Bringing a 2nd Dog Into a Home With a Cane Corso

  • Wanted to discuss how we would handle bringing a second Cane Corso into the home. One of our biggest concerns is mentally how would it effect Bruce Wayne our Cane Corso. Would it ADD to his quality of life or would it DETRACT from the quality of his life? Would it add stress to his life or would it make him less stressed to have a playmate 24/7. Now we all understand puppies are stressful no matter what. But once puppy hood is over how would it improve the quality of Bruce Wayne's life or take away from it?

I think he’s the perfect age right now for a puppy. He’s still young enough and having the patients that when you’re training that puppy he’s going to train that puppy to what he wants and what he expects. So I think this would be a great time for him to have a companion. He’s still young enough to where he can grow up with the puppy. He’ll make a great big brother.

4 years old is a perfect age to bring on a new pup. They are mature at this stage and will be able to model good behaviour but still have the energy to play/bond with the youngster. We have always been a two dog household and have typically introduced new pups when the older dog is 3 -4 years old. Would absolutely LOVE to see you with a l'il Bruce Wayne!!!💖💖💖

When we thought our CC was ready for a canine friend, we skipped the puppy stage and found a rescue that was being fostered. There are too many CC's in the system that were purchased as pups to people not knowing how to deal with them.

We brought our rottie into the house when our shepherd was 13, but only because our other Rottie passed and she was so lonely being alone. Roxy wasn't crazy about the puppy but she warmed up after about 5 months. Then we brought another rottie in when the first puppy turned 2 because we didn't want her to be alone when Roxy passed. Sadly Roxy passed last month at the age of 17 (an age which I attribute t an awesome RAW diet). Now Juju has Lenny. We have always had 2 dogs and because we are used to that I think that is always what we will do. Makes me feel better when we are at work that they have each other. Plus they love playing together :) The one thing you mentioned that we did do is always Make Juju feel that she still had our attention even when we trained the puppy. We would split up our time. I started walking Juju at 4:30 am as our "special time" and 3 years later we still do it every day - its a habit we made to make her feel special when the puppy came and I loved the alone time with her so much, we made it our thing!

wow, Roxy your Shepard lived to 17...you are so lucky. i lost my Rottie at 9.3 years to heart disease and it was the most devastating loss of my life...1000 times worse than the loss of my father, wife, brother or mother, 1000 times worse. the most incredible dog i ever owned or knew...brought pure love into the world and lit up sooo many lives that he touched while here. he drew a crowd everywhere we went, people would pull their cars over when driving by during walks to see him. and i loved seeing their faces light up as his love touched them, making their day just a little better with that shot of sunshine.

We adopted a female CC puppy, last year, when our male CC was 4 years old. He did not like it at all! He wouldn't do anything about it but he would ignore her and would want to be near her at all. Once she started growing and after we've put some work in, after about a year they started being best friends 😊. We love it when they play, they are sooo hilarious.😁 Buuuut we only adopted her because we need both of them for work, so we spend all our time with them.
Everything you said in this video is exactly what we went through.

Firstly, great video as always. If it were not for you guys we would have never got our first Corso.
I think that Bruce would be a perfect role model dog, perfect temperament and energy for another dog.
We have a 3 year old intact male Corso, Bear and have recently added a 9 week old female puppy, Kora. My partner was very apprehensive, to say the least, about getting another dog, especially a Corso. I have previously had 2 Rottweilers (brother and sister) and had witnessed how good they were together, so was confident as to the positives of having a second dog. I have to say that whilst Bear is generally a good dog, we have only had him for a year (adopted him through the breeder he originally came from) and he is still work in progress with regards to his training. He certainly isn't on the same level as Bruce Wayne.
So, the first, I'd say 3 weeks, were tentative. Bear was a little out of sorts and unsure of the puppy being there at first. Bear was super corrective of Kora those first weeks, almost waiting for the opportunity to correct her. My partner was even saying that we should rehome Kora. Fast forward a few weeks and they have definitely turned a corner. Bear looks for Kora all the time. If I take her out on her own he won't leave the door until she's back home, checks her over, etc. When it's play time he doesn't really focus on us anymore, its all about his engagement with Kora, and they play so well together - although I do have to call a time out occasionally for it getting a little too rough. I now actually think that in the beginning, Bear was almost setting the standard for her. She is very respectful of him and acknowledges he's above her in the pack. There is no food aggression, resource guarding, anything like that. When we are correcting Kora, if she doesn't respond Bear will correct her.
Although we are a few months in - Kora will be 5 month next week - things are looking good for their future. We definitely appreciate the relationship they have, which is something we certainly could not replicate to the same level. They are very close and have a strong bond.
Having watched your guys for the past 18 months or so, I think you guys would be perfect to bring another dog into the pack and would give so many people inspiration and knowledge. I also believe that Bruce would get a fulfilment that is on a canine level that would enhance his life. Whatever decision you guys make we look forward to seeing your journey continue.
Respectfully. Dave, Magda, Bear & Kora

When we got a puppy our dog was already older at 7 years old. She is a lab so she’s like always a puppy, however she has never really cared for other dogs. But it was amazing how exited she was and she immediately became like a mother to our new lab pup. She has way more life and fun keeping up with our now one year old lab. So I think because dogs are such pack animals it depends on the time rather than age in my experience.

Jason! You and Kara continue to motivate me to keep training our dogs and newest Corso pup!
You do ask a tricky question, when is it too old to get another pup. Our dogs age ranges from 11 yo, 8 yo, 7 yo and 5 mo. And yup, we are dog parents, no kiddos in this house hold :). Our 5 mo Corso has bonded stronger with my 7 yo male more than the others. I think it has a lot to do with each of our dogs personalities. Our oldest is very submissive while our 7 yo is very quick to correct undesirable behaviors and play with the pup.
But Kara hit the nail on the head, which you also preach Jason. Can your lifestyle handle a puppy? Ultimately y'all are and will be such great pup parents! I hope you get a pup sooner than later, but support y'all either way! Cheers :)

Personally I wouldn’t wait much past 4 years. I wouldn’t want senior energy - puppy energy levels.
THANK YOU for saying a proper leader wouldn’t expect a 5 month old pup, to be as well trained as Bruce Wayne. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 In aug some family member was saying my 5 month corso wasn’t trained enough. And I should be spending 5 hours a day JUST on basics. I said nooooooo way to much for her growing brain. Couple mins, couple times a day with plenty of play time, & walking time is lots for her. Than she turned 6 months, my goodness totally different dog & understands so much more.

I’m going to speak from personal experience. I waited until my female CC hit 3yrs old. I took 2 years to think this over before making my decision. My female is very dominate and extremely connected to the family structure. But i tested her and saw how she was around her best friend that had way more energy than she had. I felt like she was missing a buddy to play with. I’ve always had a male and female of the same breed. I found an excellent breeder with a prefect female she had plans to breed again. I did just what you suggested, we discussed the temperament of my female and what i was looking for. Then discussed the family/house hold structure along with my life style. I was set on a male since it’s highly been suggested to not have 2 females in the same house even though many do. Plus i wanted a male as i tend to see they are more easy going usually. I picked from 1 of 2 males. He’s higher energy than my girl, not as serious, and loves everyone he meets. First intro went amazing however i suggest keeping puppy on the leash and make sure the other dog gets equal attention. She accepted very well, however as he aged she set him straight as to who was boss. I monitored this closely and allowed her to correct him. Mind you she still does this even today. Took both of them about 4 months to figure who was in charge between the two of them. Thankfully i was home full time during the past 2yrs due to covid so i had a much closer bond with him growing up and was able to train him more being home. Now he’s turning 2 and she’s turning 5. They are good pals, romp around daily with each other and burn off that energy chasing each other around outside. I would say getting my boy Maui has calmed down Shelby. She’s never alone and has a buddy with her at all times. Granted he’s like that annoying younger brother that gets on everyone nerves from time to time. But he’s the biggest baby in the world. I don’t regret my decisions and nor would i have it any other way. If you take your time, find the right breeder and right puppy. All should work out well. But yes Bruce will get jealous and will be for some time. But after a year passes you’ll see a new side of him that you’ll surely enjoy in my opinion. As you say having this breed is a life time commitment. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I have my guardian aka Shelby, and my social butterfly Maui. Most importantly my mother spends time with them while I’m at work and my daughter after school while she waits for me to get home. The entire family has been part of the training program. This is crucial and has paid off tremendously in the long run. Can’t wait to see what you two decide. Either way it will be what works for your family structure.

Bang on info, I have two Corso's different energy levels. Saying that they compliment each other well. A male and a female. The only stress is when she comes into heat, but other than that then get on well specially outside the home on walks together. They need company specially when you are not at home. When we eventually have to return to a normal working environment it will be good to have a friend for him to play.

I'd say 6 is the last point I'd consider it. At that point they've had such a long time living with no other dogs and so it'd be so jarring. Doing it before that is kinda like living at home as a child and then you go to college and have your first roommate. When you're a full-on real tax-paying adult, having a roommate gets old fast. And even more so when you retire.

I Love Bruce Wayne! In my experience with large breeds (Akita, and currently a Mastiff mix of Corso-Bordeaux) I would recommend that you bring a female puppy into your home. Two males will mark inside your home, and possibly eventually fight over something when you are not around. Also, Bruce may love a female more than a male buddy. I always have more than one dog so that they have each other when I am not home, for support. Thank you for asking our opinions, and I love watching your family. If you bring in a pup you will be surprised how much Bruce will love it.

I have 2 Corsi. The breeder was insistent we get a female and male. It’s worked out perfect. They mesh together perfectly. BUT, I know you don’t wanna fix Bruce. Well, we have fixed ours because it was juse to much to deal with. So, that’s a factor y’all will have to think about. But our corsi are very happy. I’m a critical care nurse, and have been having to work a lot. And my husband also has to. They needed each other due to our schedules that we have had the unfortunate state affairs with COVID. I believe it’s why we have not had a lot of behavioral problems. So y’all go for itt. He will be so happy to have another pack member🧚🏻‍♂️

I think he's at a great age for a puppy. We brought Pepper (Corso Presa mix) home when Shrek (Bullmastiff) was 5 and he handled it quite well, now that she's 2 and a half, he has some fun with her on walks and playing in the yard. It's definitely a balancing act for love, rewards and corrections between the puppy stage and adulthood. I'm sure you two would do well with Bruce and making sure he's well loved even with a puppy.

I’d recommend a female. I do not own CC but I have 2 GSD. My female was my first dog and to even out the energy in the house our boy settled in just fine. Did have to take things slow and kennel the puppy at first so they respected each other and got used to each other organically. Either way you guys are strong pack leaders so you got it. But I’d definitely let Bruce pick out the puppy. That what I did.

Having had 4 dogs myself, 1 Maltese, I shitzu, 1 pyrenees, and 1 pitbull, I think Bruce is a pretty good age. I wouldn't wait though because I found they tend to have very little patience after about 5 yrs old. I found the best time was about 3 yrs old when you bring in a new pup. The older dog has alot more patience at that age and more energy. When my pyrenees was 5 we brought in the pitbull, and my Brutus had no patience and much less energy so it took a long time before they became good friends. Just my own experience. But your patience is key, trust me on that one. Now we have only 1 boy and that is our cane Corso Zeus. But we are thinking next year when he is 2 we will probably start looking for a second one. They are a shit tonne of work, but WELL worth it. Good luck with your decision.

I hope you guys do get another cane corso! You should let your wife pick it out so she can have a big love bug of her own too! That would be SO SWEET! I'm so thrilled for you guys! On a side note, I feel like despite taking on a commitment of getting any animal, it's a very personal decision and often very hard for people to rehome their pets. I have been lucky enough to never be in a situation where I had to think of doing that and I'm SUPER into my animals and their care as well. I could match Jason's passion for Bruce with my passion for all of my pets so I'm not saying this because of any lack of care for animals as I'm a HUGE animal lover and go above and beyond for them as much as I can! Back to my point though, what Jason said in this video stood out to me because I feel like his words can hold a lot of weight to his viewers and it is a topic that should be thought of with a lot of care. I don't think it's wrong if an animal lands in a new loving home that can take over that commitment instead. If someone found another loving home for their pet for whatever reasons they may have rehomed them to begin with then it's totally ok. I think people overly demonetize rehoming pets for the wrong reasons and it gets out of hand with judgements. Really, it's more than likely what's best for the animal/person in the long run if the owner is unhappy enough they want to. People should save their judgement for those who get bored of their pets and dump them at a shelter or on the side of the street instead of finding a loving home for them.

When I got the new puppy to help with not confusing the older dog I trained the puppy in German, my other dog is trained in English. So even though tone of voice can carry over I found it helped. And funny thing is my older dog ended up learning a bit of German and vica verca so now they seem to do the commands together at the same time no matter what language I use they are pretty smart. I didn't seperate my dogs for training except for walking I didn't walk them together it would have just been too much my older dog is very intense in his temperment to put it kindly and I found it a lot easier to train the puppy to walk on leash without the older one there. But that will change as the puppy gets older.

And because of that she does not really like big dogs. At the beginning she was offended when we brought him home, but then she got used to him. And now they are 4,5 and 13 years old and they can't be without each other and they love each other so much. I think Bruce would also have to get used to new pup but then they would become best friends.

We have had 2 older dogs, when we got our CC as a puppy, when the two older dogs died our CC was already 11 years old. We got a rescue Pharaoh Hound that was about 6 months old when we got her. No problems at all. But mit be that he was rained with Hound.

I’m sure if you are going to buy another cane Corso it’s going to be from Zoe, she definitely will give you the best puppy for your family needs and needs for Bruce! Dogs are too smart and he will understand quickly a new puppy is a baby and he is a part of a pack now. I’m sure they will be the best friends, because it’s always depends on human how it’s gonna go. And you are guys so wise and knowledgeable, responsible and it’s going to be alright!❤️

Oh, second pause - wanting to interject something on what you say (Bruce reacting to Jason's correcting Norman): What helped my dogs in the situations of older & trained dog puls newbie puppy was always putting the NAME first. And treating them as a unit most of the time. So, we'd be in the garden, Cora doing her thing, sniffing around, or chewing on a toy. Maya would be on a long line,, picking up rocks, for example. I'd go: "Maya, leave it!", then "Good leave it, Maya", then giving a tiny treat. Cora would watch, but not be confused. Or going "Cora, sit - stay!", and she'd do that whilst I was teaching Maya how to walk heel or something. Very, very rarely did I separate them. But admittedly, whilst raising Maya, Cora has become unfaithful - she's much more attached to my husband now, as he spent more active time with her. I like taking Maya on walks alone, and he prefers the same thing with Cora. She also gets to sleep on the cozies spot in his office during the day. Hope that helps a tiny little bit, even though I wouldn't have one split-second of doubt that if ANYone can raise a Corso pup alongside a happy Bruce Wayne, it's you guys!

In my own experience, I wouldn’t say there’s an age cap as to when is it too old of an age to bring another dog. I had a 11 year old miniature schnauzer (Shadow) and my parents got my a golden retriever for my birthday that year. They were best buddies & the veterinarian said that Shadow gained his puppy energy back because we got a new four-legged friend in the house. We had two more years with him 💖

I think that Bruce is the perfect age right now for a puppy he's still young enough and having the patients that when you're training that puppy he's going to train that puppy to what he wants and expects. So i think this who'd be a great time for him to have a companion.he's still young enough to where he can grow up with the puppy ..he who'd make a fantastic big brother..

I think right now is the perfect age. Because if it took 4 years to get him here then it'd be about the same for the puppy. So Bruce would be 8 by the time the puppy is at his stage, and he'd still be young enough to enjoy it

My dog just turned 6. I originally planned to get another dog not long after I adopted him at a year old but life got in the way of that. Just bought a house end of Oct specifically so I can get more dogs and plan to adopt a pup soon. My new roommate has a dog about my dog's age and while they both had a bit of attitude upon meeting they do great together now. Will see how throwing a 3rd dog (and a puppy at that) goes. Mine is a male, rommate's female, and pup will be male (because 2 males is supposed to be better than 2 females...and my last 2 were both males)

Seven years old would be max to bring in a puppy. Bruce will be heading into his last adulthood, early senior years. The energy of a puppy I think would irritate him more and by the time puppy is ready to do the adult hikes/ events, Bruce will have slowed down even more. They'll end up with mis-matched needs. Up to the age of 7/7.5, Bruce is young enough to cope with your puppy once it becomes an adult. If you wait much past that, Bruce will be a true senior when the puppy grows up.

I think it would be great for you guys to get another Cane Corso and allow wifey to train him from the beginning with your guidance and assistance. I think it would be great for women to be able to see another woman handle such a large and powerful breed. There’s a lot of common misconceptions about mastiff breeds and women. Not only would it be great to see you guys start from the beginning with a new pup, but it would also be great because you guys have such an amazing channel with such great content. I have a bullmastiff pup myself, but I really enjoy watching you guy’s content. Great job.

I'd say now would be a good time to get a puppy. Bruce is trained well knows what you expect and young enough to deal with a higher energy. Far as the having two dogs at once in my opinion it's actually much much easier training than I feel your expecting. I raise Great Danes and always had more than one. The older one always teaches the puppy the manners etc and will help correct the puppy if it starts to do something he knows you don't allow. So Bruce Wayne saw your puppy start to do something he knows isn't allowed if you didn't see it he would likely correct him on his own knowing you don't allow it. That being said my dogs aren't nearly as well trained as yours and I'd really like to work on that going forward. You and Bruce Wayne inspire me to do a better job in training. I've also been trying to read and learn on the raw diet as I feel your way of feeding is much better than kibble. Look forward to watching more of your videos keep up the great work.

Well, it was supposed to be the same age, but my sis went to bat for me and talked my parents into a few years earlier. It was similar with my kids, my oldest got to do stuff my youngest wasn't old enough and ready to do. He didn't always like that, but it was the nature of being younger.

Pausing right at the start to answer the question "how old is too old to bring another dog in". I've had multiple teams of 2 dogs; adding in board & train males and females to my own intact adult male. He was fine with both, but never formed a close attachment to these dogs. Then, we had a 6 - 8 year old female rescue dog. And she was fine and playful with other dogs outside the home - but inside... no. Grumpy towards guests's dogs, and when we brought in our current German Shepherd as a puppy, she never (ever) even played with her. Merely tolerated her. After the old dog passed on, we had 2 separate 3-month bouts of foster dogs. And our German Shepherd liked the adult male, but disliked the juvenile female. Only when we brought her a young puppy (Maya, our Estrela) did she BLOSSOM. Love on first sniff! They are still best friends; not that they necessarily play that much together now that Maya's becoming an adult, but there's a super-strong bond between them. Zero conflict, apart from the odd correction when the young one is becoming too much. Cora was 4 when we brought in Maya. So, I'm not an expert in this, but bottom line from my experience is: The chemistry plays a major role, and if in doubt, pairing male and female has much better chances of success than male and male. I know you're favoring bringing in a male puppy, but every dog is different.

Yeah I'm not into female Corsos. Stature is much different being smaller, smaller heads etc which is why I will only own males. Key thing is matching energy and personality I feel.

Hi Jason and Kara, love all your videos!! I do have a question for you though.....how would you handle grief and loss in a Cane Corso? We just had to let go of our 16yr old hound Charlie and they were very attached. We opted for in home euthanasia for our beloved Charlie and we did bring our Corso Tundra over to see Charlie just before and after he passed. It was truly heartbreaking. She has been depressed and has been extra clingy. we try to keep her engaged with play time and keep a "normal " routine and regimen. Any suggestions? Thank you for what you guys do.

Maybe it was different because we had 2 dogs and one passed away of old age, and my other dog was 6 years old a great dane mastiff cattle dog mix very intense temperment very dominant. But he got on well with other males, and loved puppies. So I got a dogue de bordeaux and he was PERFECT I knew what kind of energy we needed and it needed to be lower than my older dog. Since our other dog had passed away Diesel my 6 year old was depressed he was just like he had died inside. He hardly ate or wanted to move, he didn't play he didn't care about much. When the puppy came oh man Diesel came back to life and they have become so bonded so close they are together all the time they play all day, sleep with each other the occasional bit of bitching but it has been almost a year and my older dog has helped me train and raise the puppy. I think you have to think of the temperment and energy level overall charactor of the orignal dog and the puppy if you know dogs you get a sixth sense on things. I am also very strict with behaviour and training too so that did help.

Hi guys…; my wife and I have owned and loved a Beautiful Majestic female Cane Corso thur her life span… I can honestly report that this breed connects with its family ( my wife and I) in ways that only an owner can truly appreciate. The one on one connection that a single dog and the owners achieve are without comparison… I’m afraid, that it’s possible the moment you bring in a new puppy you’ll find the new puppy may not be able to achieve the rare and special bond that was achieved with just a one on one relationship with you and your first Corso… the new puppy will seam to share his attention between his older pack leader Bruce Wayne and you guys … ? When the time arrives, The loss of your loved Corso will be truly devastating… (for years) , we are living it now… I know… But , I believe that at that time a new addition to your family will be much more therapeutic for both of you … No children, or empty nester’s, this breed of dog truly is a relationship miracle. Good luck, and Best wishes to you all, El & Sue

Your small horse is amazing. You can see his personality gleaming. You're also 100 percent on dogs losing training if you don't stay vigilant. I think Bruce will be fine introducing new members to your household up until around 7 or so, then they lock in and become a little territorial. Every species on this planet does better with a mate of some sort imo, so getting Bruce a gf or a brother sounds like a great idea since you obviously have the framework down.

That's just my experience having many dogs in my life.
