsboom7460
      @gordonborsboom7460 Месяц назад

      When the engine comes to a stop before the compression stroke, it can rotate backwards, and it will grab the recoil. This pulls on the rope against the pull handle and can break off the cord.
      Pulling it out as it stops prevents damage to the cord and recoil. You can see the cord pull against his hand as the motor stops

    • @jirusjirus9322
      @jirusjirus9322 Месяц назад

      As far as I know, there are no ticks on Vancouver Island... the warming up of climate could change that soon.
      Here in Western Pennsylvania is an infestation of ticks over the past 20 years or so.
      I've pulled many ticks from me and animals. Had the bullseye, took antibiotics etc.
      Numerous people are suffering with severe symptoms for long periods of time due to Lyme disease, a few other bacteria are also causing illnesses related to black legged deer ticks. And different ticks are now being identified as disease spreading.
      They are migrating from South to north and west to east.
      I started my using peppermint oil last year and had good results.
      Depending on the density of the wooded areas that i am working in and brush piles that I'm picking up and carrying close to my body...i will re apply one drop of peppermint oil almost every 45 minutes.
      Started ingesting one drop of the oil in my super coffee daily.
      Have used the chemical Permethrin that was once only available to the military.
      You can look that up if you are not familiar with it.
      Prevention is the key.
      If you take off your shirt and put it on the ground and then put it back on when leaving... you're asking for trouble ( my first tick experience 10 years ago)

    • @HayChaffandSawdust1
      @HayChaffandSawdust1 Месяц назад +1

      Not to step in where I wasn't asked, but a saw such as a 395 Husky or 660 Stihl with a 24" bar is commonplace in the bed of a faller's truck. I'm no pro, but a 28" is a "long bar" for me and my area. Might find a 36 or bigger on a cleanup crew's/tree removal crew's saw for a last ground-level cut of a stump on a yard tree.

    • @nervfps
      @nervfps Месяц назад +1

      @@HayChaffandSawdust1 hey step away man! Helpful answers are always appreciated! So the east coast guys really go for the 90cc saws eh? They must be worth the weight for how much they chew through that hardwood?

    • @HayChaffandSawdust1
      @HayChaffandSawdust1 Месяц назад

      @@nervfps I reckon so; I prefer 70cc, but I'm just a hack cutting firewood, running sawmill, and cutting trees as needed; I have no experience with west coast or northern wood; I see one HUGE difference in the size of bar needed/used actually has far more to do with limbing than with felling. Logging (here), there may be 40" before the first limb; if the limbs are much lower on older growth, sometimes the limbs are big enough to yield saw-logs of their own. It always helpful to remember, but hard to understand (sometimes) how the "other half" lives. First time I ever heard of anyone baling hay at night, it threw my little pea brain into a tizzy; I couldn't comprehend humidity in the teens during the day and only reaching 50-60% at night. Heck, I'm hoping that humidity gets DOWN to 50 here tomorrow. With all of the limbs and how low we cut a stump on hardwoods, there's not at much need to hold the weight of the saw and therefore not as much need to rest the saw on a hip and fulcrum the bar around. Don't get me wrong, I long bar works here too... it's just not as common.

    • @nervfps
      @nervfps Месяц назад +1

      @@HayChaffandSawdust1 Ah okay I understand! If you don't mind sharing, what saw/bar is your go-to these days? Been looking around and I'm leaning towards something like a 661 with a 20" bar on it.

    • @HayChaffandSawdust1
      @HayChaffandSawdust1 Месяц назад

      @@nervfps I may not be a good example?? I have a 661 (stock clone); haven't even started it in couple of years; power-to-weight just not there for me; I have a stock MS440 (stock) that I like to run a 28" bar and a MS310 (fairly warm port work) that I also run a 28" bar; a pretty spicy Stihl 026 will run 20 or 28 and a little Stihl MS250 (also ported) that I run a 20" modified Husky bar (longest Stihl bar for that saw's mount is a 16 or 18". Those are my personal favorites; and again, I may not be the best example... I'm actually one of the ones with a bad back (injured in second grade...some days I literally can't reach my feet to put my socks on) that likes a "long bar" in our hardwood. I was just merely trying to give insight of why "we" run shorter saws with bigger power heads in our hardwood without attempting to exclude my own bias towards liking a long bar.

    The key understanding Billy is the process employed by a power saw user, nothing can be divorced from that (I'm coming 'at things' from a point of view of a tree and hedge guy with a bow saw and a slash hook). That's what we had got, but we were still legitimate tree people, it just took us ten times as long to do anything (and I could only look at guys with 12 inch chain saw bars withenvy). The thing is though, tree care is tree care at the end of the day. And graduation to power saws for me, has only enabled me to continue what I always did at an older age, and yet become ten times as productive. Occassionally though, I do look back to my earlier 'before' power saw days, and marvel at how little that one needed to get work done. Adding two stroke engines to it, has added all kinds of new logistical things to think about. However, it also allows me to operate at amazing speed compared to before.

      The Bahco modern bow saw is an implement of quite impressive functionality, for what it is. And that's a tool that comes completely out of the tree care world. The thing with tree care always is the tidy up, the sweeping of the floor, is where a majority of the work happens (there's no 'follow up' skid steer machinery, although I wish there was to help). One has to become one's own follow up machine. And that's precisely where though small saws and small bars come in, the .325 inch chain pitch and mini 3/8 inch tools and the rest.

      One thing that Billy Ray's footage demonstrates in his process, is one in which his modified 372 or 365 equipment just enables Billy to have run times with his power saws, that just can't be extracted out of larger equipment. And on top of that, larger power heads also have to be man-handled and physically carried by a human being. Where if you go much beyond 70cc chassis on your saw, you're not going to carry it all day long (and remained focusedenough upon safe work practices from start of day to end). You risk becoming sloppy and complacent, so Billy's smaller power heads can be carried with more ease and comfort. Which in turn folds itself into safer and more disciplined working practice (i.e. peripheral vision and awareness, rather than tunnelled vision and riskier work practice).

      @anglingmailbox3236 Месяц назад

      The only thing I would add in closing. It's the same reason to carry a modified 70cc Husqvarna tool chassis and long bar 3/8 inch chain. The reduction of fatigue over the course of a day (and yeah, things such as heat and climate all do feed into this equation to do maintenance of safe work practices at all times). I've often had to consume over four liters, or eight pints of water back in the days on bow saws and slashing tools (and don't assume because it's hand tools there aren't risks). It's probably the experience and knowledge of safety risk mitigation and reduction obtained on tree work where it was all hand tool work, more than anything has fed into my approach with power saws today. This why I carry small saws and big ones. It's only partly because the small saws are handy for ground clearance and clean-up (you are you're own skid steer machine often). You break down brush, timber, vegetation and bundle it to physically move it. A lot of walking. It's because of that long day endurance aspect, where one doesn't physically have the ability to carry an 85cc chassis by the middle or end part of the day. Is when you can start to reach for those 40 and 50cc tool chassis at that point (what the larger 80 to 90cc chassis enables you to do often, is progress earlier or 'roll' into tidy-up phase of your tree-care assignment more quickly. Because you have 'the saw' and chain you need, the tools that you need to get a lot of timber on the floor a lot quicker. Than if I was out there using 365 or 372 tool chassis, and taking me further into my day, to get my timber down.

      That's a lot of information there my friend...📜✍️
      Good reading
      I started climbing with no ropes and no power saw. Used to climb trees as a child growing up.
      Then i carried a little folding hand saw to prune out dead limbs of my favorite climbing trees.
      Then bought an electric chainsaw and ran an extension cord into the trees. Wow what a great way to get lots of branches cut.
      Offering help to friends and neighbors with tree work...🌲
      been busy ever since.

      @@jirusjirus9322 Folding hand saws are what I carried for years into the back country. For purposes of pathway maintenance for the river anglers and sports people. I adapted pruning saw blades of more robust type to long timber staff poles, to add to folding hand saw types. And what I've realized now are mini 3/8 and mini .325 inch are being used out there on poles for this purpose today. I have to be honest though, it took me too long to admit that I needed things like brushcutters, especially when it came to stream bank and river channel maintenance. A lot of it in agricultural context related directly to fencing and fence repair. However, it's always a hybrid. It could be fencing construction, part shelter belt and tree planting, part habitat maintenance and restoration, and often purely gardening, landscaping, decorative or property visual enhancement purpose driven. I tend to find that out there in rural areas one has to carry a lot of different hats with one. I've done a lot of 'landscape' reclamation using drainage pipe and heavy excavator equipment. Because that is what was going on at that time in eighties and nineties. Nowadays, at least six or seven days a week I'm on lawn mover equipment (and thats equipment I used to avoid, but now I'm finding it does link up with my top-handle saw, and small power saw work for property grounds enhancement). A lot of badly neglected property and real estate out there. I'd just as soon become selfish and go fly fishing, as I created lures and baits for lots of anglers at one point. But I have to admit, the tree care is different in that it makes a direct, tangible difference to peoples' living space and perception of that living space, and their abilities to manage same. Long story short, I think I backed from wilderness and agricultural habitats back into residential grounds keeping and suburban (the main point being, that when you come from the wild habitats back into human created ones, you get it more readily than the guys who focus on man-made habitat exclusively).

    I prefer a short bar simply because they are lighter AND run a shorter chain, obviously. The shorter chain means less time hand filing teeth, which is a win in my book.

      I think that was the point of the video; what works for you and is best for you is the perfect combination for your style. I run both/either and it depends on the task at-hand. If a long bar was best for everyone, the manufacturers wouldn't even offer a short bar... and t'other way 'round. (no snarkiness intended; I'm agreeing that you know what's best for you and your situation.)
