I must admit I'm surprised that Frank (my hero) didn't point out the phenomenon of wave interference patterns when he mentioned the function of harmony discovered by Pythagoras. Harmonious intervals have very simple regular patterns of repetition where dissonance is extremely complex, and irregular. It seems to me that the human mind would prefer the regularity of a 2 to1 octave for example, because every other wave is constructive. I'm sure he's aware of these relationships but he mentioned that it's still a mystery. Great talk! I recommend any of Frank's books to the curious individual. He is VERY skilled at helping someone to understand complex ideas. The way that he writes enables one to simply read a particular section or paragraph several times, and the clarity emerges. It's amazing!
This was a beautiful interview. I'm impressed by the humanity of Frank Wilczek and appreciate his effort to convey the achievement of his discoveries to us. The interviewer did an excellent job, I especially liked the question that wondered if there was an "aha" moment when professor Wilczek realized he had the correct equations that described the strong nuclear force. I once had a loosely similar question when I attended a lecture by the son of Tansing Norday (please excuse my probable misspelling of his name), the climbing companion of Sir Edmond Hillary who together were the first people to summit and return from mount Mount Everest. The son had recently climbed Mount Everest and mentioned the moment that he attained the summit. The question was what he felt at that moment. Unfortunately I was too shy to ask the question and no one thought to ask it.
