Thank for doing this, Foolish Fish, that was a nice surprise to wake up to. I also take your point about the covers - it is a very good and valid point... those covers and spines really do need work now that we know what we are doing (we had no idea when we did those). I think a cloth hardback with a dust cover would look great on them. They are print on demand which limits what we can do with the covers, but I think a nice cloth backing with a better design dust cover would be a nice upgrade for them. Thanks again!

Hi Josephine, it was so nice to chat with you earlier, I know that many people on the Foolish Fish members Discord chat already spotted your post on Facebook, and are very excited at the idea of a cover upgrade, even if it does currently look like finding a print-on-demand solution that offers cloth binding seems like it might be a problem right now.
      Best wishes to you!

    • @Quareia
      @Quareia 3 года назад +40

@@FoolishFishBooks yes, sadly the volumes are too big for the printer to do cloth hardbacks with dust jackets... but it has spurred Stuart into action to at least upgrade the look of the hardbacks and make them better looking. The size and page counts of the books (700 and 900 pages) puts them in the 'textbook' sizing, so laminate hardbacks are the only option. Anything else would make them hugely expensive which defeats the object of trying to ensure anything Quareia related is either free or affordable as much as possible.
Thank you for the work that you do, it is a great service to the occult world!

@@FoolishFishBooks Mrs Chompachangas is getting into bookmaking. I have a few Israel Regardie paperbacks that would look much better with a hardcover. Maybe Quareia could use a little upgrade, too. I'm not sure about the legality of replacing a book cover like that for personal use.

This is an amazing course and 10 years may not be enough. So, let me put this out there. I have these 3 books in my Library. I am half-way through the Appretenice Vol. I also have others she has written, which I need to re-read, again. Life is amazingly busy and I don't think I have the "time" and stamina, physically, to deeply dive in and do all the exercises. I can read - a lot - so I remain content to tackle these books and all the others she has yet to write - reading - living my life - and gaining what I can this time around. I am 70 years old. Never thought I'd get this far - so I just keep going and my library will inspire someone else when I am gone. I also have the Deck and her latest book on Tarot for the 21st Century - My first and ongoing love is The Tarot.

I have the kindle version (so I can have it with me) and I will be ordering the hardback version of the Apprentice (and the next two, as I get to them). I'm blown away by it's depth and rigorousness. I've always felt, very strongly, that any skill worth acquiring (including magic) is going to take a lot of work.

The Quareia course is currently being translated into other languages, among them Dutch. I have currently translated about half of the Apprentice course into Dutch, along with a few of the accompanying books by Josephine McCarthy. I hope to have finished the Apprentice section by the end of this year, which should give most people enough material for one or two years of study.

I have dyslexia and have found that this particular series of books works for me. The page (at 52 years old and with readers) brightness actually helps me in the evening when I read with artificial light. I wouldn't be surprised if this was taken into account when the book was being made. I also like the fact that almost all of Josephine's books have the same contrast and size font, unlike the too-small font other occult books have. Thank you for your in-depth review. It is lovely to have someone who cares about books and also the time to dedicate to sharing what works or doesn't. I'm sorry you received ruined dust covers from Amazon...now I'm a little worried and I think I'll make my own! Warmest regards from Los Angeles.

Yay!!! Thank you for doing this! I have been waiting for your review on Josephine’s Quareia courses, she is my favorite! I’ve been working through the apprentice book and to me this is the most solid, modern foundation I have come across. If a person wants to become a dancer they might be trained in ballet for strength and core skills and then can move freely into all areas of dance; the same for singing- I began with classical voice to build up technique even when I had a repertoire including all kinds of different songs. For me, Quareia seems to be this for magic. It does take a degree commitment but even working through the first Apprentice book of Quareia will help cultivate magical “life skills” that can be used while branching out into other areas of magic. I began my journey through Quareia a few months ago and it has been an amazing adventure that I found easy to incorporate into my daily routine.
I would love to see a review of her “Tarot Skills for the 21st Century” if you are interested. It has been the best, most practical and in depth companion to learning tarot that I’ve worked with and I would be interested to know what you think.

On a tangent side note regarding singing/voice:
I can highly recommend the book "Complete Vocal Technique" by Cathrine Sadolin.
For me it seems to be what Quareia is to magic.
No dogma, no bs, with safety measures in place.
Just here's what it is and what you can do with it (your voice).

2 months ago when i saw this video, i had no idea how much it would impact me... anyone looking to build a solid foundation in magic would be foolish (no pun intended fish) to not look seriously into Quareia. at the time i didn't bother to leave a comment or a like, but upon seeing it again, i just want to say thanks for making this video (and all your others to m8) but especially this one.. i just got her magical translation of the book of gates for more in depth study and i think it is called magical healing? also by Josephine.. i have been reading the magical knowledge trilogy as well and it is a good companion to the coursework. and a good look ahead into what the course will cover. luckily i have time to do all this now, i dont know how much longer that will last, but im utilizing it to the fullest.. im in no rush to brush up with the forces once again, without the knowledge and skills to be able to handle it without being terrified. i am making significant progress though.
Blessings to you as always m8 :)

Yes I'm getting it too. So that when I finish the kundalini shiz, I can pick it back up. I'm fighting for my life day to day.... But I will plug along when I can. I started out gung ho and got a large part of the apprentice section done (with notes, and online notes):(I literally bought a new computer and learned a word program just so I could do the exercise note experiences to turn in), but kundalini has taken all my force to manage. So I had to set everything else in life aside. I'm getting the books because I will finish them no matter what. I made up my mind and I don't care if it takes, ten or even fifteen years.... Plus I have a magick collection that I am going to give to my son when he is mature enough (so I'll need 2, or 4 of the decks of cards). These would be amazing for that when he turns of liable age to be honest enough to better his life. We all go through the first stage in ignorance right? Or was that just me haha?

I have seen these books on Amazon a few day ago and was very intrigued, so I'm happy you made this video to show off the actual physical copies of the books and explain what they're essentially about. The biggest problem I have with just "blindly" working through a curriculum of magick is that I'm worried about possibly getting myself into working with entities and forces that turn out to be of malicious or parasitic nature. You know, like "whoopsie doopsie, now you're subject to the will of a god of wrath" or something along that line. It seems like I'm not alone with these concerns, perhaps it is worth giving your perspective on the matter.

The course is set up with the absolute beginner in mind, giving you all the basic training you need and in the quantity you need before you start doing anything that might by more tricky so that you are always equipped with the inner resources required to deal with new situation.

Personally I love your attention to the details of the books you “review” or rather I would say “introduce.” I relate books as an immersion experience and these details matter to me quite a lot. I cannot read electronic stuff and I really won’t deal with books that are poorly published if there is a choice. If anyone wishes I am sure they can find a more thorough content review. That’s what I do if I have more questions--seriously we’re going to do that anyway I should think. You have an excellent knack for getting quality material on the radar and I am great full for it.
If anyone has read this far the “Niles Heckman” podcast/RUclips channel episode 80 has a one hour interview of the author on her work and is obviously worth a listen.

Granted, it is. magical training and has lessons for us, as magical students, but I wonder if some of my trouble was the occasional glare causing omitted words and phrases. the time will pass anyway - quite possibly another 30 or 40 years. Not neccesarily promoting this approach (in fact i don't even practice 'magic' as such any more) but what Mcarthy says is basically true - “Remember, twenty minutes a day of practice is far better than one or more hours once or twice a week. Little and often is the key.” But if what you are doing is not allowing you to increase your energy hen its worth re-evaluating what you are doing. I know 65 year olds who lift weights and do half marathons - and that's just physical stuff.

They are wonderful powerful cards that are not structured like a normal tarot deck. So rather than suits they are based on the type of energies a magician would encounter. You can use them for mundane readings but their prime purpose is to be used with the course. As you work through it you will work with some of the concepts covered by the cards and your understanding of them will deepen. I bought the first deck published in 2014 and i would say now i understand them! So there is a lot to be discovered there.

I have all 3 of these amazing works and am astiduously following the fascinating and rather (at times) scary course.
however due to the recent heatwave (i guess) 2 of my books have 'popped open' along the spine where it glues to the paper stack, I guess the glue just melted / disintegrated in the heat, and the pages are no longer secure which is a great shame.
i really don't want the pages falling out everywhere :(

Very different approach. Denning and Phillips follow an established curriculum from an order that appeared at around the same time as the Golden Dawn (Aurum Solis) which is still going today. They incorporate a lot of Hebrew and Greek magic. Josephine is self-taught, and you might say that while her method retains elements of ceremonial magic, it is closer to shamanism than to lodge magic - more free-style.

Wow that's actually the most helpful comment so far! So much of the Hebrew inspired ceremonial-type magic has felt stiff and distant to me, it's been hard to commit. Both wanting the discipline to just *do the damn LBRP*, but also feeling my magic is borne of a wilder state. "Free form shamanism" sounds like the perfect mix between Hermes and Hekate, as it were.

I was re-reading the gospel of Matthew (my favourite) just earlier today... why would you assume that I've "turned my back" on the Bible? The Bible is one of the most empowering esoteric books out there, and the first one I read, and still my favourite to this day.
Now, that said, I don't confuse the Bible with the institutions that claim to represent it while shamelessly abusing and perverting its message, of course, basically using it to justify bigotry, tribe mentality, and fear, all very useful for keeping a people under control, but that's no fault of the Bible's... It's the organised forms of regulated church that are what the Bible describe as the Antichrist, not the Bible...

1At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. 2When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.”
3He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread-which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests. 5Or haven’t you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath and yet are innocent? 6I tell you that something greater than the temple is here. 7If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ a you would not have condemned the innocent. 8For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
9Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue, 10and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to bring charges against Jesus, they asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”
11He said to them, “If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? 12How much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”
13Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other. 14But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.
