I have the 6 berth one of these. I like the idea of the fridge being on the opposite side. Those buttons can be a pain. You have to loosen them a little, if they’re too tight they jam, they won’t open anything. There’s cupboard space at the back between the fixed bunks and the dinette. I like the idea of the pole in the bathroom. 17:59 the broad bit at the front of the bench boy on ours got wet and a piece of it started coming off!! I had to super glue it back on. In the cave it I found some elastic rope stuff used for the inner poles for tents. I tied two pieces to the ends, to stop bottles etc from falling out. It works!! I love the front bog window too. Ours has a back window. I love that too. Sadly during a service they found it’s got damp problems on the front. The garage door fell off, 2 weeks ago while on Holliday. We had to duct tape it on securely. It’s going on to be fixed. It’s 4 years old and shouldn’t have damp!!? I’m going to make a make some modifications, like an extra shelf under the cooker, a shelf next to the sink, extra counter space like that table that comes up. Our door is near the front, so the cooker is next to the door. I love the design on the curtains and cushions, I’m not keen on the colour. Our design is circles with the mustard and grey colour. I hate it. I like a bit of colour in the design. It’s too bland. I’ve bought my own turquoise cushions.
I appreciate these small caravans, too. I like that my little fiberglass egg tracks perfectly behind my car. Also, if my car can get through a space, I know my little trailer will make it through too.
The Whale heating is brilliant, the water warm up so fast and even on the lowest setting it’s lovely and warm. Another great video, thanks Andrew. Hugs to Dougal.
Quite a shock its a little stunner ! Love the colours inside and its very spacious! Only thing that would put me off is not having a fully sealed shower cubicle. Dougel looking gorgeous as ever .
Another great balanced review Andrew. Love the practical assessments you make on each caravan looking at it through the eyes of different users. Totally agree, upholstery perfect but your points on washroom and cabinet handles so valid. Hopefully Eldis take on board for what must surely be simple cost effective upgrades. Does Elddis still make these Xplore 304s with the weaker ABS panels on the front and rear of the van? - if so they can seriously stress crack after about 2-3 years causing major problems for the owner. Body integrity is so important, above anything else.
I had a 304 the year it was introduced. All the things we thought could be improved have been and wouldn’t hesitate to get a new model now. I’m a Gran with 2 granddaughters who will love it. In the original my 85 year old mum slept in the back lower bed with a lovely curtain around he bed and my husband and I in the front double. We had an awning and used the table out there to eat so clothes didn’t bother us on site.
Just wanted to say, me and my dad love watching your videos (and may or may not be jealous of your new home village). If you ever expand in to merch, I would definitely recommend a picture of Dougal and the words 'he never smiles'. Thanks for the great content.
I luv my Adria Action there are very few caravans I would swop it for regardless of size or price. This one comes close. I really like the front locker, It does have a pet hate of mine, the fridge on the floor. I'm 6"4" & the old knees don't bend like they used to. Those latches seem to be getting more popular with manufacturers. One could add a drawer pull. Oh, the BBQ bayonet at the front fantastic. I'm enjoying this small caravan series, Thank You😎
Looks to be a super caravan. I was musing on how our perceptions have changed over the years. You described this Eldiss as a "Tiny caravan" in 2021 at 14' 8". Cast your mind back the the era of Glynis (the classic caravan Andrew used to own).Let us use the approximate sizes of the Sprite range back in the day. Cadet 8 feet. 400 10 feet. Alpine 12 feet. Musketeer 14 feet. Major 16 feet. At that time a 14 foot caravan was considered to be quite large. The 8 foot two berth Cadet was Tiny (I had one. Towed it with a 1 litre Metro). The 400 was a compact 4 berth (Which I believe Glynis was). The Alpine was a 4 berth typical family van (I had one of them too, towed it with a Wartburg - 3 cylinder 2 stroke 1 litre engine). The Musketeer and Major were just dream caravans. Whatever size of caravan one has, it can be a source of joy and adventure. Go caravaning!
Well said that man! Yes, back in the 70s this was mid-sized. Glynnis was an Alpine, so about the same size too. When young, we had a 15ft Thomson which was big back then! Yes, how perceptions change. But I think smaller vans are on the cusp of a renaissance - there are a few comments calling for the smaller 302 to be re-introduced too.

Thank you for THE MOST comprehensive and honest review I have come across of this (and in fact, any) caravan. Your eye to details and potential flaws is wonderful. Your opinions and experience were very helpful for a first time caravanner like me and you picked up on lots of things that, perhaps, buyers would only notice once they had made a purchase, such as the door handles and hob details. It was also SO helpful to actually show how the beds were folded up/down and to include the measurements of them. I was previously very interested on this model, but my teenage son is already 6 foot 1, so would never fit in this bunk. Time to re-think. 😆Thank you so much. Karen
Haha we've got one of these and I've got to say for a couple they are superb. We've had it for nearly 2 years and it looks as fresh today as when we bought it. Well done Andrew for highlighting bigger isn't always better.
I've been down the motorhome vs caravan decision making route many times, and there is no right answer. I think it depends on the type of travel/holiday you have in mind. A caravan may be a bit of a faff to tow, although with a stabiliser and the right tow car it's a breeze. Once you're on site, you have your base camp set up and your car to get around in. A motorhome may be better on a trip where you're constantly moving on to the next destination, with one night stopovers along the route. It's also going to be used more for spontaneous days out all year and weekend trips away, and even as a second family vehicle (if it's a reasonable size). So you're probably going to get more value out of motorhome ownership than a caravan, which may just sit looking forlorn on the drive for 48 weeks of the year. Using a motorhome for an extended stay on a site means either taking a motorcycle or bicycles to get around on, or the frustration of packing everything away to take the vehicle off site for the day. A caravan is better for me for my type of holiday, and this Elddis Xplore 304 offers a lot for the size. However, the clever money always seems to buy an Eriba caravan because they hold their value very much like VW-based motorhomes. Personally, I'd go for one that perfectly suits my needs and try and keep it for many years. For weekend breaks you can probably get a Premier Inn deal far cheaper than the price of most UK campsites, and rather than take a caravan or motorhome you just need a car.
We’ve got the Elddis Explore 6 birth. Those buttons can be a pain. You do have to untwist them a little. If you do them too tight, it jams them. You can’t unlock them. There’s no counter space. Our door is near the front. So we have that style cooker first then the sink. There is counter/cupboard space up at the back dinette between the dinette and the fixed bunks. I too love the huge window at the front. And I love windows to the rear. We got the caravan serviced in April . They have discovered it’s got rot below the window. The garage door fell off 2 weeks ago while we were on holiday!! It’s going on to be fixed. It’s only 4 years old!! It shouldn’t have rot in it?! I love it. I’m hoping to do a couple of modifications to it. Work out extra bench space, like an extra work surface. Or an extra shelf in the cupboard under the cooker and the plate cupboard. And I like that idea of the pole in the bath room.

It's a beautiful caravan and I'm over 64. I could sleep in either bed. And I do like having at least one extra bed in case I bring a friend. But I'd probably never use the upper bunk.
As a single caravanner I was so close to buying one of these in 2011. There were two main things that put me off: (1) in that model-year they had not yet included a window in the rear dinette and (2) being 6'2" and biggish build, the washroom was a bit snug and hard to move around in. This hesitation was enough to make me think, "that new Bailey 400/2 with the rear washroom can't POSSIBLY be the smallest caravan that Bailey do? There must be a smaller model". That's when I realised that the Bailey 400/2 was actually a much smaller 'van than I had ever imagined; so I went straight ahead and bought one. I still have a soft-spot for the little Elddis because it seems to hark back to caravans from the 70s and 80s; but 10 years on and with my Bailey still going strong, I have no regrets.
These reviews are really eye opening at how cheaply its possible to get a fairly decent caravan for people looking at starting out. I've just been looking online at a 13 year old motorhome that's more than twice the cost of this caravan. Food for thought!
is tiny but very good use of space,with a few edits to the furiture you could slap a 50" tele in there and a few other things and be pretty good and it could probs be pulled by a ford focus

Hi Andrew, I know your very used to towing a van, and I have towed my brick oven and small trailer short distances before, but being disabled I'm thinking I may have trouble when it comes to parking and unhitching, is there anything out there that could make it possible for me to do it on my own? The part that worries me above all is the stabilisers, normally meaning bent down or kneeling to hand crank down the stabilisers? Is there anything that can automatically level the van like on large motorhomes? My guess is they wouldn't need to be too powerful to do the job on a small caravan? I like this van alot, I've been wanting a campervan for along time, but my opinion may be changing! I'm begining to think of the savings I can make, a good used car and a new caravan! Love the style in this van. Any ideas to help out would be greatly appreciated.
You can get self leveling systems for caravans.. Google.. E and P hydraulic systems. I'd recommend a motor mover to move it around for you .. plus a decent 100mh or more battery with a solar panel to keep it topped up ... remember all this equipment needs to be taken into account when working out your payload 👍
Yes, E&P do a self levelling system. You can also get a motor mover to avoid doing the manhandling. BUT... both these systems can be heavy, so you will need a caravan with a generous payload. Good luck!
@@andrewjditton will I need to move it around? Can't I just reverse it in and lower down the support leveling jack's? Is it normal to have to move your van? I became a dab hand at reversing my trailer into very tight spots! The whole idea is to keep the van small and easy to tow, I don't mind upgrading the axle, but I want to tow using an automatic VW caddy or similar typed vehicle, do you think that would be possible? How much weight would the caravan mover and jacks add?
Oh I really like this one! I totally agree that the bunk should really be an optional extra. Not everyone has kids or grand kids they want to take with them. I think I would take it down. Yes this is for the short list, I’m really not interested in the large vans and this looks like it is so well planned. I personally would want the shower incorporated into one of those movable walls you get so much in motorhomes - but for the price, very nice 👍
Great ideas there Lorraine... but I'm sure a swinging bulkhead would add to the weight and the cost... It's always a tough compromise! Thanks for watching.
It looks STUNNING, Andrew! The only thing that I have a feeling you’ll find annoying, apart from the cupboard handles; might be that 240v socket that looks too low to the ground to plug in, a MacBook Pro charger in at least. Obviously, I don’t know as we only see it from your 179cm height level, (we’re the same height). But it didn’t look there is much clearance for our Macbook chargers, unless you plug an EU adapter in to it and then plus the charger in? Anyway, I’m so happy for you and I really want the same van with my electric car. So, allI can say is thanks again for this helpful, in-depth look into the xplore. I’d make the bed the other way round, ie, the cushions facing down not up and depending on what side you sleep, to make it even for both people, put one thin cushion face down next to a wider one faced down and then finally the other thinner back cushion faced down. Then you have no breaks in the bits were your body pressure points are the heaviest. ❤️ 🙏🏻
Thank you! Actually, you'll see in Sunday's video that I asked Kimberly to rotate the socket 90 degrees to plug in the MacBook, which they did in about 2 seconds :) I used a Duvalay for a bed so the topper helps plug the gaps. I'm still working out the best solution for sleeping! All the best.
Lovely little L shaped 'slouchable' lounge... just a little bit different... agree it would be better if the bunk was optional (it would free up a little more usable load capacity too). Top tour!!! 😁

Bought a 304 this year… love it. We ditched the mattress and ladders and use the bunk to store the bedding. Love the simple light decor and the dinette is a winner. Easily accommodates two adults and a German shepherd. We upgraded from a 2 berth because the dog is a bed hog!!! The only thing I don’t like is the bathroom, agree about the shower… I won’t be using it… what’s wrong with a little dirt anyway?! Saw your duvalay vid… think I need one - 🐶

I was shocked to see the standard of finishing in the bathroom panels. This would lead to big problems later on with damp and rot. In fact it has put me off this caravan and probably all others. I parked and lived in my old Elddis in a barn in France for two years while renovating, but had to live with four legged furry intruders who came in from underneath. Next for me will be a regular van with plywood panels and mod cons. DIY style. The best, and the cheapest.

great video about a nice trailer1 I agree with those buttons because my fingers are fatter than yours! the thing is, there is exactly the same style of locks, maybe a little bigger and they come out 2x as much! If you think you could sleep in that shorty bed comfortably I would be surprised. What is the deal with those chassis weight upgrades? that seems only to be a way for the dealer of making extra money, they do nothing to the chassis than file the higher weight!
I agree that the drop down bunk would never be used if I purchased this caravan and would just be a waste of space and weight. As for the cover strip over the inner lining I have an Elddis 135 motorhome which has the same problem of this cover 'lifting' away from the wall covering, which, on a £43,000 motorhome after 3 or 4 years is to say the least 'disappointing', (any tips on fixing it back down would be appreciated) I have been told that covering with a piece of card and then ironing it back own works but not tried this.
A good review of a small, light caravan at the "more affordable" end of the market. For me and my wife the bathroom is the vital part (prefer a dedicated shower cubicle though that can be in the same room as the loo and washbasin, rather than a shower curtain to protect the rest of the room) so this one would not be for us - BUT it is value for money and Elddis will sell a lot of these.
The sink and shelf takes away 50% of the shower space,I don't like the bunk socket-the cable will be trailing towards the table=could do better,but I like the one handed shelves.
Good review. You manage to do a level of criticism to caravans that other caravan "journalist" don't seem to manage. We've got a 304 and there's 2 pesky annoying points you missed: 1. the socket at the dinette is stupidity positioned so you can't really plug anything in, really needs to be higher or rotated 90 degrees. 2. the panel wooden panel that the dinette socket is on is too high so you can't easily sit on the seat sideways to put your shoes on. Otherwise a great caravan we got ours 2 months ago and love it!

Hard to say, but I do think that EVs are starting to feature in the decision process of 'early adopters', even if they don't plan to change their car just yet.

Great little caravan! I own a 2013 Xplore 302, which is even more compact, but I always call it the Tardis; it feels very spacious and luxurious. I love it. The area below the “hob knobs” is indeed a dirt trap. The lounge in the 302 is a bit longer (l-shaped), because the kitchen is in the back of the caravan. It’s a shame Elddis don’t make these smaller ones anymore, but the 304 is lovely as well (albeit is tad too heavy for my EV). The bunk seems very easily removable. Couple of screws and out it comes :)

It's also going to be used more for spontaneous days out all year and weekend trips away, and even as a second family vehicle (if it's a reasonable size). So you're probably going to get more value out of motorhome ownership than a caravan, which may just sit looking forlorn on the drive for 48 weeks of the year. Using a motorhome for an extended stay on a site means either taking a motorcycle or bicycles to get around on, or the frustration of packing everything away to take the vehicle off site for the day. A caravan is better for me for my type of holiday, and this Elddis Xplore 304 offers a lot for the size. However, the clever money always seems to buy an Eriba caravan because they hold their value very much like VW-based motorhomes. Personally, I'd go for one that perfectly suits my needs and try and keep it for many years. For weekend breaks you can probably get a Premier Inn deal far cheaper than the price of most UK campsites, and rather than take a caravan or motorhome you just need a car.
We bought a xplore 304 last year and we love it.The table in our 304 is on the side so no problems with the clothes in the wardrobe.
We’ve got the Elddis Explore 6 birth. Those buttons can be a pain. You do have to untwist them a little. If you do them too tight, it jams them. You can’t unlock them.
There’s no counter space. Our door is near the front. So we have that style cooker first then the sink. There is counter/cupboard space up at the back dinette between the dinette and the fixed bunks.
I too love the huge window at the front. And I love windows to the rear.
We got the caravan serviced in April . They have discovered it’s got rot below the window. The garage door fell off 2 weeks ago while we were on holiday!! It’s going on to be fixed. It’s only 4 years old!! It shouldn’t have rot in it?! I love it. I’m hoping to do a couple of modifications to it. Work out extra bench space, like an extra work surface. Or an extra shelf in the cupboard under the cooker and the plate cupboard. And I like that idea of the pole in the bath room.
How nice! This would be perfect for a couple and two older dachshunds.

I loved it but….. that bunk, you are so right, it should be an option. I’d rather have two cupboards.
Some sticky back plastic would work well in the join in the WC, but it is a bit of an annoyance for it to come like that from the factory!

It's a beautiful caravan and I'm over 64. I could sleep in either bed. And I do like having at least one extra bed in case I bring a friend.
But I'd probably never use the upper bunk.

As a single caravanner I was so close to buying one of these in 2011. There were two main things that put me off: (1) in that model-year they had not yet included a window in the rear dinette and (2) being 6'2" and biggish build, the washroom was a bit snug and hard to move around in.
This hesitation was enough to make me think, "that new Bailey 400/2 with the rear washroom can't POSSIBLY be the smallest caravan that Bailey do? There must be a smaller model". That's when I realised that the Bailey 400/2 was actually a much smaller 'van than I had ever imagined; so I went straight ahead and bought one. I still have a soft-spot for the little Elddis because it seems to hark back to caravans from the 70s and 80s; but 10 years on and with my Bailey still going strong, I have no regrets.
Yes, I remember those early ones not having a window. Glad your little Bailey is still going strong - I loved that little Discovery I borrowed!

These reviews are really eye opening at how cheaply its possible to get a fairly decent caravan for people looking at starting out. I've just been looking online at a 13 year old motorhome that's more than twice the cost of this caravan. Food for thought!
is tiny but very good use of space,with a few edits to the furiture you could slap a 50" tele in there and a few other things and be pretty good and it could probs be pulled by a ford focus

My 2003 Elddis has that hob, with four burners and yes it’s a bugger to clean down under the knobs.

Hi Andrew, I know your very used to towing a van, and I have towed my brick oven and small trailer short distances before, but being disabled I'm thinking I may have trouble when it comes to parking and unhitching, is there anything out there that could make it possible for me to do it on my own? The part that worries me above all is the stabilisers, normally meaning bent down or kneeling to hand crank down the stabilisers? Is there anything that can automatically level the van like on large motorhomes? My guess is they wouldn't need to be too powerful to do the job on a small caravan?
I like this van alot, I've been wanting a campervan for along time, but my opinion may be changing! I'm begining to think of the savings I can make, a good used car and a new caravan! Love the style in this van.
Any ideas to help out would be greatly appreciated.
You can get self leveling systems for caravans.. Google.. E and P hydraulic systems. I'd recommend a motor mover to move it around for you .. plus a decent 100mh or more battery with a solar panel to keep it topped up ... remember all this equipment needs to be taken into account when working out your payload 👍

Yes, E&P do a self levelling system. You can also get a motor mover to avoid doing the manhandling. BUT... both these systems can be heavy, so you will need a caravan with a generous payload. Good luck!
@@andrewjditton will I need to move it around? Can't I just reverse it in and lower down the support leveling jack's? Is it normal to have to move your van? I became a dab hand at reversing my trailer into very tight spots!
The whole idea is to keep the van small and easy to tow, I don't mind upgrading the axle, but I want to tow using an automatic VW caddy or similar typed vehicle, do you think that would be possible? How much weight would the caravan mover and jacks add?
Oh I really like this one! I totally agree that the bunk should really be an optional extra. Not everyone has kids or grand kids they want to take with them. I think I would take it down. Yes this is for the short list, I’m really not interested in the large vans and this looks like it is so well planned.
I personally would want the shower incorporated into one of those movable walls you get so much in motorhomes - but for the price, very nice 👍

It looks STUNNING, Andrew! The only thing that I have a feeling you’ll find annoying, apart from the cupboard handles; might be that 240v socket that looks too low to the ground to plug in, a MacBook Pro charger in at least. Obviously, I don’t know as we only see it from your 179cm height level, (we’re the same height). But it didn’t look there is much clearance for our Macbook chargers, unless you plug an EU adapter in to it and then plus the charger in?
Anyway, I’m so happy for you and I really want the same van with my electric car. So, allI can say is thanks again for this helpful, in-depth look into the xplore.
I’d make the bed the other way round, ie, the cushions facing down not up and depending on what side you sleep, to make it even for both people, put one thin cushion face down next to a wider one faced down and then finally the other thinner back cushion faced down. Then you have no breaks in the bits were your body pressure points are the heaviest.

Thank you! Actually, you'll see in Sunday's video that I asked Kimberly to rotate the socket 90 degrees to plug in the MacBook, which they did in about 2 seconds :) I used a Duvalay for a bed so the topper helps plug the gaps. I'm still working out the best solution for sleeping! All the best.

Bought a 304 this year… love it. We ditched the mattress and ladders and use the bunk to store the bedding. Love the simple light decor and the dinette is a winner. Easily accommodates two adults and a German shepherd. We upgraded from a 2 berth because the dog is a bed hog!!! The only thing I don’t like is the bathroom, agree about the shower… I won’t be using it… what’s wrong with a little dirt anyway?! Saw your duvalay vid… think I need one - 🐶

We use the space for our bedding as well
I was shocked to see the standard of finishing in the bathroom panels. This would lead to big problems later on with damp and rot. In fact it has put me off this caravan and probably all others.
I parked and lived in my old Elddis in a barn in France for two years while renovating, but had to live with four legged furry intruders who came in from underneath. Next for me will be a regular van with plywood panels and mod cons. DIY style. The best, and the cheapest.

great video about a nice trailer1 I agree with those buttons because my fingers are fatter than yours! the thing is, there is exactly the same style of locks, maybe a little bigger and they come out 2x as much! If you think you could sleep in that shorty bed comfortably I would be surprised. What is the deal with those chassis weight upgrades? that seems only to be a way for the dealer of making extra money, they do nothing to the chassis than file the higher weight!
Exactly, that's all they do. I guess it's just an admin fee.

Interesting review. It makes me think my 33 year-old Swift Danette compares very well: 14' long, 7' wide, 5-berth.
I agree that the drop down bunk would never be used if I purchased this caravan and would just be a waste of space and weight. As for the cover strip over the inner lining I have an Elddis 135 motorhome which has the same problem of this cover 'lifting' away from the wall covering, which, on a £43,000 motorhome after 3 or 4 years is to say the least 'disappointing', (any tips on fixing it back down would be appreciated) I have been told that covering with a piece of card and then ironing it back own works but not tried this.

A good review of a small, light caravan at the "more affordable" end of the market.
For me and my wife the bathroom is the vital part (prefer a dedicated shower cubicle though that can be in the same room as the loo and washbasin, rather than a shower curtain to protect the rest of the room) so this one would not be for us - BUT it is value for money and Elddis will sell a lot of these.

The sink and shelf takes away 50% of the shower space,I don't like the bunk socket-the cable will be trailing towards the table=could do better,but I like the one handed shelves.
Good review. You manage to do a level of criticism to caravans that other caravan "journalist" don't seem to manage.
We've got a 304 and there's 2 pesky annoying points you missed:
1. the socket at the dinette is stupidity positioned so you can't really plug anything in, really needs to be higher or rotated 90 degrees.
2. the panel wooden panel that the dinette socket is on is too high so you can't easily sit on the seat sideways to put your shoes on.
Otherwise a great caravan we got ours 2 months ago and love it!

Hard to say, but I do think that EVs are starting to feature in the decision process of 'early adopters', even if they don't plan to change their car just yet.

Great little caravan! I own a 2013 Xplore 302, which is even more compact, but I always call it the Tardis; it feels very spacious and luxurious. I love it. The area below the “hob knobs” is indeed a dirt trap. The lounge in the 302 is a bit longer (l-shaped), because the kitchen is in the back of the caravan. It’s a shame Elddis don’t make these smaller ones anymore, but the 304 is lovely as well (albeit is tad too heavy for my EV). The bunk seems very easily removable. Couple of screws and out it comes :)
I'm thinking with EVs slowly trickling on line that it would make a LOT of sense for Elddis to reintroduce the 302. Cheers Hans!
