Michael Steeves yeah man, you ever heard of finding a table just lying around in the dirt? Of course not, they are rarer than all the precious gems and it’s not worth breaking your priceless IKEA furniture for the sake of some lousy gold!
You know the man is more dedicated to the videos than the money he makes from them when he literally spends $12,000 dollars to make a ball out of gold, and he doesn't even bother to make it ten minutes long OR even make the title really click baity
@Ash Wolf yeah i know he keeps it, but this is gold he had laying around and even though he didn't just buy it recently he still technically spent 12 grand on making a ball simply from the value of the gold, yet he didnt bother to lengthen it out just that little bit more to make some extra cash even though it would have been super easy too. that shows just how little he cares for making extra money from the channel, all he wants for this channel is quality content to educate these people and to entertain us all while doing so.
Hi Cody, I have a suggestion since you have a brand new shiny anvil. I'm an aspiring blacksmith and a good idea is to get a 12" length of a log of maple or another impact resistant wood and mount your anvil on it. It doubles as a shock adsorbent and non-slip base so it doesn't slide around on the concrete.
while capitalism is a deeply flawed system that results in many people sitting on massive amounts of money while others starve you shouldn't be going after Cody's lab. the large amounts of gold in his videos is one of his biggest draws and he is constantly refining and changing the form of his gold putting it to good use time and again to make his living and not just leaving it lying around. the real examples of why capitalism is a flawed system are the people who were born with millions or billions of dollars behind them and make money just to make more money sitting on it and not putting it to any good use all the while insisting they got there by hard work. those people could end almost everyone's money problems in the us but don't. Cody has genuinely worked hard to get where he is and is a much better example of capitalism's good points rather than its flaws.
it's not like he's gonna put it on his shelf and leave it forever. His only cost of gold in this video is like a dollar's worth of gold that gets pounded onto the anvil surface or hammers and lost as a tiny amount of dust. Everything else will just get re-used in another experiment.
Only Cody would have a stash of Gold Bullion hidden to make a smashed Gold Ball. Probably one of the main reason I watch his channel! You can't beat what this guy is going to do next! Great Job Cody!!!
A competition between Cody’s Lab and Action Lab. I think this one goes to Cody. Made his own foil out of pure gold, then hammered it into a ball!!! Only Cody would do that! I love it
The thing I love about Cody is while everyone is freaking out about the ‘worth’ of the gold he treats it like any other element with interesting natural properties and awesome scientific uses. At the end of the day it’s the facts that this element is a tremendously good conductor, can be pressed extremely thin, can reflect IR radiation at micron thicknesses among others that truely make it valuable to humans, not the fact that bankers pass around paper exchanging ownership of it while the element sits locked up in a dark room all day.
Makes me wonder if there are any elements with as many interesting unique properties as gold which we take for granted because of their common-ness. Commonality? Because of how common they are.
Historically gold's properties had fuck all to do with its value. Relative scarcity, distinctive appearance and corrosion resistance made it a good exchange medium, so its value is literally just a function of other people valuing it too.
Admittedly also a bit fascinating that because of the the value of the material, the "color" or appearance of the material itself is also desirable as a sign of 'prosperity' even when using other materials.
Yes, I think you may be to glib in your guess of why it rattles. Your acuity is shown to be superb in your videos, but why not cryo it and saw in half. Why would it cold weld so readily, except at a few llayers? Same physics,, differing chemistry?
TheKnaeckebrot it's 100 poké to the dollar, same(ish) rate as yen to dollar, which always makes me feel bad when the little kids try and fight me and hand over a nickel when they lose.

Action Lab said first but in the end you where first solid gold ball made by hand and man you did amazing and put some amazing work out there into the world! Thank you!
the harder the metal, the brighter the ring, so tungsten carbide would make the best sounding bell, but it'd be so brittle that it'd probably vibrate itself to pieces, by contrast gold is soft so it'd have quite a dull ring, but it'd still be interesting to have documented proof of that, and Cody seems to be the only person with enough gold and enough balls to actually do anything with it.
Or he could just make a 2-part plaster mold of a bitcoin, and then slipcast it with his own feces. How about that? How does that sound to you? Does that sound like fun?
Cody, you should collab with the waterjet channel again. Grab a bucket of sand and goop off the bottom of their tank and see what you can refine out of it! That'd make an interesting video, I think.
I think it would just be fine particles of the metal they cut and the abrasives that they use in the water jet. I dont think it would be anything special. Good idea though to see the process of trying to refine that.
I'm so glad you put that clip at the end. I was like why the hell is he beating it on the mini sledge when he said he just bought that anvil. I hope you used your 20% off coupon.
Especially since that looks exactly like the cheap anvil from Harbor Freight (IIRC) that the Waterjet guys cut open. It had a massive fault the manufacturer just squirted bondo into.
It would be very interesting to look at the internal structure of this ball. Probably if you put it under an electron microscope you'll see how it looks inside.
I wholeheartedly disagree with your statement. He often comes to incorrect conclusions, and fails to uphold any of the scientific method. As an entertainer perhaps he holds some value, but his ability to educate is lesser than the likes of Cody, Nilered, or Nurdrage.

Gold is very non-toxic, because it barely reacts with anything (except wacky cyanide solutions, aqua regia, etc.), including your body's tissues. Just sits there and doesn't do anything to you. Perhaps he is some sort of mythical beast though that is allergic to gold due to magical reasons.
Ive been subscribed to your channel for so long. I don't even know what you are talking about must of the time with chemicals and such, but I still love your videos and have always tried to learn something from them!
actually it didnt take balls at all to do that thats the beauty of gold deforming it doesnt make it lose value . yeah maybe he lost a gram of gold in the process but thats not really a big deal
3:15 I forgot what that's called but it happened on a door to a space station or a shuttle door in space. The lack of oxygen basically prevented an oxide layer from building up which is what prevents two sperate pieces of the same metal from welding together in our atmosphere. Gold is extremely unreactive with everything especially oxidization which is why I'm guessing it was happening in your case.
The refining videos are my favorite, you should make that next one extra long. Also would be interesting to see the ball cut in half to see if there are layers, or a smaller ball. Call it "$1,200 gold ball inside $12,000 gold ball" to get more RUclips money to make another gold ball
Maybe the reason for the little balls rattling inside the bigger one is because the first ball Cody rolled must of conspresed more than the other sheets and I was must dencer than the outside of the gold shell
Cody is the type of guy to make a foil ball out of $12,000 worth of gold -- but works on the floor because a table is expensive.
I hope he meant 12 hundred, not 12 thousand dollars worth of gold. Gold is currently $1300 per ounce.
Michael Steeves yeah man, you ever heard of finding a table just lying around in the dirt? Of course not, they are rarer than all the precious gems and it’s not worth breaking your priceless IKEA furniture for the sake of some lousy gold!
Ian Krasnow he actually paid 15,000$ for the gold.
Looks like it's about 280 grams on the scale; 9 troy oz.
then ignores his new anvil and just uses another hammer.
You know the man is more dedicated to the videos than the money he makes from them when he literally spends $12,000 dollars to make a ball out of gold, and he doesn't even bother to make it ten minutes long OR even make the title really click baity

Cody'sLab could you shoot an iron bullet through a conductive tube? To show the Faraday effect
Cody'sLab about the rattling could you fix it if you kept hitting with the hammer
you can see the weight in the video ~279.5g
Cody'sLab how much does it weigh? I want to figure out the trapped air inside that is a byotch to get out
Are you going to try to recover the gold from the anvil that lightly came off the ball?
Cody, You are using a lot of gold and you don't extend the video to 10 minutes to get more ads on your vid, this is what I call delicacy. Im so proud
it's not like he's gonna put it on his shelf and leave it forever. His only cost of gold in this video is like a dollar's worth of gold that gets pounded onto the anvil surface or hammers and lost as a tiny amount of dust. Everything else will just get re-used in another experiment.

Money is just a number, but gold is a unique element
It's worth comes from it's scarcity though. If it was as ubiquitous as iron it wouldn't have nearly as much value.

If anyone was wondering, the ball ended up being about 2.45465% air. Roughly 23.41088 carat gold.
i know. hence the 2.45465% air
r/theydidthemath
The air pockets don't make the metal more impure it's still 24 carat
A density measurement would be interesting. Presumably all the non-gold is just air, but it would be interesting to know how much made it in.
In his patreon, he commented that "It has an overall density of 18.84g/cm^3 so not much air, ~ .35ml if my math is right."
Oh, cool! Thanks for the info.

Cody can you make a pure gold bell I really want to see hear what that might sound like
joey grieco Pure gold sounds horrible. It’s about as dull as lead.
joey grieco I thought that said “pure gold ball” and I was like.. what?
the harder the metal, the brighter the ring, so tungsten carbide would make the best sounding bell, but it'd be so brittle that it'd probably vibrate itself to pieces, by contrast gold is soft so it'd have quite a dull ring, but it'd still be interesting to have documented proof of that, and Cody seems to be the only person with enough gold and enough balls to actually do anything with it.
It would sound like "thunk thunk thunk" as it rings. If gold would work, they'd have been making bells from it for centuries.
most other youtubers buy cars, cloths, and jewelry with their youtube earnings. But cody just buys a fuck ton of gold.
Cast a bitcoin with the gold with enough metal to equate to the current value bitcoin for comparison
yuteyuuby kyuubi the price jumps to fast.
The video would just be cody frantically shaving off and welding on bits of gold every couple seconds of he tried to make it equal to bitcoins value
he could average the week value.
Or he could just make a 2-part plaster mold of a bitcoin, and then slipcast it with his own feces. How about that? How does that sound to you? Does that sound like fun?
Croter8ment jesus...what's your fucking problem snappy sammy
Bless you cody, hopefully youtube doesn't strike you for use of the word "ball"
It takes a pair of spherical objects to do that
Thank you, Cody, for not clickbaiting by putting a completely mirror ball bearing in the thumb
Cody, you should collab with the waterjet channel again. Grab a bucket of sand and goop off the bottom of their tank and see what you can refine out of it! That'd make an interesting video, I think.
Yes that would be was awsome
Lotsaaa impurities.
I think it would just be fine particles of the metal they cut and the abrasives that they use in the water jet. I dont think it would be anything special. Good idea though to see the process of trying to refine that.
Sorry action lab. You just got one-upped.
So what did you do over spring break?
Smashed my 15 thousand dollar gold bar into a ball.
Really need to see the video on you cutting open that gold ball to see what actually happened inside! Is it a single ball inside or multiple balls?
Amazeballs!
But honestly, I never cared about this trend until just now when I saw this video.
Micah Philson same here
Same
Same.
I didn't know the foil ball trend was, well, trending.
Cody you're honestly such a cool guy so knowledgeable and make such fun videos. Best wishes!!
It kinda looks like the tritium ball from spider man 2
Funny, I instantly thought of the "sphere", from the movie Sphere.
I'm gonna throw this on Adam Savage's channel. Maybe he would love to have one?
So much better than aluminum. Also, brass? That Brassturd!
Hmm... does this add to the premium u paid for those gold bars? Only Cody can take precious metal and make it worth more.
LOL only Cody? Or every single jewelery maker EVER. And no, he deidn't make it worth more.
calculate density to estimate open pore space inside
I guess one might say... this is 24k magic.

The only foil ball worth making. edit: And the only foil ball video worth watching. Cody's awesome.
After the ball started rattling I thought you should get it cut by the waterjet channel to see the cross section.
That would be so cool! :D
Jonathan Kayne I think he's upped the heavy metal content of their tank by enough, already.

pawn shops usually sell them, sometimes even jewellery stores
You can get them online. Lots of vendors. JM Bullion is one, but there are many.
