I was blessed to fly as captain on this wonderful airplane for twelve years, until I retired in 2013. What a joy, except that the pilot seats were hard, or at least less comfortable than on the DC-9. It has wonderful automation, it is reliable, powerful, and quiet. I love it and miss it!
Cool to see an A&P who's obviously passionate about airplanes. I'm an A&P, but only work on structures/sheetmetal. I was at L-3 Waco for many years and when we finished a P-3 mod I'd go out on the ramp to watch it's first flight. At first my team laughed at me (they hated airplanes), but after a year or so they were out on the ramp watching our work take to the sky, too. I didn't even know there was a 717 until I saw this video. Good stuff.
This is an awesome video! I love the moment of taxiing before the actual takeoff. It goes right past you. A nice thundering takeoff afterwards. Great job! Keep 'em coming!
I didn't see the description or title, but knew it looked like Buffalo. Old Flying Tigers was a treat place for plane spotting. My favorite, watching an L10-11 roll out and hearing those engine groan!
When i was little almost all we flew was AirTran, I remember preffering it to Delta, because the planes were cleaner and I was invited up to the cabin once as a little girl, when I was scared of a thunderstorm before takeoff.
flew on an Iberia Airlines DC-9 on my honeymoon to Mallorca in the Balearics from Malaga, a real treat for an aircraft enthusiast and on a Spanair DC9 malaga-madrid for a McCartney concert
I had great experience with Airtran. Went from Wichita KS to Boston. Flight got delayed for two days cause of Sandy but awesome airline. No probs reschedule flights
This is from a book. And it is a true fact. "Boeing announced it would halt the 717 production in 2006 when its current orders were delivered. Final assembly of the 717, which Boeing inherited after it's merger with McDonnell Douglas (Yes Boeing merged with McDonnell Douglas that's why it looks like a McDonnell Douglas plane) in August 1997, takes place on a continuous moving line in California at the Long Beach Division of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. Basically Boeing stopped making the 717 in 2006.
MD-80: An updated version of the DC-9 with a longer fuselage, new wing design and newer refanned JT8D engines (JT8D-200). 717/MD-95: Upgraded DC-9-30 with larger engines(BMW Rolls Royce BR715).
Very cool. Never heard of it myself. I immediately saw it as an updated version of the MD-80 (orig. DC-9) and a quick Google search turned up that it is actually as I suspected... sort of!. See link below. Q: What's the difference between the Boeing 717 and the MD-80 series? A: See Wikepedia article about Boeing 717 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_717).
HI! My husband took a AirTrans flight today and said the aircraft had broken tray tables, ashtrays in the arms of the seats and the flight take off and landing was rocky -as was the turbulence although the flight despite no weather issues. I see your video is 2 + years old and I was reading the comment thread. At the bottom of the page of comments, a viewer wrote over 2 years ago when somebody commented about also having a horrible flight, "don't worry, AirTrans is history by now" Well, I can assure you that as of 9-11-14 they are not. I was wondering if you could educate me on the Southwest connection with this fleet as my husband travels frequently and mostly on Southwest which used to be one of the only non- code sharing fleets. I'd sure appreciate any additional updated info on Southwest and AirTrans or just anything you might know about air travel in general these days. Thanks!
Eve Barrett-Drew Southwest airlines will only be flying the Boeing 737 which is a very proven machine. Although the interior on some of their aircraft may be outdated you can be assured that the aircraft is in very good mechanical condition which is proven by their safety record. As for the 717? Most of them have found a spot with Delta Airlines. I generally fly Delta.
I've been flying on commercial jetliners for 10 years. There really are no unsafe airlines in the United States. Some broken tray tables, worn out seats, and chipped paint are only cosmetic issues with the aircraft. Trust me I am an aircraft mechanic. Aircraft have numerous back up systems in case there is a failure in one of the main systems.
This was a business trip paid for by his company. He wasn't expecting 1st class and his company allows for business class or economy. However, the REAL reason he HAD fly in this tin can piece of crap was that he installs gaming audit software into casinos all over the U.S.A. In this case, one of their client's was a Indian Casino which was located approx. a 4 hour drive by car from Detroit Intl. Airport. Since he was working on strict deadline, he only had 2 choices: 1) Drive an additional 4 hours (after flying from Vegas to Detroit) OR 2) Fly aboard AirTran (a small regional airline (and the ONLY flight into Mantassee, Michigan). In other words, he really DIDN'T have a choice but to fly in that jalopy. Driving was not a option because he had to arrive on site ON TIME to implement the client's audit software. That is not Disneyland fella, this is called real life and the current sad state of the Airline industry.
are you a pilot or airline employee? Just asking because I cannot understand your reply. Don't you to know how to write sentences properly? I'm not trying to be snarky but the Disneyland reference kind'a hit a nerve as my husband has travel on these broken planes that should be retired to the airplane graveyard. BTW: My husband who standing here while I type this added "damn that sucker was rattling so much I thought the roof was going to rip off!" And there wasn't any turbulence blame that rattling on. May I kindly ask that you support your opinion on this aircraft with more specifics like I have?. P.S. I looked up the tail # on his plane and read about it's history. The 717 he flew on was 19 years old and had been sold numerous times, twice 2 of the worst Airline companies in history, Jet Blue and Value Jet. The fleet of 717's made the same as the aircraft he flew on were already retired and taken off the operational fleet list..... headed for the boneyard.
Mia OhMya ok at first: the 717 was desinged from the dc-9 so i know there must be many similarities, secondly i confirmed it with XD, thirdly i use my youtube name because i love the TOMBRAIDER pc game series so my real name is NOT tom, fourly don`t force somebody to create a yt name you wanna have for others and fithly get knowledge in things you dont know anything about it before you say something like that
Mia OhMya yes i meant fourthly an and i trust you for being 20 years older than me because everybody know that XD is a smiley that its laughing with rolling on the floor (or very loud laughing if you want) hahaha and i just meant i was confirmed it ( with or without XD is all the same) Oh yes.... planes are a good thing ^^
my experience w Air Tran is that they have rude employees.. i have a good friend who worked for Boeing when they sent the first order to them when they were Valujet. i LOVE Boeing don't get me wrong.. jst not all that impressed w this particular aircraft

Brings back memories. First flight I ever took to Florida was on an airtran 717 back in 2007. Good times.
Red Crow Me too! I took AirTran 717 to Florida but in 2011

Yep, two RR BR715-C1-30 engines, gotta love the sound of those!
I worked for AirTran for about 5 years. Flew on the 717 many times!
I love the engine sound!!!

Crooked Halo I don't get it...why would someone become an a&p if they hate airplanes?
This is an awesome video! I love the moment of taxiing before the actual takeoff. It goes right past you. A nice thundering takeoff afterwards. Great job! Keep 'em coming!
I miss airtran :(
ah the MD-95 beautiful
I didn't see the description or title, but knew it looked like Buffalo. Old Flying Tigers was a treat place for plane spotting. My favorite, watching an L10-11 roll out and hearing those engine groan!
Same here, i looked and thought “that looks like my city lol”. Sorry for the comment 7yrs later lol
Wow, my childhood has been over for far longer than I thought…

I have had great experiences with AirTran everytime they are and were always a great airline
When i was little almost all we flew was AirTran, I remember preffering it to Delta, because the planes were cleaner and I was invited up to the cabin once as a little girl, when I was scared of a thunderstorm before takeoff.
I can't wait to fly in one of these again on Saturday!
One of the last planes in the sky that is nice on the ears and is migraine-friendly!
flew on an Iberia Airlines DC-9 on my honeymoon to Mallorca in the Balearics from Malaga, a real treat for an aircraft enthusiast and on a Spanair DC9 malaga-madrid for a McCartney concert
Awesome video!! I was on N979AT up to Buffalo from MCO!! One of my home airports is BUF, so I am pretty familiar with the area!!
I had great experience with Airtran. Went from Wichita KS to Boston. Flight got delayed for two days cause of Sandy but awesome airline. No probs reschedule flights
717 engine sound gives me goosebumps
the avionics and engines!
I like 717's
I like this airplane seating. Easy in and out. It goes real fast. Faster than Boeing 737
best soundin engines! plus best airline!!! ;)
Kind of wish we were keeping the 717 when they make the full change over to Southwest
its like the MD-89
el comentador The original plan was MD95

Oh, and Mexico City and San Jose Cabo. Forgot about those.
Don't worry, AirTran is history by now.
Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and Aruba. That's pretty much it for them.
You got that right!
So I've seen the 707, 717, 727, 737, 747, 757, 767, 777, 787 and the upcoming 797 but... where the heck is the 697??
sounds like a 737 with CFM56-7B engines on takeoff roll.
Haha. I painted this exact airplane shown to Delta livery.
i worked on this ramp during -30 temp.

Im going to miss seeing the 717 AIRTRAN at buffalo why must EVERY single airline merge its great for business but boring for us plane spotters.
I was lucky enough to see a couple Air Tran Boeing 717s in Atlanta back in November 2014. It's too bad another one bites the dust.
I flew those to washington, DC ..... Too small to Travel in !!
Still a Mad Dog

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I feel a little better... ;-) How long have you been flying the "not so friendly (at times) skies?
